It looks like the 8 destroyers operating out of San Diego are gaining experience.

Getting shot at does wonders for the learning curve.

My editor's spellcheck dictionary is set to US English, so words like "armour" which I use when referring to Japan, British, etc, units gives an error. That makes sense because "armor" is the US spelling. Petrol I didn't think would give an error because there are not two different versions, and when I saw the red underline I thought "have I been spelling that wrong all these years?". I didn't realize "petrol" simply didn't appear in that US English spellcheck dictionary. But "petrel" does!

Don't worry, the entire staff was flogged.

1942 January 01

INVADED
Amphibious TF 297 unloading at Hollandia
Amphibious TF 298 unloading at Vanimo
Amphibious TF 88 unloading at Cape Gloucester
Clark Field, Cagayan, Kuala Lumpur, Kukong, Wenchow, Pakhoi are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Dinagat is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Kuching !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Hollandia !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Vanimo !!!

Overall
• Possible sighting of an IJN fleet carrier near Singkawang.

• xAK which fled to Cape Town and have less than about 14,000 mile range are being sent to the Panama Canal to operate in the Pacific as are most tankers. Last game I ran convoys for both supply and fuel to Cape Town to feed convoys to Australia and India. This game I will try to push nearly all fuel and supply for Australia long term through the Pacific SLOC. India can get all fuel it needs from Abadan and 2,200 supply per day average from Aden plus Abadan. All supply from Cape Town will go to India and related theaters. There is one tanker convoy now on route Cape Town to Adelaide carrying 50,600 tons fuel but that will be the last unless plans change.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• The enemy subs are still doing their thing but a couple were at least hit during actions near Hawaii.

• Arizona and Tennessee should pull into Bremerton the day after tomorrow. West Virginia is leaving Pearl Harbor tonight for San Francisco. Nevada and Oklahoma are repairing and upgrading at Pearl Harbor. That leaves Maryland (12/8 knots) and Pennsylvania (15/8 knots) still to depart for San Francisco. That will await completing conversions of 4x APD's to form the bulk of their ASW escort.

Pacific
• We have oilers positioned to trail and support any carrier movements. Tankers have set up one refueling station and more will be established in the coming weeks. In about a week a number of tankers will arrive at Pago Pago where one will unload and the rest will form a tanker farm for the time being.

• Tarawa and Tabiteuea are the only Gilbert Islands seized so far, but Nauru Island and Ocean Island are long gone.

• There have been no contacts with enemy submarines in this area.

• A PBY group will begin searching from Pago Pago tomorrow.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• All troops evacuated from Salamaua, some to Cairns. Those and some troops from Lae flown to Cairns are now being airlifted into Port Moresby. C Coy NG Rifles is still inland walking to Terapo and will be transported once they make the coast.

• The air transport of the British air HQ's from Java to Darwin is well underway and after them will be the USA and PA air support units. Those units needed will then lift from Darwin to Port Moresby to bolster defenses there. When the PBY-4 operating from Cairns are finished they will move to Darwin and pitch in.

• Tomorrow begins PBY air search from Norfolk Island, albeit with limited air support. The cats at Port Moresby are done with transport duties and will search tomorrow to find KB1. They will soon move to Australia to conserve supply at PM.

Philippines
• The Empire's movements have slowed here. Some units are exiting Clark Field no doubt to R&R in Manila after battle losses.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• Our AA at Singapore continues to shoot down enemy aircraft and damage many more.

• Several times IJN destroyers cleared mines at Singkawang 'the easy way' (unfortunately). Obviously crack crews.

• I did think Kuching would hold for a day or two.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• Still fortifying India, especially Ceylon. Burma will not get much in the way of reinforcements.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• Whistling in the waves so far.

Likely this spot is where the battle for Sian will begin.

I would beg to differ, that cute little red stack four hexes away to the NE can get there a lot faster, especially if your opponent
has armor and knows how to use it.

1cent (saving the other cent for oldest daughter)

I know he has armour in the hex I highlighted (I think at least 2 or 3 units), I suspect he has some armour in the hex you referred to.

As your map of northern China looks eerily familiar, I'm going to start training two small fighter squadrons in recon. Just a thought.
I also can't get any offensive missions to fly from Sian. Not sure why not on this.

First a "BTW": the Admiral has been traveling (in the US gathering Intel, no doubt). Might be a turn later but I have visitors coming for a day and a half so maybe not.

Sian in this scenario starts out as a size 1 airbase which I think precludes offensive missions. I'm waiting to see if I can blunt his initial offensive before I even consider expanding the base. Supply is too dear and I have already decided to give up the expanded fortifications at Kukong.

And of course my fighters are pitiful and my fighter pilots, training hard as they are, are barely up to the quality of the pitiful planes. I might bring the AVG into Sian when he starts hitting that base.

Overall
• The Imperial subs are still very comfortable playing with our destroyers although more and more of the encounters are ASW attack rather than Sub attack.

