Anticlimatic.

I elaborate. In manga serious attack is made against Edo Castle with siege engines, but in anime there is only 1 squad knocking the gates with wooden hammer. To do comparison with wargame terminology we are familiar with, Gate manga has big damn armies slugging it out that would make big damn scenario for Total War, Combat Mission, or Steel Panthers games, but anime adaptation is in scale of Close Combat.

6th episode of Gate anime gets it mostly right! JSDF helicopter task force rides on with helmets as seats while blasting Ride of the Valkyries and soldiers quote lines from the Apocalypse Now movie. Almost as good as in manga, but in color and animated.

What anime are you others watching?

I've got started with Marine Corps Yumi. TVtropes says manuscript was provided by former marine. But how accurately did mangaka get it done? Any marines in this forum who can tell?

One more anime season has come to close and new one begins. What did we watch of the last season? What are of interest of the new season?

Konosuba was relatively short with only 10 episodes and apparently much was left out. Still good parody about fantasy & RPG that made me laugh. Also got me interested about manga. Are translations out yet?

It has been said Mobile Suit GUNDAM Iron Blooded Orphans is ... something else than rest of the Gundam franchise. Child soldiers are given task to escort VIP from Mars to Earth, dominating force in the Solar system opposes it by any means necessary, and things escalate quickly. Bloody & gritty ride, don't watch with your youngest children. Another mecha show is Schwarzes Marken, part of the Muv-Luv franchise. Gonna watch it next. Or uncensored Argevollen when discs hit my mailbox.

Of the new anime I just watched first episode of Flying Witch. Exactly what it says in the tin. I've read through the manga and I totally enjoy slice-of-life of a flying witch & her friends. Other interesting ones are:
Bakuon!!, is about high school girls riding motorcycles
JOKER GAME is about japanese spies-in-training in 1937 (what is historical accuracy in here?)
Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto seems like total opposite to the most typical high school lead male characters. Typical = gets bullied, abused, and called pervert, usually by girls. Sakamoto is something else! In anime with high school male character that is almost original idea!

Seems, Anime und Manga, is more niche then war-games or at least more niche among war-gamers then war-game's.

Any idea why? War movies and stuff are talked often enough on this forum and manga & anime have their fair share of it. Also anime topics in BattleTech forum get new posts on most days. Then again, that forum seems to have more activity than this Matrix forum... Not bad for forum dedicated for one old fashioned tabletop war game, eh?

There is an article in today's (April 18) L. A. Times complaining that white actors are being cast in asian roles. Legitimate enough for Tilda Swinton playing the Ancient One (from Doctor Strange), but there is also static about the upcoming live-action version of Ghost In The Shell. Scarlett Johanssen is playing the lead, which is not surprising as she's the go-to actress for action heroines these days.

But let's think about it. Kusanagi Mokoto is full-cyborg: none of what an observer would see is living flesh. Her body can look like whatever a 3-D printer can turn out, so the fact that she currently lives in Japan (which she has not in times past) is not really relevant. IMHO, she should be played by someone who looks reasonably close to Masamune Shirow's character design, which is of course more caucasian than asian as nearly all manga/anime charaters are.

One of the more recent GitS anime got flak about Motoko looking different from the original character. Otherwise some anime adaptations can simplify character design - along with other things, like clothing - to make animation process (drawing and whatnot) faster and cheaper.

Too bad . . .

The Anime Network is currently running the series "When They Cry". It started off very promisingly, but in the fourth episode, the male protagonist goes paranoid and deliberately slams a door on the female lead's hand. This completely broke whatever sympathy I might have had.

Time to look for another show.

Among funniest anime of the season is And you thought there is never a girl online? In MMORPG guild leader of 3 male and 1 female characters propose offline meeting outside of the game. Male lead finds out:
All other guild members are girls
They all go to same high school
Guild leader is wealthy student council president
Tsundere girl calls male lead filthy otaku, but has herself rejected dating proposals from guys becouse it would cut off her online time (major case of pot calling kettle black!)
Player of the only female character is his wife-within-the-game, and she's hardcore yandere who thinks they're also married outside of the game
Then they find out male lead's first love within the game is their teacher
Hilarity ensues!

