On board! This should be a good show. 28C is an awesome setup. Good luck

Looking forward to this one witpqs! Loved your "Rumble in the Southwest" AAR. I hope this game is as enjoyable and goes as long!

So what settings are you playing - PDU-Off or On?

Any significant house rules?

Very nearly the same as last time, basically minimal but aim toward realism but yes it's a game. We both want the same flavor of experience.

PDU = ON.

1941 December 07

I only have the replay but that was enough for me to notice 2 bugs in Intel Monkey's performance, which I shall hunt for.

- Some J LCU picked up as A. {Two units in amphibious assaults on Kota Bharu.}
- LCU making paratroop shock attacks not picked up. {They hit Aparri and Tuguegarao.}

These bugs were not present in testing earlier and must have crept in when fixing other issues shortly before deployment. Such is the nature of it.

I'll paste in the Pearl Harbor attacks and attach the complete combat report for anyone who wants to see it.

Why those dummies continued training flights in the afternoon subsequent to a massive morning air raid I'll never know.

All doubt of simultaneous accidental discharge of thousands of weapons was removed when paratroops seized two towns on Luzon. {The 3 units involved in those two assaults are the ones Intel Monkey did not pick up.}

Here is the full combat report.

It's nicer to look at it in Intel Monkey than in an editor (and certainly better than the in-game display).
This is the first time in I don't know how long that I didn't either have a battleship badly mauled or sunk outright by a midget sub at Pearl Harbor.

It will be several days before I get the next turn so we have plenty of time for idle speculation.

Only Oklahoma looked to be in danger of sinking and was not attacked in the afternoon. I've looked in the combat events and operations reports and see no mention of her.

There is a bug in one of the bases in Manchuko, needing thousands of IJA AV to garrison. Drop Andav a note to check for it...it should be 10 % of that number (200 or 300 I forget which).

I dropped him a note in his AAR, but sometimes he goes a long time without checking in.

I think it is Mukden, and we fixed it during setup. Thanks!

It was something like 200 intended but 2,000 actual, right?

Yep, yours and Mike's memory is better than mine. I would need to look at the map to figure out which base.

Well we just did it recently.

Different bit of help needed: browser link to go to the last post or at least the last page of this AAR. I took my bookmark from the old AAR and modified it with this AAR number (the "m=########") but it only takes me to top of first page. I've played around with it since then but no joy. Any ideas?

The first iteration was I only replaced the old thread number with the new thread number. And I just went to the top of the first page instead of the bottom of the second page. No joy with any attempts since then.

It figures Devious Admiral Wa would live up to his name on the first turn. The prior version of the Pearl Harbor attacks was a ruse. The reality is worse.

California is sunk, as are DM Preble and PC Reliance. They were the only ships sunk across the board.

As you can see in the picture below, Nevada and West Virginia have minor damage compared to other ships and will get priority for full repairs. Tennessee of course will make her own repairs at anchor.

Surface combat TF's are forming at Pearl Harbor, one around 3x modern CL, one around 3x CA, and two of DD's. Will the IJN carrier striking force remain for another day of strikes? Will they begin hunting for the USN carriers that were so nearly caught in port?

Still working on the turn.

Even the "revised" PH attack doesn't seem really bad. If you don't take any more damage right away that appears to be very manageable. I'm curious what the next day will bring.

Edit addendum: it must be discouraging to get a sync bug right on the first turn.

Last time I lost 6x BB outright and damage was pretty bad overall. This time I got off easy. Of course the cruel ruse was even better, but no complaints here!

Edit addendum: it must be discouraging to get a sync bug right on the first turn.

The sync bug has given me another item for Intel Monkey. You can see a sync bug when it happens if you notice that the combatreport.txt file which the turn file writes is different than the one the replay writes. The turn writes over the same file so you have to take note ahead of time. Well it turns out that the combatreport_411207.txt file in the archive folder got written by the replay but did *not* get written over by the turn.

That means when Intel Monkey is told to process new files it can first look at SAVE\combatreport.txt and, if it has the same date inside as SAVE\archive\combatreport_yymmdd.txt has, then the two files can be compared. If the same, OK. If not the same, "Sync Bug!", and Intel Monkey can rename the 'bad' SAVE\archive\combatreport_yymmdd.txt and replace it with the 'good' SAVE\combatreport.txt file.

Once the next turn's replay has been run it is too late because the only 'good' report file is the one the turn file writes in SAVE, the one in SAVE\archive does not get updated and you are stuck with that wrong info for the duration.

