And this one is even more perplexing. How do I get to the final number of -6?

Until I figure out what I am not understanding, I have to defer building out SU's the way I stated. I push SU's into those aremies that had none out of the combat zone.

AND I continue to research...

Don't count any SUs against the command limit. The only regiments that do are the on-map NKVD units.

On-map costs vs command cap
Bde=1
Div=2
Corps=4

Thanks sir,

So does that mean that in April 43 Russian army command limit will go up to 21 from 18?

No they are staying at 18 forever after spring 1942. (Except shock army at 21 and tank army at 15).

But your front limit move up a bit.

Also important to note is guards armies go to cap of 21. That allows you to get an extra corps in that army to potentially reduce penalty for units from other armies that participate in the same battle.

Gents - very helpful. I relied too much on an outdated manual.

Now to correct these errors...

Blizzard in 2 turns.

Germany continues along same themes
1. Axis makes attempt to attack in and around Tula. Russia counterattacks and takes back more hexes than it lost in the German turn. Germany does not have the necessary forces in this theater to continue offensive operations
2. Axis continues to push to clear the west side of the Don (east of Boguchar). Three hexes were taken. Russia launches attritional attacks not intended to win hex
3. Axis panzer ball continues to move east on a direct line to Stalingrad. 5 hexes were taken. Russian counterattacks retake 4 hexes in heavy fighting. Note Russian forces did not have any corps or armor
4. Axis main attack is a push 50 miles east of Rostov pushing SE. German forces took 4 hexes, and Russian forces took back 2 hexes in heavy attritional fighting.
5. Crimea is all quiet as is all territory north of tula
6. Russian air forces have found the right mix of missions. 77 lost last turn for 220 Soviet. Credit half of the kills to AA, which I built recently.

So, as I move on in this second attempt to play WITE, more of my NOOB Russian mistakes have been revealed. Each has to be corrected.

1. I misinterpreted the number of command points Russian armies get. The mistake is a cumulative 181 command points overages, requiring me to build another ten-ish armies, reoarganize, and build more support units. DRADT!
2. combat continues to shock units from their command boundaries. I tend to be poor in this regard, as any can see. I don't seem to have the discipline to keep the troops together by army. (in places I do)
3. I did not build enough infantry guard corps, and I don't have immediate AP's to make them given my other mistakes
4. I have not pulled my strongest units to build guards armies / centralize strength

I am sure there are other major errors, but I haven't uncovered them yet.

I have long played by the rule that I didn't want my truck ratio to go below '1'. Below is a tracking history of trucks, keeping in mind I have built many support units.

I did not build any units this turn. I am holding AP's, potentially until 1943 when trucks become more available.

the question is should I be worried? I have read the rules about calculating shortage effects, but I am worried about building too large of a deficit now,

IS THIS GOOD OR BAD? I don't know.

My esteemed opponent commented the same thing.

Perhaps all the support units I put in are starting to take effect, but I am betting the partisan activities are probably more to blame

I do plan to commit my reserves but not until January if at all possible.

Germany successfully launches surprise attack with 2nd panzer army under Guridian on Moscow.

I didn't see it coming. That is really bone-headed on my part and excellent subterfuge on my esteemed opponents part. How did I not see this coming?

The German attack barely doesn't break out.

-----------------------

ASIDE. I long wondered why the enemy didn't go for Moscow at the start of last season and then switch south. Now with only one panzer army after Moscow
I am strategically comforted about Stalingrad and Caucuses. The enemy will get one more good turn of attacking before reserves are to Moscow in strength.
So ironically and despite my blunder, I feel fortunate that the enemy didn't throw that panzer army into the Caucuses campaign.

--------------------------------

Full turn update after I finish my turn.

As a belated update to turn 76. 1 turn to blizzard

1. Germany pulls off a tactical surprise and launches an attack on Moscow with a panzer army. I was somewhat lax in my searching in that area, not searching that particular area the turn before the assault. I also knew there was a missing panzer ball, but I didn't think in a thousand years the enemy would throw down at Moscow again. I was wrong!
2. German panzer army continues its dispersed linear assault northeast towards Tula. Its hard to say if any real progress is being made. At best a few hexes. But it is tying down more forces than I would normally have in the area.
3. Germany continues an infantry only assault along the western edge of the Don (east of Boguchar). 1 or 2 hexes falling per turn
4. German panzer ball (understrength army) continues to push due east towards Stalingrad, trying to force the narrow gap between the Chir and Tsymia rivers at 133.90
5. Largest German panzer and infantry concentration continuing to slowly expand the foothold across the Don east of Rostov. 10 hexes are controlled and the penetration is as deep as 30 miles

I spent days studying the map prior to doing my turn.

I continue to be perplexed at German strategy. Using the principle of concentration of forces, I struggle to understand how committing 2/5ths of his attacking forces to areas that are well outside generally accepted critical war objectives. Perhaps he has given up the prospect of clearing the Caucuses?

The air war has receded somewhat, because I have shifted how I am tackling the Luftwaffe.

We play games shifting priorities back and forth hoping for gains. While I am still doing that, it is important to note that all the AA SU's I built recently are starting to have material effect.

I plan to add more AA when I can afford the trucks in 43.

Blizzard - 5 turns until 1943

1. German strength finally has its way on the lower Don, nearly doubling the size of the bridgehead across the river. The enemy pushed west and effectively isolated Rostov. Russian forces were forced to withdrawal from all points west of the lower Don.
2. German forces make slow progress near Moscow in the face of building resistance.
3. Russian and German forces trade hexes around Tula in a scrum style fight
4. Russia withdraws out of Crimea
5. I sent 100 AP's to reorganize my poorly organized MLR, but I still don't get all armies down to 18 command point limit. I still have to build more armies

4 turns to 1943. Cant wait for the trucks and morale boost

Germany continues its major themes.
1. Rostov falls (Russia abandons it). Germany expands the bridgehead south and west. Russia counterattacks from the south. Weak point in Russian line still to the west. Russia still fighting to hold the two rail lines. Commits 2 strategic reserve armies to the fight.
2. Russia abandons Volga defenses and pushes 4 reserve armies into points along the MLR
3. German minor thrust on Stalingrad making about 1 hex her turn. Russia throws a reserve army against the panzer ball.
4. Germans end assaults along the Don east of Boguchar
5. German panzer attack near Tula gains 1 hex in linear attacks. Russians do not conduct major counterattack operations because their MLR is level 2+ fort.
6. Moscow offensive becomes linear north and south of the city. 6 hexes north of the cirty taken and 1 south. Germans make no eastward progress, because of Russian armored counterattacks. Moskova - Volga canal holding at this point. Germany also has limited air presence over this attack

Here is the view of the battle.

Moscow will be a slugfest, but I hope to hold it. In any event enemy progress will not be dramatic.

At Rostov, enemy will make progress to the southwest out of Rostov. I hope to stop eastward progress with my counterattack.

3 turns until 1943

Man do I need the trucks boost. The morale boost wont be a bad thing either.

1. Germany pushes south and west from Rostov slowly
2. Panzer ball still moving slowly towards Stalingrad
3. Germany pulls back from attacking towards Tula
4. Strong German units begin an assault on Moscow proper
5. German air force is almost non-existent
6. Russians fully commit three armies to stem tide around Rostov. Western exit from Rostov is the weak point.

I expect to lose the city and have not committed enough troops to stop the enemy dead.

But for now it holds.
