Regarding SS: I let the initial few turns play out then recall all of my badly Captained subs and REPLACE the leaders. Your attacks/hits will go up FAST!

+1

I don't bring them all back at once, but I do start a process that cycles them all back, review the captains, replace Glens, add spare pilot, update their patrol zone, ....

First, thanks for the tip on the Subs. Started to look at that now. I don't normally do this for the Allied side, but as the EMpire, well, now that I've started checking, as per the tips, and yeah... not the greatest naval guys around from Turn 1. Will start the commander rotations as soon as I can.

Ok, Turn 5 completed, and date is now Dec 17th

Good turn for my side even though I made two boneheaded mistakes. Well, mostly, not totally boneheaded, but if it wasn't 1 am in the morning when I finished my move, I might have noticed, but yeah, ok... still boneheaded moves.

Part of my CV group took a hit as I was too close to Singapore when I didn't plan on it. I thought I had calculated the right distance to hit fleeing ships, but didn't check my settings well enough. Second one is that I forgot that my main Mersing Amph TF was at least 1 full day behind, so only the Eng and ART showed up.... Ah well, it's a long war, so it's still ok.

So on this turn, I successfully invaded Alor Star, Legaspi, Tuguegarao, Surigao, Burias, Kweiteh, but my best one was getting Hong Kong this early. That's a relief.

From an Amph side, started on Mersing, Kuching and Aitape (again). So far, happy with my play. Getting good traction on the Amph invasions, and i'm keeping well ahead of my timetable. Losing too many fighters, but that's ok, the whole premise is learning the "other" side.

All in all, having a blast.

Pace of Operations: Now you hit a 'learning curve.' How to maintain a brisk pace of operations?? Getting the right ships, mostly transports, to the right bases to pick up troops and some supplies (easy to take too much with ya). I hope you converted or are converting xAKs to xAK -t.

Palembang: How soon do you plan to invade? With what? Don't give Allies time to get any of those three Indian Brigades at sea time to unload at Oosthaven and rail into that base.

Ansyu PBs - Besides being 14 knot escorts, they work well in Fast Transport TFs. Each carries 1000 supplies. I use them a lot to get supplies to forward bases as the war goes on rather than risk xAKs.

Turn 6 completed, and date is now Dec 19th

Things went as expected on this turn. Ok, about game turns. While it is true that 2-day turns do make the game faster, I actually get aggravated because I can't get the right settings in between turns. As an example, at Mersing, I just wanted 1 day of bombardment and then one day of Deliberate attack, but that is not possible. Causes delays that could be avoided.

Oh well, nothing I can do but understand how to live within the limitation.

Successfully invaded Balabac, Lingayen, Lucena, Cotabato, Kuching and Aitape (finally).

From an Amph side, started on Mersing, Kudat, Babo, Manokwari and Lunga.

and Yes, I do have to get on Palembang soon. It's coming. It's in the plans once I get Sinkawang which should be very shortly.

Thanks for all the tips everyone...

HQs

If you have read many of my posting over the years, I get on players that are on the offense to team up a Command HQ with an Army or Corp HQ to get the big bonus if both pass a die roll. 90% adjusted Assault Value (AV) from the Command HQ!! One thing that I easily convinced John 3rd to do with these mods many years ago was to increase the number of unrestricted Command HQs. So the easiest pairing is Southern Army Command HQ with 25th Army for Singapore. Have you done so? Are they both in Malaya yet and prepping for Singapore? Next, is the NE Fleet Command HQ that I think starts up at Ominato. I have it start prepping for Manila, but could be Clark or Bataan. Plan on shipping it over there. There are a few more Command HQs like Combined Fleet to find and pair up.

Air HQs have been moved around instead of too many starting at Takao. Can you list where yours are at or being moved to? Since the Allied navy is a little more potent its a good idea to have Ms Nell and Ms Betty cover your advance.

American DBs: There are three groups of A-24 Banshee at Darwin at start and I got John to move the old, but still Nasty Vindicator group from Eastern USA to somewhere in Pacific. So, there are two of them now (the other was at Pago Pago). So, five possible air groups operating out of a few scattered size 2 AFs raining 500 or 1000 lb bombs on your helpless transports. Just a friendly word of caution here, especially with two day turns.

