Sorry, I'm sure this is discussed on here somewhere, didn't see it.

I'm still running v 1.09 or so with a game and would like to finish it. Can i make a separate install using my existing 1.09 so i can keep running it, and then upgrade to 1.11?

Copy your 1.09 installation to a new folder, create a new desktop symbol for it and verify it runs. Then you should be able to update the main installation to a newer version without breaking ongoing games.
