Status: offline 		Truman was no "little guy", Hector must have been a monster big guy! I remember when I was young and I'd be introduced to some old farmer it was always the same thing, "do you play basketball?" Yeah, yeah, yeah. So Truman ruined his shoes! In the battle he didn't have any shoes to ruin. In WWI Truman was in command of a battery of French 75s. He did a hell of a job with those. A really fitting guy to be handing out MOHs.

Status: offline 		An M1 rifle is what I knew as a "deer rifle". Thirty ought six. We call those "high powered rifles" now. The rifle isn't high powered, it's the cartridge it will accept that is high powered. The US Army had very nice rifles in both world wars. In WWI toward the end the Germans were trying to overcome the British and French with Stosstruppen. Those were essentially skirmishers or jaegers who were intended to be used offensively. At the end they were faced with, to a significant extent, American farmers who were really good with their "deer-rifles" and could pick someone off at over 300 yards, well over 300 yards without a scope. Europeans were just not used to that. It harkened back to the Battle of Saratoga where British regulars with smooth bore muskets were put up against American farmers with their own personal weapons, rifled muskets with which they were very adept.

Status: offline 		Does everyone know that the US Marines, "every man a rifleman" in WWI were involved in France? Roughly half of US forces were Marines and those Marine divisions were the size of European Corps.

I presume everyone remembers that Belleau Wood was a battle before it became an LHA. One of my friends in the navy served on it. It was an LHA before it became the 'focus' of a RIMPAC exercise.

The press got on Truman's case just because he chewed on a Big Mac and enjoyed it. The press must have been watching out for the Prez modelling unhealthy eating habits.

Before the LHA, Belleau Wood was a CVL or CVE. I think it got to witness the Baker test at Bikini - close up.

For those who posit a good business man would make a good President, I say maybe. A good businessman might make a good President. Andrew Johnson was a good businessman, he had a successful tailoring business. George H.W. Bush was an excellent businessman and made a killing in the oil business. His son, W., made out alright although his business went down the pooper. But for the most part our US Presidents were farmers, lawyers or military officers, and not necessarily good at those jobs.

And, by the way, it's mediochre, which is somewhere between yellow and brown.

Status: offline 		In hindsight Truman was a horrible business man but proved to be a very capable president. He suffered at the hands of conservative republicans and the powerful China lobby which tainted him as soft on communism and "losing China"-as if China was actually ours to lose. Does not matter who the president was they were going to take punishment for China. I highly recommend the excellent biography of him written by David McCullough. but you got to admit. Listening to that vet was a total hoot.

I'm sure that disagreement with a gorn is punishable by death but . . . the USMC only had max strength of 70k or so in WW1 (this includes those serving on USN ships and those not deployed overseas). The USArmy was almost 2m (overseas) by the end of WW1. The Marines suffered about 3k dead, the USArmy about 100k dead.

There were no USMC divisions. The 4th Marine brigade was one of the two brigades in the 2nd ID. USArmy divisions were 'square' divisions back then. There was a 5th Marine brigade but I don't remember if it was independent or part of a USArmy ID. I don't think that it saw much fighting.

Status: offline 		A couple of centuries ago I played a WWI board game that had Marine divisions of about 28k men each. Don't know where that came from. The US Army divs had about 24k men.

The Marines got excellent press in WW I. The story of their exploits were much larger than their actual contribution. That's a major reason the Marines didn't serve in any combat role in Europe or Africa in WW II. Marshall wouldn't allow it.