Hi NY59,

Yes, I have both Southern Army and 25th in Malaya already, and yes, both have been prepped for Singapore since the opening moves. Northeast is still in Ominato though. Was planning to send to Parashumiro for some Aleutian activity. So you are recommending to send to PI instead?

For Air HQs, I have 21st in Babeldoag, 22nd in Saigon, 23rd in Truk, 24th in Roi-Namur. 3rd Air is in Kompong but now that i've taken Alor Star, will move on the next turn. 5th is still in Takao, and was just about to start moving it to PI now that i've taken San Fernando and Lingayen.

Turn 7 completed, and date is now Dec 21th

One thing that I don't like about 2 day turns is that LCUs go from deliberate to bombardment on second turns when you don't want them to. Very aggravating. I would of had Mersing last turn if it hadn't switched to bmb.

Successfully invaded Bayonbong, Masbate, Kudat, Babo, Manokwari and Pucheng

Working on Mersing, Puerto Princesa, Manado, Ternate and Lunga. Also have troops at Georgetown, and should be able to hit Iba on next turn.

I'm prepping for Palembang as soon as I get Singkawang next turn (hopefully). Will have 4th mixed, and 4th div ready for Palembang in the next couple of days. Already have CVEs, BBs, DMS, and a few other things ready to go once all assembled.

Getting there.

IF you don't pair up a Command HQ with another lower HQ, you miss out on the 'potential' of that huge AV bonus. So, sending NE Command to Aleutians means it acts just like am Army/Corps HQ, only 10% bonus. You have 14th, 15th, and 16th Army HQs to use. The 14th is for Luzon, the 15th is for Burma, but I would use the 16th for Batavia, Java with a Command HQ. It is easy to land somewhere on Java and just march everywhere overland. That takes time you don't have unless your expansion goals are going to be very basis (NO India, western Australia, deep SoPac, most of Aleutians).

As soon as 3rd is at Alor Star, move 22nd from Saigon to Singkawang. 21st at Babeldoab should go to Manado. Check Japan to see if you have any others that you can move out.

So, it is switching based upon the outcome of the 1st day attack. Your final odds were below 1:1 which will move your units out of attack mission.

2 Day turns require that you, as the attacker, increase your attack strengths across the board to ensure your result doesn't happen. This is one of the many subtle effects of 2day(or higher) turns that slows down the tempo of the game to more historical rates ...

Like Pax said and also if you were at 1:1 odds but had a bad attack with losses and lots of disruption, day two would have had another DA with poorly prepared troops and likely a nasty outcome. Those can really hurt....

Took all the advice from above and will be putting them to good use in the next few turns. Thanks for that. Still learning on stuff even though i've played this game for years... gotta luv it.

Anyway, turn 8 completed, and date is now Dec 23rd

Kitakami will be happy today. He put a nice torp into one of the CVEs at Rabaul. Had tons of protection, but it still hit, and I had an un-escorted set of bombers hitting Mersing that basically got wiped out. Will be looking at what I forgot to do on the turn. I'm sure either forgot to set the escort, or forgot to set the target. Annoying but easy to forget with so many things going on (even though I keep notes)

Successfully invaded Georgetown, Puerto Princesa, Dadjangas, Tavoy and Ternate.

Working on Mersing, Manado, Lunga, Temuloh and Singkawang. 33rd going to Moulmein, and the 4ths will go to to help on Singkawang and Palembang once finished at Mersing.

Have my CVs in several areas, but no contact with his big ships. He is definitely staying low right now. Don't blame him. I'd do the same. Anyway, gotta go work on the turn.

Well, second best turn so far in view of goals achieved.

The CVE that took a hit last turn survived, and is escaping.

Successfully invaded Langkawi, Mersing (yeah), Temuloh, Butuan, Mergui, Singkawang (good), Sandakan, Manado (yeah), Vanimo, Lunga, and the ever important Rabaul. Heck of a good turn.

Now that this has been achieved, next few turns is to put a strangle hold on Iba, Singapore, and of course get going on Palembang.

