I was just fooling around with Sipres NATO counters and came up with this. Is it worth pursuing?

It’s nice. It allows you to see the terrain

That's true. I never thought about that. Good observation.

Now this is what I've been talkin about! How long I've been trying to get the "counter makers" to realize that large graphics infringe upon the terrain effects.

I like the ships and plane silhouettes, but how about the NATO emblems for the ground units. No need for the counter base, or make the base transparent.

Make the NATO sprites like we see in the historical deployment maps, only the emblems are necessary with the appropriate size(XX, X, XXX etc.), strength, national color, and tech upgrades.

Nice job Hairog.

Hairog, good go - this idea has promise.

I've thought of doing that and still get the itch to try it out from time to time.

But I haven't done it because it's a lot of work and will probably be (1) very easy to for the eye to lose the nato symbols in the map terrain, (b) it might be difficult to differentiate all but primary colors and (c) the aircraft silhouettes would probably be too out of step with the ground unit symbols and need to change too. That aside, I still might give it a go someday - especially now that I know someone else is interested. Maybe on that "bleached map" mod it would work well.

This sort of idea:

Cool idea Hairog!
Go, go, go!!!

I agree with James Taylor about NATO emblems with size indicators (XXXX, XXX, XX etc.) for infantry type units.
And I vote war flags for HQ's.

If you're interested, I have a bunch of airplane & ship silhouette files in .svg format that I'd be happy to mail across.

Exactly like the map that mroyer posted.

If we could just get the unit identifications on the counters that would get us more historical depth and enhance the gaming experience.

This feature would be connected to the in game naming of the units the players have control over currently.

Hubert, if you could code this it would likely be the first wargame with such a feature. Additional legacy for an already "Hall of Fame" game.

Something like that? (I think with Nato symbol with background color) could be olive green for US, Grey for Germans ect...

Hello Phalen

I am thinking about reworking my original MOD (to add some tech level silhouettes and also a Zoom version)
I use Inkscape to make the counter Mod so if you have some silhouettes in Svg format to share i would be glad to use them.

Just Pm me

Christophe

YES!! 100% agree for NATO counters. It might be a problem for the 3D units though - maybe that's why it wasn't coded that way in the first place.

Nice! I was thinking transparent fill's for the symbols too but your idea of filling solves the issue of color assignments to nations that I was concerned about.

Just got back 0nline. Fantastic response! Love the way ideas feed off each other.

Here is a mod of an old game (I wish someone would do a remake) Time of Fury.
