Singapore and Hong Kong taken so quickly that frees up large LCUs for whatever your follow on invasions might be.

KUDOS on the rapid capture of Singapore!!

Get those minesweepers over there to clear the mines and shift your forces from Saigon and CRB to this bigger port and base. Then, mine the port yourself from those nasty Dutch subs. Get your ACMs there (converted from PBs).

Heavy Industry in Malaya: I expand G'town to 20 and Sing to 80 steadily. Don't repair any Resources or Manpower anywhere.

Java: Plan on landing here and at multiple bases to ensure speedy conquest. I worry about Allies loading troops in Batavia due to the urban terrain bonus, so I focus here first. Danpasar off SE tip is great for an Air HQ to isolate the island with Nell/Betty.

I agree on the landing approach to java. Losing the 4DMS at Palambang hut as they were going to Singapore next but we will bring a backup TF down. The other negative at the moment was not taking Singkawang/Kuching. I needed those air firlds to start surprising the allied AF. Palembang will be hard to support without secondary bases to support and/or attack.
Good thought on the Hi that is already becoming a problem. I shut down some merchant shipping to be able to handle the HI for pilot training. Unfortunately thought of it too late.

Bet you nearly had kittens when that STF popped up on your CVLs! I would have uttered an unprintable word and grabbed a shot of something to drink. You got lucky with the results.

I can never truly predict what the heck a TF will do. In my long-running game with Dan, I have lost several BBs and CAs due to them 'hanging' in a location instead of going straight in. HATE IT!

With the Allies having so many more toys, be careful about splitting KB in CenPac.

No it wasn't kittens it was the single malt scotch!!

Well the Balikpapan invasion finally took place, a few days late but will the bizarre interaction, there was no Force Z. If they do bring force Z up I have my surface fleet blocking the harbor, so he would have to attack it. I have over extended everything to make this work so one carrier force is now withdrawing and I will leave one to proect the invasion force from an air attack.

We have not taken Tarakan yet, but did take Batangas and Subic bay. They appear to have left Bataan lightly defended and focused on saving Manila. Taking Bataan would be great as Manila can always be overcome. I can also start clearing the minefields earlier.

I made a huge mistake with Rabaul. Once the surface raiders hit Tarawa, I should have altered the Rabual assault. I knew it but forgot and they got hit. Fortunately they made it to Manus which is easily taken. I'll try to get the rest of the TF away quickly.

The other effort I missed on the timing was Midway. I should be in position to attack Midway today, but the invasion fleet is still several days away. Now is the time to take it so venturing further south will need air support from KB-type force, so I decided to wait until after Midway. I have sufficient carrier support to take Java without the KB going.

Toboali or Billiton: Capture these empty bases and quickly build AF to size 2 (or larger) to allow Vals/Kates to control Allied access to southern Sumatra and preparing for attacks on Java. In this mod, you have extra engineers in many LCUs to allow this. Use a Fast Transport TF or two to get some troops to one of them quickly rather than wait on slower Amphib TFs.

Agreed but Singkawang and Kuching need to be secured first. I need him out of the South China Sea

Still a major part of the force survives. I will sacrifice one AKl and maybe the rest get away. Things could prove interesting if he follows north but I don't expect it. That will be our last daring adventure. We have the ability to maintain localozed air superiority and we will do so going forward.

I HATE those small STFs! They are hard to spot and, seemingly, wreak huge amounts of damage if you cannot hit them first.

He is using a good strategy making you cover all your TFs for fear of being attacked. It is smart and works.

Dec 19-23

Its been awhile since I've had a chance to update. Not much is happening particularly good things. I guess I can say I accurately reflected the Japanese mentality of detailed planning in the opening stages. The broad based aggressive attack was dependent upon it mostly working. The failure to take Singkawang and Kuchang with the initial invasions leaves a hole where I am unable to setup the long range bombing of Java and thus have to rely totally on fighters to protect Palembang. This is not only increasing our losses, but it also not very affective against Mike and Mike's aggressive countering. The initial plan called for utilizing most of the 14th, 15th,16th and 25th armies plus the Imperial Guard, in an attempt to overwhelm, Singapore and the Philippines. There were little in backup assets. Still I have some reinforcements coming to Singkawang. To be safe I preceded them with a battleship surface fleet covered by the carriers (also using the carrier search. They were hiding in Kuchang and came out the night of the 21/22. I don't think they realized this was not an invasion. the results were predictable.

We searched for another couple of days and have found nothing. The invasion fleet should arrive tomorrow covered by both surface and air combat fleets. After taking Singkawang, I will move forces to Kuchang and take it. I will continue to try and find a way to air cover Palembang another few days despite the cost.

On the east side, the failure to take Tarakan has left him with a base to attack Miri by air. He has re-entered that base after it was clear my initial landing wasn't sufficient. I have decided to use the Fast transports in Saigon and Cam Rahn Bay to pick up the 61st Guards from the northern Burma efforts and re-inforce the Tarakan invasion. Which brings us to the Balikpapan operation. This has been and still is a lively theater. Because of his past history and naval hit and runs I thought I would try for a "significant" naval battle with Force Z on the assumption he would raid Balikpapan. A cruiser based surface fleet was stationed at the entrance to Balikpapan. I was right as he raided. but first it was a motor boat force on the 19/20th

I didn't get the Renown, but did put a serious dent in Force Z which should help us in our Java operations. I tried to chase him, but he was still fast enough to get away. I am probably losing the Cruiser, but all in all it looks like a good encounter.