Working on redistributed the Command HQs as per recommendations, as well as some of the Air HQs.

The date is Dec 27th 1941

Successfully invaded Taiping, Catbalogan, Cabanatuan, Camiguin, Beaufort, Boela, and Namatanai. Ok.. outside of Taiping, all small, but still.

Amph action started on Lokobato and Ambon.

Something cool that doesn't happen often is that I had one my sub captain launch four torpedoes at a Kitakami sub. Ok, so I missed on all four torpedoes but it is a small boat to hit in that big watery ocean :)

But still, that was really cool.

The date is Dec 29th 1941

Man o'man it moves fast in 2 day turns.

Ok, Some small successes. Successfully invaded Mauban, Polillo, Sidate, and Lolobato. Some bigger successes. Invaded Kluong and Johore Bahru. Pretty much have Singapore surrounded now.
Also invaded Ambon.

That was a good win at Ambon, but I lost 3 APs at Ambon because I didn't properly protect my Amph task force. Had a BB with me, but moved it too early on this turn, and my APs paid the price. Never assume anything, and don't leave your transports without good protection. Good lesson learned. Got cocky there.

Amph action started on Taytay, Tawau, and Tulagi. Singkawang should be ready to allow Palembang on my next turn (i hope).

Oddly enough, I had another Sub-Sub attack, and once again, my captain missed. ugh..

CAs or BBs are best if placed within the Amphib TF. Remember that for Tarakan and Balikpapan.

The date is Dec 31th 1941. Last turn before 1942. YAHOO!!!

Ok.. let's get through the small stuff. Invaded Lubang, Taytay, Sibuyan, Tawau and Tulagi. All small stuff.

Amph action started on Singapore, Manila, Iba, Palembang, Morotai, Hollandia, Buin and Gasmata.

Things are going well for Palembang. Rest of the troops should land next turn and should be able to take it.. Hopefully. Iba was no good as I didn't realize that one of my LCU units was fatigue. Need to slow this one down. Singapore ARM recon attacked when I was didn't think it would (didn't give it any orders by DEFEND). For some reason, went into Shock mode, and got destroyed. ARRRGGHHH. Manila is underpowered but i'm only doing bombardment until I get more units there.

Big news is I found and successfully engaged Force Z at Batavia. Had a CV group in the area, and attacked. Bad news is that I had only a few sorties left, and even less torpedoes. ARRGGHH talk about timing.

However, did hit all three big ships (PoW, Repulse and Renown), but didn't have enough torps to finish the job. Most bombs bounced off. Hopefully, I did enough damage that I can bring up another CV group in time to finish the job. So little time to adjust in 2 day turns. once more ... ARRGGHHH..

:)... this was a cool turn. Did a few mistakes, had first big ship battle. Did some damage. All in all, I lost too many fighters and bombers (again), but I am learning. It's been a blast so far. Really liking the Japanese side. Didn't think I would, but actually really like it.

Have no idea how Kitakami is actually liking or doing from his point of view. You guys can read his AAR so you have a better idea, but he is one cool opponent. Luv this game of ours...

It's a Saturday and think to yourself that if you time things well, you can flip three turns today. However, in your haste, you forget the little things like forming TFs to get those damn AKEs away from Japan. You may overlook things like getting some minesweepers down to Truk as you find out there are none there for Japan as you find mines the hard way at Rabaul.

I can laugh at myself because my first time playing Japan, I was playing FatR and it took to April/May to capture Singapore and Palembang. The Oil Centers were almost completely trashed. Needless to say, I surrendered in Summer of '42.

My best at capturing Singapore was 31 Dec 41. However, all my shipping and MSW were still at Saigon and CRB. I had to get the MSW there and load up the extra supplies and fuel to transfer to Singapore.

The date is now January 2nd 1942. We have made it past our first month. YAHOO!!!

To start, the small invasions: Babuyan, Serasan, Morotai, Buin and Hollandia.
Now, the bigger invasions: Malacca, Batangas, Malaybalay, Iba and Gasmata.

Happy to get Malacca and Iba. Allows me to really start focusing troops now in PI and Malaya.

