Hello all,

I'm getting back after a very long long hiatus (years) and I'm trying to start over again, I know there is an updated manual but hasn't been revised since 1.07 version.

What are the necessary steps to catch up with all changes so far?

Threads, manual, AARs, everything you think is worth reading, thanks

It's outdated but plenty of informations, thanks!

I think after all these years no one is willing to invest so huge amount of time updating the files.

The condensed rules are helpful:

Personally am waiting for the next patch to come out before starting another game.

Thanks tyronec.

Sorry, but the 1.11.00 is the last one, or not?

Anyone have any first turn advice for leader shifts, air doctrine settings, air base strikes, etc, etc.

Havent played in a long while and "War in the East PC Update v1.11.00" might have changed a lot around.

Also I am planning to play as Germany on "Challenging" difficulty. Any advice on this, game settings (+1 attack, random weather, full Blizzard), what campaing (planning on Bitter End). I want a challenge, but nothing impossible to pull of a victory in.

Links and videos are welcome. I have checked a lot out but many just give basic info about the game, and little of good performance in the first turn.

Put required planes to fly to 0. Don't forget to change later. Put recon escort on, recon near enemy troops to get free exp for fighters(debatable if worth it). Recon as deep into russia as possible and find out where all the IL-4 bombers are, bomb them first, shift around your bombers to the nearest airfields and transfer them away after bombing. Try to get as many airfields this way to around 10 planes.

1st. Put Model in command of the AGN elite corps with the high morale infantry troops, you can blast all the way to Leningrad with this corps if you stack 4 inf with 3 pioneers each.
Start attacking with infantry only first, look at where the best forts are(f key) deliberate attack those with most troops, most difficult terrain and highest fortifications.
The rest is just swift attacking as far as possible.

Then you should start using the mobile troops to encircle at least all the way towards Lvov and Minsk-Bialystok. You should also cross the Dvina in the north and get Riga.
This is the conservative strategy.

Another one is to create a massive mobile force in the center to drive 'unopposed' towards Moscow and take it before the winter.
One which I recently witnessed was driving as fast as possible towards east in all the AG's not caring about strategic objectives leaving big soviet formations trying to break out with the German infantry lagging behind over 2 turns. Risky.
Not sure which one is the best but decide for the campaign if you want to encircle as many Soviet troops as possible or do you want Moscow.

I'm a really bad Soviet player so I won't say much about them except protect the air force meticulously and try not to get encircled every turn.

Thanks for the Model and IL-4 hints. I was thinking of placing Kluge in command of OKH as well. Not sure if this is a good idea.

Also not sure about the relocation of air units from base to base first turn. Isnt this depleting their attack range if you do it? Is 100% air field attack setting a good idea first turn, since you want to bomb as many planes as possible.

When I Shift+click for manual air base attacks, do I go by "gut feeling" or is there something special you want to think about when you eliminate the Red Air Force form their bases? I dont think AI attacks are the most efficient?

If getting them closer to their target no. Firstly you only have to do that trip once and not many times. Secondly it uses one quarter of the miles/fuel/fatigue etc compared to flying that same distance as a combat mission. In other words you are increasing their potential number of missions.

If you are manually selecting which air groups attack which targets, this bit of air doctrine has no effect. This only applies to auto selection.

Any high morale leader in OKH is a good idea - just remember their other stats will not be as used in OKH. Kluge is also a very good army commander and will have their other stats used more often that way. If you do assign Kluge to OKH in turn 1, you may want to do it after any combats by fourth army units in turn 1 rather than at the beginning. And maybe do fourth army first in turn 1?

AI is not the most efficient. Ideally you want your shortest range targets done by your shortest range bombers and so on to next range level. Your tac bombers can do much of what is west of the Dnepr and get even north of the Dvina. You do not want to "overkill", in other words too many bombers for just a few planes when they could have been better used elsewhere. A lot of airbases with zero planes probably means overkill, a lot left with single figures probably is just right. You can also use "Kethcha's method" (search for it on these forums) of reserving the last miles of an airgroup for the longest distance missions. Do not leave Rumanian tac bombers on reconnaissance airbases where they cannot fly from. And remember not all planes are equal - getting fewer modern fighters can be better than lots of old biplane fighters. Turn 1 is your best chance to get the really long range stuff (Il-4, DB-3B etc).

The first Soviet air units to get to Guards Status contain Tac bombers: SUs and IL2s so as the Axis make sure you bomb these units to dust.