1941 December 07

Manually copied the good combat report into archive and reloaded the Intel Monkey database to get correct data. {Procedure: Go into Database Maintenance, click on Create/Replace Main Database & confirm, Exit to Main Menu, Process New Files, voila!}

Destruction of attacking enemy aircraft today was negligible. Maybe this will mitigate in favor of KB striking again tomorrow?

I am unable to conclude that all 6 IJN fleet carriers are present in Hawaiian waters. Only 247 carrier aircraft were seen in one attack, 57 in the other for a total of 304. Is it possible there are only 5 IJN fleet carriers present?

• TF 4x USN DD basing at Soerabaja will patrol at Singkawang.

• TF 4x USN DD from Manila will patrol from Iba to Laoag. There is an enemy landing in progress at Laoag and multiple enemy TF heading toward Iba.

• Saratoga is heading for Hawaii from San Diego.

• Massive exodus from Manila. The tankers (all types) will load fuel before departing. Waiting to carry precious fuel might be in their favor as surface raiders and carrier hangers run out of ordnance. Most ships are grouped by speed with some broken out by range too. Only a few have luxury of escort.

• Two damaged submarines will make for Pearl Harbor while a few with minor damage attempt repairs at Soerabaja. All other submarines will base at Soerabaja and proceed directly to their patrol zones.

• Two B-17 squadrons at Cagayan will strike the airfields at Babeldaob. The two squadrons at Clark have only 2 and 0 undamaged aircraft and will rally at Balikpapan as places repair to await orders. Four damaged fighters are being left behind at Iba as it faces imminent invasion. Hopefully they repair in time to fly out. CAP at Clark is thereby increased but the place is already a mess. Most aircraft from Hong Kong are attempting to escape through Luzon and Calayan just north but enemy attention will catch them.

• Force Z will base at Balikpapan to concentrate with USN forces against a guessed at enemy thrust into those waters, particularly any carrier forces operating from Babeldaob.

• Damaged ships at Singapore will be repaired in the shipyard before sailing. Destroyers will take 1 or 2 days, CL Mauritius 3 days. xAP Dominion Monarch requires 5 days but repairing her 20 engine damage should be worth it.

• DD Vendetta, the only undamaged serious combatant at Singapore, will join with the 3x CL at Palembang for ASW protection when they sortie in response to any incursion outside of the enemy's heavy air cover in the South China Sea. Other warships are being rushed in from the Indian Ocean but there are no destroyers to be found as they are all of hunting the U-boat menace.

• I am thinking about *not* pulling any combat forces out of Singapore, only support units as their contribution is superfluous. The intention is to make Singapore last as long as possible. Air assets will be saved as completely as possible to protect the Indian Ocean. Opinions?

• A squadron of the AVG from Toungoo, a Blenheim IV squadron from Singapore, and a Blenheim I squadron from Alor Star have deployed to Tavoy and tomorrow will sweep Bangkok and strike heavy industry there. The other two squadrons of the AVG would have to be bought out, which I will not do, so they will fight in China when they leave Toungoo.

• The obvious parades of ships making their way from starting locations to Aden, Abadan, Cape Town, and the USA West Coast. Medium and short range ships plus small capacity ships are staying in their theaters.

• The garrison on Skull Island will rely on fog to hide them.

• CL Adelaide is moving from Port Moresby to Rabaul.

• CL Achilles will remain in the vicinity of Fiji, on duty against raiders.

I have more to do going through ground units. Maybe done then.

• The two other Bns of the 30 th Aus Bde are being sea lifted from Sydney to Port Moresby to join their sibling. We are going to dig in there.

• The 8th and 2nd USMC Rgts will be sent to Pago Pago, one amphibious loaded and one transport loaded.

• 5x Clemson DD at Seattle are converting to APD.

Turn is away.

Logically, yes - but I expect it would have meant programming handstands that there was neither time nor money to do - for a single exception to the port attack model for turn 1. One of the many compromises that had to be made to deliver the game within given time and resources.

As a software professional, I am shocked, shocked, that compromises were made for the sake of a deadline or budget!

1941 December 08

Laoag is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Kota Bharu !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Makin !!!

• The KB headed pretty much straight west. Aiming to support a Wake invasion? Makin was invaded today so Tarawa might be next. Our carriers are undetected heading for Canton and could intercede there. But what of KB's movements tomorrow? We lost a destroyer to an air strike from KB as it retires. B-17's attacked the KB twice and made drops from 10,000 ft on Zuikaku and Shokaku.

• Full squadrons (minus shortages) of PBY moved to Hilo, Johnston Island, Palmyra. When recovered enough at Pearl Harbor another will move to Canton Island.

• The Empire mined Lubang instead of Bataan but we assigned mine sweepers to both.

