Seems to be another game of Axis & Allies going on. This is for the one I am in...as Japan.

Japan continues it's punishment of the Chinese. They have refused to pay the reparations they agreed to when the Boxer War was ended. They have also refused to punish those that killed and tortured innocent civilians (including many western pastors and businessmen) during that War. They have in fact promoted those very guilty parties.

We captured an airfield and moved north across the river from Shanghai.

A bit of Déjà vu due to technical difficulties:

Germany: January 1938

Despite an astounding drop in unemployment from 6 million to 1 million in six years, Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist party continues to bolster the Germany economy with infrastructure expansion. January also saw a major annexation of Berlin for industrial growth. Lost in the continued economic success was the dismissal of Field Marshal Werner von Blomberg due to scandal.

Italy: January 1938

Not to be outdone, Benito Mussolini sought to keep pace with Germany's success by investing in industrial growth, albeit with lesser results. Also, El Duce unexpectedly instituted new military doctrines throughout his armed forces, and despite some setbacks and hesitancy from Italian Generals, the reorganization entered the implementation phase with some success.

Japan continues to improve it's economy and builds another annex in Nagasaki. The war with China seems to be in a stalemate although the Chinese retreated from the northern airfield we just captured. This month we just exchanged artillery shots with the Chinese. The Chinese sent lots of troops to the sea coast.

Germany Feb. 1938

Berlin was abuzz with another month of rapid industrial expansion and annexation for infrastructure growth. The advent of the Volkwagon Type 1 "People's Car" is a revolutionary concept, and all the more so given Germany's limitations of oil. A speech for the Fuehrer , in which he named the car Kraft-durch-Freude-Wagen ("Strength Through Joy Car"), was hailed by National Socialist as a key moment in the movement's history. Also, restructuring of the military under new doctrine continued at a blistering pass, leaving one to wonder what is the need for such an overhaul given their limited military?

Italy Feb. 1938

The military's restructure suffered set backs as El Duce changed his mind on certain particulars of his new doctrine and was too busy overseeing Rome's production overhauls and his many political obligations. The breaking ground of a dozen new factories as well as a prolonged visit with Austria and Spain's ambassador's hallmarked an amazing month for Italy, according to El Duce.

More industrial improvements and another annex to Nagasaki...Nagasaki cannot be improved any further so Hiroshima is next.

Some advances in the North of China but elsewhere the Chinese seem to be massing large number of CONSCRIPTS into service. These are not volunteers but citizens forced to take up arms with inadequate training for what they are about to face. We are getting so many volunteers that we cannot train them fast enough and are forced to turn some of them away until a later time. Some of these volunteers have committed war crimes which is against our disciplinary rules so we have adjusted our training to include training on behavior disciplines. Our front-line units are being reminded of behavior rules.

Germany March 1938

International inspectors are questioning the designations on German divisions to be misleading at best, and many leaders suspect the Treaty of Versailles is being broken wholesale. Yet despite the outcry, famous American car maker Henry Ford is quoted saying in the Times that "Berlin's growth makes it the jewel of the world in both
architecture and innovation."

Italy March 1938

El Duce had two meetings with Spanish dictator Franco, which kept him out of his country for extended periods in March. Surprisingly, production and constructions schedules exceeded expectations and Rome continued it's expansion.

China is trying to fight a war and modernize at the same time. Set backs in the north keep happening but then Chiang Kia Shek never trusted Mao anyway and suspects he is losing on purpose.

23rd of April 1938

The Soviet economy advances in leaps and bounds as the fervour of the Soviet peoples channelled by our great father Joseph Stalin continues to grow. Pilots for the Red Army in training many more are needed to pilot the planes rolling of the production lines.

Germany April-May 1938

Adolf Hitler made an unexpected trip to Finland in light of Mannerheim's recent policies reflecting the gross overtures of France. Mannerheim and Hitler spent a great deal of time in conversation with some success and leeway given to Hitler's demands. Also, Germany's industrial progress expanded into Munich and an entire sector on the outskirts of Berlin unveiled a state of the art tractor factory that appears to be unlike any other in Europe.

Italy April-May 1938

El Duce spent most of March and April having intense meetings with German and Austrian officials and brokered a surprising pact between Austria and Italy. Hailed as a stroke of brilliance by El Duce, the influx of trade and political capital was immediately felt in Italy, and even El Duce's staunchest critics were silent.

China had a fleeting moment of victory as massed artillery cut up advancing Japanese troops the follow on air raid just added icing to the cake. And again Communist forces were forced to retreat. The alliance doesn't seem to strong with constant set backs on the communist front.

Guys...I'm fine and I don't live in Nevada.
I live in Cornville Arizona...more than a hundred miles from Las Vegas Nevada (Sin City). Cornville is south west of Sedona and Flagstaff.

And the reason I have not been using my email system is computer related problems with my ISP...their cable was cut by construction crew and they had to patch it. And other uploading problems--still not resolved. Been thinking of changing ISP but have VERY FEW options out here in country area (very rural--coyotes outnumber humans).

Germany June-July 1938

A new Triple Alliance has been formed between Spain's Franco, Germany's Hitler, and Italy' Mussolini. News of this surprising military pact has sent ripples of fear of a second Great War throughout Europe. Add in Austria's capitulation of power to the Fuehrer, and the political maneuvering of Germany and Italy has been nothing short of exceptional. But Hitler has not found victory on every front. Interloping foreign powers in Finland and Hungry have dampened some of the joy of victory. Envoys have been dispatched to both countries, and a personal meeting with Finland's Mannerheim and Hitler did not go well. Some demands from Hitler did not it well will Mannerheim, and in the end, the relationship grew colder.

Economic events were all rosy as the industrial base continued to soar and sighting of tanks prohibited in the Geneva Convention were flaunted in the open.

Italy June-July 1938

Mussolini has been basking in the limelight of his brokering of Austria and Spain's military alliance in live speeches and on the radio. Also, the Italian military again began to undertake sweeping changes and was active from Italy to Spain to Africa. Add in economic growth from expansion and trade deals with Germany and Spain, and Italian people finally appear to be proud of their El Duce.

Kyoto receives industrial annex (the first of three).

Some progress on the battlefront as Hangchow is captured. Other areas see continued artillery bombardments plus some small advancements of our forces. We call on China to fulfill their word when the Boxer rebellion was defeated and pay the repartitions to all nationals involved which include relative of Americans who were tortured and killed during the Boxer rebellion. We also call on China to try ALL the parties who were implicated in the attacks on foreigners.

The USA announces a "moral" embargo on Japan.

Japan and China continue to fight. Some small advances against China...but nothing spectacular. Economy continues to advance in spite of the need to produce combat units to fight in China. Thailand joins the Japanese headed economic union--designed to advance the economies of the orient.

Germany Aug-Nov. 1938

Fascism continues to sweep across Europe like an unquenchable fire as Turkey and Romania, in back-to-back months, have joined Italy, Germany, and Spain in a permanent military and economic alliance. But it's the vast oil fields of Romania that is the true coup for Germany in their recent string of political success. Given the unending growth of their industrial base, the flow of oil has helped sooth their one Achilles heel. Hitler now openly flaunts Germany's rejection of the Versailles Treaty with parades and vast troops movements to its borders, displaying to the world the hidden war machine they have built.

Italy Aug-Nov. 1938

Mussolini has made quite the name for himself as a political power broker in negotiating the split of Romania, and the acquisition of the Romanian, Spanish, and Turkish navy. November saw Italy send their most capable general, Alfredo Guzzoni, to Tangiers with a large force under him. This move was both provocative and in line with Italy's desire to be major players of the Mediterranean Theatre.