Big news is that I started my invasion of Palembang. Thought I remembered everything. CA/CL cover, Minesweeping, etc. etc. and the one thing that should have been at the top of my list, is the one thing I forgot. Too funny. I have hundreds of notes, and what do I forgot, yep.. you guessed it, AIR COVER!!!!!!

My amph task force took a beating, as well as my troops. what a miss. Several ships paid the price for my stupidity. However, I did land the 4th div in good numbers, so Palembang is about to get a beating....and I will fix my air cover this turn.

I sent Kitakami my intelligence report (main page) just so that he can see impacts of Fog of War on the numbers we are seeing. Waiting for his feedback on how different his numbers are.

Good fun, good learning experience, learning tons, and i'm really enjoying the Japanese side. I have played Allies since WITP (original) first came out, and took me years to figure out this japanese economy side of things, but now that i'm starting to get it, its really fun.

I'm enjoying this as much as i can as I also realize that sooner or later, and probably sooner, the Allies will come back, and then it's Kitakami's turn to have his fun....

Hi NY69Giants

I'll put my charts below on airframes, but did want to ask. I should know this, but ummm,, yeah.. I don't :)... Now that I have the Rufe actually producing in Jan 1942, do I still need my Pete producing. Are there Airgroups that need to keep having Petes?

Ok.. here is what i'm building right now:

FP - I would be down to Glen until you run out of engine or get 100 in pool; Jakes at 30 or 45 per month, and about 45 or 60 Rufe per month. Nothing else.

Nell Recon - keep producing them!! I allowed the factory to upgrade, but have just added it back (Apr 43).

Nell vs Betty - I switched over to just Nell. The 2nd gen which comes out in a few months is my primary IJN LB bomber.

Sally vs Helen - I went with Sally until 2nd gen Helen came out. I use the 1st gen Helen for my ASW groups. It does get MAD device later in war.

Thalia - convert

See my thread here for airframes to produce or not. Many better economics ministers have sound advice.

Ok... seem to be having a supply problem on some bases on the mainland, and i'm sure i've forgotten something.

I have a few bases which already are lacking supplies. I have good amount of oil, moving tons of resources onto the mainland, and yet, not enough supplies.

Is supply generated differently in this version of the mod as compared to DBB? I don't have this problem with DBB or B-MOD so just wondering, was I suppose to expand LI/HI in this version of the mod? or is there a Supply generation difference that I might not have realized, and I need to do something different for BTSL?

I have set the "supply required" up for these bases, but still having this issue. Even started to set some of these bases as "supply stockpile" for a few turns to help, but still odd. I've had good supply (i thought) since early on, but it's only becoming a problem in the last few turns.

I'm adding a screenshot of my situation on the next post. Not quite getting what's wrong here.

Thanks...

As you can see. I'm actually better on supplies that I was before and yet, problem is getting worse.

Supplies: Its easy to eat them up quickly. One way is to try to expand too many bases. I would hit the "B" button to bring up all your bases and turn OFF all expansion efforts everywhere for a few turns. Now that I'm in May '43, I just have a few bases expanding (AF, port, and/or forts) and aiframes. The other thing is repairing economic assets. You have the oil and refinery center at Anshan, the 4 engine and 4 airframe at Harbin. So, you could be eating up 10k daily in Manchuria. Add in any offensive operations in China and you could be running low.

Solutions: Slow down repairs and/or I have a small CS convoy from Shanghai to Nagasaki that brings Resources from China and returns with Supplies. You can do the same from Fusan. These two CS convoys are about 15k in cargo capacity. It depends on how much supplies you are generating in Japan and what that surplus is. A tough balancing act.

Hit the "B" button to pull up all your bases. Next, sort by "Supply" to find out which bases may be hording supplies that you have overlooked.

Remember when you capture a base, the HI is cut in half. Another thing that happened to me was when I captured empty bases in India, the AI DESTROYED all the HI (A bug that hasn't been fixed yet). So, I missed out on what I had hoped to gain there.

HI - I expand Georgetown to about 20 and Singapore to 80. Hong Kong goes to about 75 or 80 for me. You may have to do some in Home Islands. Many players don't do any HI expansion, but to each their own.
