I apologize in advance, but I just purchased the game a few days ago and have no idea what to do. Any recommendations where to look for a good step by step guide? I started scenario 1 as Allies against the AI. I downloaded a few pages from the beginner post on here, but I honestly don't even know where to begin haha.

Thanks!

start playing as allys without no idea what to do, as allys just protect PH and send your carriers to NOUMEA and start thinking to plenty supplys and fuel as you may need it in PH for sure and NOUMEA then think of take kawaljen island as son as posible and stop there, for this plan you will take 2 years more or less so dont look for a battle carriers until you have the CV hornet and you have change yours planes at Cvs into better ones...save your carriers if you see the possibilyty staking SINGAPORE go ahead (it means that you can send Indian troops to singapoore.

GO AHEAD.

PAY ATTENTION

As son as you get the Hornet you have 5 big carriers and i think one cve (16 units)..i did this at WITP..once i send troops fuel and supplys to Noumea i went to disembark at salomon islands..with my 5 carriers suddenly two KidoButais japan (ten carriers) and i sunk all of them...but get the best fighters into the carriers..you attak always first with your carriers as allys... but put the weather ON in the settings.

Zecke is talking about the Grand Campaign which is the whole Pacific war. I found it much easier to start with small scenarios like the Coral Sea or the 1000 Mile War (Aleutians.) Prior to that, I had been reading a lot of AARs so I was familiar with some of the concepts of strategy and tactics and how to use the game buttons to set what you want.

Energisteron has a current AAR on the Coral Sea scenario with lots of well-illustrated maps and comments. He has played twice as the Allies, being soundly defeated the first time but having learned his lesson, he won handily on the second try. Now he is planning to play as the Japanese.

If you are looking for step-by-step info on how to use the various game controls, there are some links to video guides in the post about FAQ for newbies. Otherwise, play with the interface and refer to the manual when you are unsure.

Read the manual, even if you don't understand what it says yet. A first read will provide later "I saw that somewhere" moments.

Play the Coral Sea and 1000 Mile scenarios from the Allied side. Don't restart--just play them through. If you want, try the Guad scenario too, but it's longer and to an extent teaches bad grand campaign habits IMO.

Then start a Scenario 1 GC as the Allies against the AI. Again, don't restart. Just live with mistakes and see what happens.

After that, if you're interested in Japan, try them. The task force, pilot training, etc. mechanics are similar.

But read the manual now.

This game is a marathon. Take baby steps. The Moose offers excellent ideas.

Start as Allies. They have less micro managing. Start small, don't get disappointed if the game 'goes south' (it will), be happy you got a game that you will not master & toss in a matter of weeks. Go easy, don't grow frustrated, and ask questions on these forums. Folks here are some of the best I have seen on the internet, and we like to help. The game, and these forums, have been around for many years, which should be an indicator of how much fun this game can be once learned (learned, never mastered ) Try to be specific on questions, as this is a pretty complex game until you get the hang of it.

Expect learning something new about how the game works every other day you play it. One of the joys of WITP AE, you cannot know it all and you have to deal with it

Folks on this forum are great!

I started with the coral sea scenario and am watching a tutorial on Youtube (see below). At the 3:56 mark, he changes the patrol level. On mine, however, it shows the patrol level but doesnt give me the same options. Is there an option I have turned off?

First, make sure you have the current official game update.
You can get that from the product page under downloads.

Second, If you have a destination set for a task force you need to clear it in order to set the patrol zone.
Click on set destination and then hit the escape key to clear it.

Are you talking about ships or aircraft?
Patrol aircraft or Fighters?
Patrol level as in % of aircraft in the squadron assigned, or Patrol Arcs or Patrol Range?

It is necessary to be very specific or include a screenshot of what you are looking at so we understand the situation correctly.

If you are unsure how to post a screenshot let us know and we can give you a step-by-step list.

Good call. It appears I wasn't updated because now everything appears the way it should.

THank you. I'll keep you all updated on my first scenario against the evil Empire!

I don't think he can post a screenshot with 3 posts.

Quite right - I overlooked the post count. IIRC the right to post pictures and links comes after ten posts.

A little more on this - Trugrit's advice applies if your ship is already in home port.
You can set a patrol while already at sea too - just understand that the Patrol needs to have a replenishment port since the game engine will automatically send a patrol back to base to replenish ammo or fuel and then return it to the patrol it had before.
So, when at sea already, set your TF destination to its home base (you might want to change which base is home first). Then go to the routing sub-menu and set your patrol hexes.