• CA Chokai slid into the Sulu Sea across the north coast of Borneo, sinking two merchants and a precious submarine tender.

• We lost 4 destroyers in the South China Sea to IJN surface forces. 2 RN DD were caught by a CL and a number of DD, one of which they likely destroyed. The survivor will start again from Hong Kong. 4 USN DD sped to their aid and gave good accounts at night. When finally caught in daylight their 4 inch guns were over matched. One sunk, two blazing hulks scuttled, and the survivor a flaming wreck but just might get lucky.

• 85 enemy fighters seen at Aparri.

• KB2 is 3 hexes east of Samar, scouting 1x CV, 2x CVL, many DD, 43:F, 69:B, 6:A. It sure looks like a fleet carrier deployed here instead of to Hawaii. Does this look like two CVL? Vals?
quote:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Guiuan at 82,85

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A5M4 Claude x 9
A6M2 Zero x 8
D3A1 Val x 22

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
xAKL Escalante, Bomb hits 4, and is sunk
xAKL Taurus, Bomb hits 5, and is sunk

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x D3A1 Val releasing from 3000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 250 kg SAP Bomb
12 x D3A1 Val releasing from 10000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 250 kg SAP Bomb

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring xAKL Escalante
Heavy smoke from fires obscuring xAKL Taurus

• Another two-ship TF (CA & DD?) appears heading into the Sulu Sea from near Subic bay.

• Our Seagulls - only a small flock - scored some hits on an xAKL but paid when fighters caught them without escort in a later attack.

• No air strike or sweep from Tavoy on Bangkok. The fighters are ordered to escort the bombers instead of sweeping. Some bombers made the additional hop to Moulmein. Some more fighters arrived, these from Georgetown.

• We've begun a general withdrawal of forces in Malaya to Singapore. The general strategy is to make Singapore last as long as possible (as mentioned earlier).

• 10 enemy LCU are at Hong Kong, but of course they are doomed.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Tarawa !!!

• Problem. We have lost contact with KB. Did they just happen to be under a cloud formation when a PBY passed by or did they make a high-speed run in an unexpected direction? They could be SE Johnston Island just outside of yesterday's search coverage where another high-speed run would put them within striking distance of Enterprise. Lexington, Enterprise, and Indianapolis (in-hex with Enterprise) will make full speed toward Canton Island tomorrow. If KB has obtained SigInt or merely guessed right that will put our carriers out of range and search from Palmyra should spot KB.

• Saratoga and following AO will head for Christmas Island.

• One enemy ship is just NE of Kavieng. CL Adelaide is at Rabaul and will intercept at Kavieng. Empire flying boats from Port Moresby will attack with 500 lb bombs but at their training level more likely will drop cocktails and napkins.

• Our fighters over Luzon are doing OK, taking more losses versus enemy fighters but also getting a few bombers. One flight of enemy bombers was caught alone and hurt badly as they sank 2x small YO.

• San Fernando will likely fall tomorrow to a division equivalent force put ashore today. With 2x tank regiments drying their treads the PA Inf Div at Lingayen won't stand a chance and will withdraw to Clark. Another at Iba will also move to Clark as is the the 4th Marine Rgt. Our tanks are at Baler waiting to ambush a small enemy force, likely paratroopers.

• KB2 is still just E of Samar.

• There is an invasion convoy near KB2, presumed target Legaspi.

• There is heavy readio traffic without accompanying naval search hit just E of Luzon. Presuming invasion convoy targeting Mauban or Baler.

• Yesterday reported our armor on Luzon at Baler, should have written Bayombong.

• Two enemy TF's scouting as 2 ships and 3 ships are heading into the Celebes Sea. Now S of Davao they aim to intercept those fleeing the Cylon tyranny. Oh, wrong movie. At any rate the USN cruisers and destroyers just refueled and consolidated at Balikpapan and will patrol to stop them S of Jolo. Force Z will refuel at Balikpapan tomorrow.

• Two merchants sunk in the South China Sea by CA Maya, CL Natori. One sunk mid-Philippines near Roxas by Val's. Another by submarine torpedoes and sub-laid mines near Singapore.

• 3x CL and a DD on their way to Brunei. 2 more DD just leaving Singapore to join them. They will strike at enemy surface forces in the Sulu Sea or South China Sea out of enemy air strike range if they can manage it.

• Still no success getting pilots to sortie against Bangkok heavy industry.

• Working on some opening day garrison issues in India. and at Mandalay.

• >1,400 AV will attack Ichang tomorrow. The Imperials left behind one unit of unknown strength there.

• So far most of our units in exposed positions in China are slipping away while only a couple have been caught.

Attached is the complete combat report.
