This is over blown in my opinion. The first game probably had 25 or so scenario's. The 2nd about the same. With the 3rd one they added a bunch of scenario's that were popular with the community. That vastly expanded the scenario list. They included all that community made scenario's to give people easier access to some of the popular ones. Now they are being crucified for it. I guess if there is a version 5 they should strip anything made by the community rather than add it all in. They did make a huge mistake by not advertising that better but anyone who had the old versions already knew all this history.

Full price? Price's back in the 1990's were 50-60 a game. That's still about standard and this was $40. Honestly I expected it to be more. Not trying to be a fan boy here but I am trying to put things into perspective.

Just look through the scenarios. Most of them will say whether or not they have a PO (Programmed Opponent). That would make it a single player scenario. The majority of the scenarios are made to be played single player for one side or the other and sometimes both sides.

This is nuts. ALL the scenarios have AI active, they just don't have special scripted moves, objectives, etc.

Even if the scenario says intended for human sides only, PBEM only, etc, that is just the author telling you that the scenario may be too involved, big, whatever, for Single Player (SP) and they did not do anything extra for Programmed Opponent (PO).

But I've played the non-SP games anyway as SP, because the AI is still active. Sometimes it was a challenge, due to my skill, sometimes not.

Sometimes there is reason it does not play well as AI. Sometimes the author just thinks it would be too easy, but who doesn't like to win? Sure, I want a challenge, but even PBEM will surprise you.

This seems to be a lot of noise about nothing, only because of some text someone read in mission brief. Relax, give it a go. That "setup sides" button allows you to play any side against the AI, it works, regardless of scenario.

The only difference is some scenarios give a much better SP challenge than others, but you can play them ALL as SP!!!

Actually, I recall majority of the scenarios have PO for some side, so they are SP intended. But I play the non PO scenarios as well as SP.

I have to think some of the "loudest" posts are trolls, especially posts saying there is no AI. (That is my personal opinion, and if you disagree, so be it.) However, some are by people who legitimately did not understand that not every scenario can be played against the AI because Matrix wasn't clear about it. This game has a large number of scenarios. I didn't count scenarios tonight, but I did look through three folders out of curiosity, and if Matrix deleted every scenario that has no AI for at least one side, or just put them in a PBEM only folder, there would still be a large number of scenarios playable single player. I would suggest Matrix put out a list of scenarios playable with single player to quell the very real concern of some people who thought every scenario could be played solo or who were interested in certain specific scenarios that they found are not for single player, and to silence the trolls. Matrix can really help things by putting that list out. I also think every scenario should clearly say in the introduction whether it is PBEM only or playable against the AI. Not all tell you that. One problem, as some have already mentioned, is that those who have played previous versions of TOAW already knew this, but knew players probably don't.

As for me, I've played TOAW since the first version, though I didn't play much TOAW III. I have just skimmed over a couple of turns of TOAW IV and am just thrilled, and I play only solo.

The community made scenario are usually the best, there some gems where designers took years to develop a single scenario.

OK I took a quick look and of 286 scenario 121 state the use of both sides as PO and 36 have one side as PO.
Only 33 scenario state they are PBEM only.
In the end all except those explicitly state as PBEM only are playable vs the AI, how good depends on the scenario designer.

Thanks, good job at counting. Hopefully this would stop the nonsense.