That is not the only action at Balikpapn. he has developed a very interesting defensive strategy, even though I have take the base. There are still mines at Balikpapan, he has apparently place 2 subs in the harbor as well. We damaged one on the 19th but as you see he didn't leave.

So I am stuck with the problem of clearing mines and not losing DMS. If I escort the DMS in the mines hit the escorts and If I don't the subs get the DMS. I will probably try to bring in a large number of DMS covered by PB/PC and see if that helps. I still have to clear Singapore/Bataan and I don't want the losses to mount. We already lost a few DMS to one of his "surprise" surface raiders.

In the Philippines, Manila has proven stubborn. The approach was to use heavy ground attack from the air followed by deliberate attacks on the ground. However, only on the 2oth did that happen.

He now has a level 2 fort back. They are just too strong to take on at the moment. While I wanted to have the Manila port (and all the VP with the forces), it is clear we need to choke them off a bit. Plus I don't want to drain alto of forces in this. The bigger surprie in not being able to take Bataan which he left undefended.

Meanwhile the Midway operation is underway. I had split the KB and sent one way to the north to avoid detection and hopefully surprise the American carriers if they attempted to defend. The invasion force, covering surface fleet and carrier force came in from the west. It's a slow moving invasion force, so we certainly aren't going to surprise anyone. The plan didn't work because the fist force he spotted was the northern carrier force. So since that surprise didn't work they attacked the Kure base which showed some shipping, but none was found.

No planes were hit and none have attacked, so the assumption is he has evacuated Midway. The irony is the carrier TF coming from the west still has not been spotted. I expect the invasion to occur on the 25th.

Our only other highlight came on the 20th. I am moving the subs to the east of Pearl as the AWS activity is getting severe to the west. In doing so we passed to the North of PH and

Going forward, I had planned to attack Java from both sides simultaneously. Given the forces still in Java I will take Ambon and Kendari next. I sent a carrier group scouting New Guinea to make sure no raiders are coming up and found nothing. I suspect they are laying in wait for me at attack Rabaul which is fine. The second carrier group is getting replenished, so I'll start those attacks just after Christmas.

I think that catches everyone up

Oh yea, one more. I was going to send the paratroops to Port Blair, hesitated due to the troubles at Palembang and Singkawang. Recon show he hmay have re-inforce Port Blair beyond the paratroopers ability to take it. However, first view of Ragoon shows nobody home. They have moved east to stop me at the river. if that is confirmed, then that will be the next drop.

Dec 26 - Jan 4

Between the real holidays, having several game issues associated with the windows patch, I haven't had time to write much, so this will be more summary and plans than details.

The Port Blair operation started out well, but we were unable to land the full unit for whatever reason. I then chose to save the remainder of the unit. After several days of fighting this fragment was lost. We did get another freighter with the subs. After the success of the subs at Sabang, we moved them to Colombo. I will mount an invasion of Port Blair shortly, but at the moment I have no plans to go to India. I would like them to think I'm going there however.

In Burma, we took Mergui, Tavoy and Moulmein. We were advancing on Pegu when he double back to re-take Moulmein. So I split the two RTA divisions. The 3rd re-took Moulmein and the 4th pushed into Pegu to establish a foothold. The 15th Army is marching up to re-inforce the operation. He has been bombing my 2 division in northern Burma to slow them down (successfully). We have not reached Taung Gvi yet. Once we attack there, I'll see whether we can split the divisions yet. I would like to take Lashio and be able to hold it. We could then operate in Western China, which I think will be more beneficial than India.

In Malaya, we are almost in complete control. All remaining Allied forces are in Kuala Lumpur. We are surrounding them for the final elimination. The Singapore mines have been cleared, the airfield is 100% operational and the port is down to 33 damage. In Sumatra, Palembang continues to be pounded. The airfield has been put out of commission, so we are using Praboemoelin to provide cap. Rotating Oscar and Nate units which our Zero units get replacements, this has also been slow. We have taken Djambi and Medan. Following the capture of Singkawang, we moved the bombers in and started hitting the various Java locations. Could not find force Z in any port, so its whereabouts still unknown. Focused some on Batavia to try to neutralize the airfield but even with fighter support, it has been expensive, Trying to re-inforce that unit at the moment.

On the other side of Borneo we tried again to Tarakan bringing in the 81st Guard and a bombardment force. While we had some initial success we were still unable to take the location. Another bombardment run and shock attack are planned for tomorrow. We also tried to reinforce Balikpapan but ran into some bug. We were brining a unit down on fast transport from Cam Ranh Bay. However the TF always wanted to end run the Philippines not proceed thru Sulu Sea. I kept forcing it thru the Sulu Sea. When it reached the hex to the west of Tawi Tawi, it stopped and tried to unload the unit there (partially unloading). Again this is West of Tawi Tawi not on Tawi Tawi. There is only a sliver of land in the hex. Anyway it stopped unloading. You could not cancel the unload, the ships still had most of the unit and it wouldn't move any where. I finally resolved the problem, after several days, by creating a surface combat fleet and transferring part of the force to it. Move the force and then repeat the process. I put the fleets back together in Sandakan, retasked them as fast transport and proceeded to Balikpapan. Only part of the unit went as the remainder is still on that sliver of land.

