I'm trying to create a Western Front map. I used Google Maps and placed a hex overlay over it, then I opened the editor and started with cities.

After the 5th or 6th city is drawn, distances between them start to be off and I have to start all over again, sadly with the same result. Am I missing something? Is it a math thing?

I'd be grateful if someone pointed me to resources regarding map creation.

A transverse mercator projection is widely used internationally because it is highly accurate when it doesn't cover more than a few degrees east and west. It is the type of map used by most armies of the world today. This is perfect for maps of WW2 in Europe. A transverse mercator projection map can be loaded by ODD in .bmp format and a hexfield applied by ODD. Opart Design and Debug can be had here: http://yves.lr.pagesperso-orange.fr/ODD/ODD.htm

Only the Map Tool is functional for our purposes. The rest is obsolete as far as I can tell. The University of Texas Perry Collection has a fine assortment of maps or you can find one someplace else. I used them and ODD to make a 2.5km map of Western Russia: http://www.operationbarbarossa.net/almost-unbelievably-detailed-2-5km-hex-operation-barbarossa-map/

It's a method that works quite well.

BTW, Mapstor.com has lots of maps but none are free. They are rather inexpensive unless you buy huge sets. You can get WW2 topographic maps there in a wide range of scales.