I've watched through 9 episodes that are out so far and I'm loving it! MMORPG they play is fictional, but I'm told it's basically Ragnarok Online. Looks interesting

Some pretty clever ideas -- obviously they've moved beyond giant robots. The JSDF vs medieval army sounds a bit too lopsided though.

I was also following the Infinite Stratos anime, where the protagonist discovers he is the only known male in the world with the ability to operate powered armor; all the other pilots are female.

I have read about it. It is said fellow students ( = girls) try get laid with him, and he has no idea what they are up to. Is he totally without any common sense?

In High School Fleet future of the navy trains on war ships of the Second World War. Series focus on japanese destroyer crewed by female cadets. Things go wrong and as a result ship & crew are declared renegades and open season for all armed ships. Some good naval action & warfare. Becouse of the female cast, series is informally called Girls und Destroyer.

Berserk anime returns with new season and Black Swordsman is kicking ass!

What would get attention of wargamers in here... How about war manga about historical wars?

Ad Astra - Scipio to Hannibal
This manga follows Hannibal and his adversary Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus. Hannibal and his army goes around Europe raping, pillaging, and burning, though most of the chapters focus on Italy. Hannibal's victories are described in good detail as are formations and strategies. This could be useful for ancient era wargames.

Vinland Saga
This manga is about vikings. Peaceful explorer and merchant vikings are side characters and focus is on the ones who conquered significant part of the Britain. War is Hell, and in this manga vikings have every intent of making it so: they rape, pillage, and burn. Manga has some historical narrative and characters, including Leif Ericson, Thorkell the Tall, Canute the Great, and others. Action goes little over the top which breaks suspension of disbelief: here Thorkell throws a spear length of a mile and he hits with it! I don't see this as useful for wargaming as Ad Astra. Still good and entertaining read where author has some idea (if not a good one) what he is doing.

Otome Sensou - Divichi Valka
Kingdom of Bohemia, 1420. Beginning of Hussite Wars. Infantry firearms enter the service. I haven't read much of this yet. Enough to know manga has rape, pillage, and burn, and I don't dare to link here the pages where it is done. Elsewhere on the Internet some history nut piped in manga has historical characters and historical accuracy. This is new manga so it doesn't have much of a read yet.

A girl from Czech is cohabiting with my brother. If this manga gets printed in czech language, it'll make a good gift to her. Or maybe not :P

Does anyone in here know any historical manga/anime about middle ages Japan and its civil wars?

Let's see...
quote:

His works such as The Walking Man, The Summit of the Gods and The Magic Mountain, stood apart in a genre sometimes seen as rooted in extreme violence and pornography.

The Summit of the Gods seems to be seinen genre.
quote:

In Japanese, the word "seinen" literally means "youth", but the term "seinen manga" is also used to describe the audience of comics like Weekly Manga Times and Weekly Manga Goraku which are aimed at men into their 50s.
...
Seinen manga can focus on action, politics, science fiction, fantasy, relationships, sports, or comedy and while they may contain sexual content (as well as other mature material), it remains predominantly more infrequent than in the seijin-muke manga.

What the Hell? Did writer of the news article got genres mixed up or what?

[edit]
On the second thought, Berserk is also in seinen genre, and it is pretty much extreme in violence & porn.

I just read something funny about Goblin Slayer:
quote:

If this was instead a manga about cute high school girls doing something, people would be having a ******* meltdown and screaming their heads off about "sexualization," "pedophilia," "pandering" and "moeshit," but when it comes to rape nobody has any issues.

Censored the f-bomb. And I seriously laughed at that

Great majority of fantasy works are ... how Frodo put it? Something about tales about great adventures, heroic deeds, and whatnot. The stuff like Hercules (Heracles?), Knights of the round table, and Lord of the Rings. Goblin Slayer is almost like fantasy equivalent of All Quiet on the Western Front, Apocalypse Now Redux, and Stalingrad, which leaves several (human) characters raped, dead, and broken in various ways.