In the Phillipines, we have taken Bataan and cleared the mine field there. That has Manila cutoff. We moved our Aparri force down to Bayombong where we had trapped some forces and eliminated them. That leaves only the forces in Manila. A large force but one that is cut off. We have been bombing it daily. In Mindanao, we took Dadjangas and Cotabato.

After the Midway victory, we stayed to see if anything was going to occur, but it was quiet. The KB had been split so I moved it to Truk to re-combine. The one force ran a bit low on fuel and took longer. I had it stop at Kwajalein for a quick topoff and then on to Truk. The Coral Sea will be the next action there, but nothing is set up yet. I want to take Ocean and Nauru first. I normally get them early, but those marauding raiders curtailed that.

The next big effort started yesterday. Three invasion fleets, a surface fleet and a 6 carrier air fleet left Babeldaob together. The objectives are Ambon, Kendari and maybe Makassar, depending upon what I see for resistance. They are all following a re-inforcement TF headed to Ternate to hopefully mask what is occurring. Prior to this I had subs visit all the ports in Java trying to find Force Z to no avail. There is enough firepower in both the air fleet and the surface fleet to finish them off if they show up.

Jan 5-7

Or better known as the Battle of Ambon.

Relative to Jan 7 the earlier days are hardly worth mentioning. Tarakan continues to hold out. Forces are moving in for the final destruction on Manila. We captured Ulan Melintang and Melak. Landed at Muntok. Bombed bases in Java, in the Celebes and Ambon in advance of our major offensive. The Allies, bombed oil in Palembang and Balikpapan, interdicted the 1st/2nd RTA near Taung Gyi. All the normal stuff.

I had been trying to micro manage the position of the 3 invasion fleets to time them for the upcoming operation. Everything was set to go on the 7th.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I find when a major battle is going to occur, other theaters of operation get some action. So as I sat down to watch it unfold, the first report was

Still today was the battle of Ambon. I knew Mike and Mike would have a surprise and they didn't disappoint. According to the search reports, they brought 42 ships including 10 carriers to the defense. And while I am sure they do not have 10 carriers, we did see close to 300 planes in various encounters, so I believe we can safely say "we have found the bulk of the Allies carrier force". Whether the operation was successful or not it was clearly going to be costly. I had 6 carriers (CVL/CVE) whose role was defense of the invasions and opportunity naval attacks. However, I had envisioned that with surface forces not a major carrier force, so these attacks of opportunity would be escort less. Fortunately only a few actually pushed forward the attack and thus no damage was done to their carrier TF and our losses were small. By the same token no air assault was carried out on our carrier TF as they focused on the Ambon invasion.

Early in the evening as the forces deployed the submarines were the first combantants.

The interesting thing is that it appears they fell for the Ambon only attack. Those air attacks outside Kendari are against the Kendari invasion for and there appears to be nothing stations there. More on this next post.

Finally we took Muntok.

Certainly the first appearance of the allied carriers was not expected. While we should take Ambon, we lost all the transports and a ight cruiser. The two battlecruisers are hurt but may be able to escape. It also does not appear as if he can stop the Kendari invasions. However, with the presence of the major carrier force we will withdraw the Makassar invasion. We can send them to Tarakan and finally take that stubborn base.

The tactical options are dependent upon their next move. Was this a surprise attack and thus a quick withdrawal of the carrier force or does he see the Kendari invasion as easy pickings, as far as the transports are concerned. Certainly I don't have the carrier force to prevent their destruction. But are they sure of that. To hedge and still be aggressive, I sent the carrier force to NE of Kendari and they will provide air cover. In order for them to be attacked there, the allies will have to commit their carries to move NW deep into the Banda Sea. Unnoticed in all the activity was a surface fleet, only destroyers and 1 cruiser, but they have been ordered into the Banda Sea. If the allies are aggressive, there may be a night battle and with some luck maybe we can scratch a flattop or two.

This also means there is no significant force defending the Coral Sea area. The KB has been parked at Truk. Now some action will begin.

It's too bad that your BattleCruisers took a hit. Hopefully, you will be able to save them and get them back to Japan. At least your Carriers are safe, and were not impacted.... I have already lost 2 CVs and 2 CVLs due to a miss-step and bad timing... I was moving a CV force north while the other stayed around too long, and whammo, 4 Carriers gone.

Allied players sure know how to make you pay for mistakes.

Congrats as well as getting some key bases early, especially Singapore. Very well done. I'm still trying to get that one, and it's really good to see that you were able to get it so quick..... Well done...

Give 'em hell Bristoduke,,,,we need to show BTS Allied players that they are not to mess with the Imperial forces :) :)
