How do i use the combat report to centre the map on a combat? And stay there.

I open the combat report and right click on the hex location and it centres the map on the combat, however as soon as i exit the combat report the map goes back to the previously selected unit.

Is this how its supposed to work or am i missing something?

Thanks

You mean the Combat Results window, right? That is default behaviour.

During combat the map jumps to each hotspot and the Combat Results are openend after the last one. If you click on a hex in the Results, the map shows that hex with a white circle. Incidentally, if the map under the Combat Results can stay then the white circle shows up immediately; but if the map had to jump to the hex then there is no white circle the first time and I must click that hex again in the Results list to see the circle, that seems to be an error.

How the map behaves when you exit the Combat Results window seems to depend on the visibility of the selected unit. If the selected unit is visible where the map happens to be at that time, then the map stays where it is; if the selected unit is not visible, then the map tries to center on it (this also depends on the map edges etc.). This is similar when you exit the Planned Combats list window.

This repositioning seems not wrong but perhaps is not what you want or expect.

Personally I would like it more if the map stays where it is when I close the Planned Combats and Combat Results windows. I can find the selected unit myself when I want (scroll or press 5).

What you can do to avoid repositioning is zoom out and display the whole map before opening the Planned Combats dialog and before resolving combats.

You need to remember that each time though and my mouse wheel doesn't zoom well (it often skips one or more zoom levels) so it would be great if there were hotkeys for zooming between the map levels. I propose PgUp and PgDown to zoom between map levels. (Currently there are only hotkeys for the Y-zoom within a level, not between levels, if I'm correct).

Also regarding automatic map repositioning, personally I would like the option to disable the obligatory hotspot jumping of the map during combat resolve at all, to leave the map where it is when I click Resolve. (Sometimes I like to see live how my plan succeeds or fails, but it strains my eyes and often it's too long and/or too quick for me to register the details anyway and I'd like to skip to the results immediately or just hear the battle sounds in the distance and see the silver BTS swords at my pace etc.)

Edit: deleted about No Update setting, which doesn't apply here.

By accident, I found out that I can zoom in/out using the back/forward buttons of the mouse. If you have a 5-button mouse you may want to give it a shot.

That doesn't work here unfortunately.

JP

there is an option to use MouseWheelZoom=Y in Opart4.ini.

Thanks for the detailed reply - appreciated

The right click to centre on combat is on the face of it a good feature however, to me, it is rendered useless by the fact that when you close the combat windows it doesn't stay on the combat you right clicked. If i centre on a unit its because i want to examine the situation around the combat otherwise why would i bother doing it?

Isn't this what happens anyway if you just left click instead of right click?

Thanks for the suggestion - just tried it but still doesn't get around the problem of not being able to centre on specific combats when the combat screens are closed.

My wishlist would be for it to work as follows:

* right click to centre on combat (as it does already)
* screen centres on combat (as it does already)
* BUT combat window NEVER blocks the combat hex
* the combat window doesn't appear centre screen - its moved to make the combat hex visible
* combat window is moveable
* you can click an units outside of the still open combat window to examine them
* if you close the combat window the screen stays where it is (which is what it doesn't do at the moment)

Thank you and I tried; that one turns my mousewheel on or completely off.

The problem was not that my mouse wheel cannot zoom; it can. Sometimes fine, but sometimes it skips and zooms more than one level at a time (perhaps due to wear because it is an old mouse). Therefore I was thinking that PgUp and PgDn to zoom would be convenient.

I'm not sure where you mean.
Right-clicking or left-clicking in the Combat Results window makes no difference for me.

Does this help you with some of that?

I can drag the Combat Results window it at its border, and it opens where I closed it last time in the same game.
(This is in the public beta 4.0.1.15, I don't remember how that window was before.)

And you can click Spacebar and make windows transparant in Player Options so that they don't block your view.

As far as I see the map is not repositioned if the selected unit is visible when I close that window; it is only repositioned when the selected unit is not visible.