• At Clark Field and Singapore our flak seems to be destroying about 7 or 8% of attacking aircraft.

• Search contact with an undetermined number of IJN fleet carriers near Lae.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Multiple subs still present off the West Coast and Hawaii, some now in TF's of 2.

• Routing of merchants and tankers is still going without further loss or even contact with IJN subs. Still an active project.

Pacific
• More of the same. Canton Island is receiving supply and just received enough PBY's to fill out the search group.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Five subs dispatched to the defense of Australia are passing through the Santa Cruz Islands and are being sent straight to patrol areas in the Solomon Sea. Maybe one of them can hit a carrier.

• The two PBY-4 squadrons at Cairns have moved to Darwin to continue airlift duties there.

Philippines
• Slow consumption continues.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• The ARD's from Java are all at sea. Let's hope they fare better than Dewey Dry Dock.

• Enemy carriers no longer seen. With so many subs nipping at their heels they might have moved abruptly to break contact.

China
• Disaster at Wenchow.

You were highly disrupted, 900+ pre-attack casualties, zero forts and out of supply. Looks like you will have fewer units ti supply now.

Odd Wenchow feel so early with so much there. I had until mid-April with a much worse ratio of starting AV. I guess the dice weren't kind this time.

From your map above looks like you have a good blockade around Sian. Any other major x3 defensive setups developing behind Changsha? I find that center undefendable and like to start early digging behind it.

Part of the Wenchow turn of events this time was the adjustment Walter made. After seeing it take so long in so many AAR's and having it take so long in our last game - as he put it due to him bringing too little - Walter brought much more force right away. Possibly some were better units too, Wenchow got immediate aerial bombardment to stymie fortification, significant aerial bombardment overall, some naval bombardment...

I only have a few units at places behind Changsha but others are on the way. Tuyun is reinforced and fortifying, which I think is a significant defensive point. The biggest factor will be pulling back in time. I want to avoid him battering units and destroying their heavy equipment.

INVADED

Clark Field, Cagayan, Sambas, Port Dickson, Kukong, are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Port Swettenham is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Kuala Lumpur !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Salamaua !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Biak !!!

Overall
• One of the problems with playing the campaign game is a side effect of the time it takes. Our last game was 5 years and 2 months. Now, at the beginning of the beginning (apologies to Churchill) I just don't have any aircraft!

• SigInt shows some AA units aboard ship heading for Cam Ranh Bay. Are they destined for China or Burma?

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Extensive IJN sub activity. They still attack our destroyers as often as our destroyers attack them.

• Tennessee and Arizona are in the shipyard at Bremerton. West Virginia is well on her way to San Francisco. Nevada and Oklahoma must wait 4 more days for adequate escort.

• Warspite has completed upgrades/repairs at Seattle so both she and Colorado are up to date and ready to go.

Pacific
• No action.

• Planning for more reinforcements for Pago Pago and Fiji.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• We lost an xAKL to a sub just outside Sydney. A replacement to supply Norfolk Island is being sent via a circuitous route.

• IJN carriers are still operating in the Solomon Sea shielding a number of convoys and task forces.

Philippines
• Slow strangulation.

• According to SigInt there is a heavy artillery unit landing at Lingayen right now. Perhaps the Empire wants to break resistance at Clark Field/Bataan sooner than later.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• KB2 is again spotted, about 3 hexes WNW of Singkawang.

• Convoys are sighted heading west from Babeldaob to Manado.

• There are enemy bombers at Singkawang: KB2 can advance it's umbrella under LBA cover.

China
• Tomorrow the last of our units will leave Kukong.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• I might lose India but it will be a bear for the Empire to capture all of Ceylon.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• No action, not even any sightings.

Complete combat report attached.

Colorado has an important upgrade starting Jan. 01 that improves her AA IIRC. She cannot do much right now anywhere on the map (because of the lack of air cover and effective ASW and her own crew experience) so I favor doing the upgrade rather than putting her out there. Warspite has enough experience and a few knots extra speed to be somewhat useful if you can hide and protect her.

I looked into that and it seems like (in this mod, Babes 28-C) Colorado was getting the upgrade at game start, which her sister ships became eligible for on Jan 1, '42. She finished up several days before Warspite.

As you say, her AA is rather weak in spite of the upgrade. Not Dec 7th weak, but still weak enough to give pause. I think I am going to get her to Pearl Harbor to stand by for operations. I have no operations presently in mind for the USN old BB's but they can bombard Midway if conquered or perhaps even fight there. As was the case in history I am shying away from deploying them in the broader reaches of the Pacfic due to fuel concerns. For example each of the three carriers at Pago Pago has remained at anchor there since it arrived. I think that is helping the situation so I will be more ready/able to strike when the right opportunity arises. I know that some old BB's protected convoy routes in the Pacific for a time but that was later when adequate fuel could be moved around.

I haven't decided what to do with Warspite. Maybe Australia? Send her across the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean? Operate with the USN? I'm pretty sure the DD's that just delivered Tennessee and Arizona to Bremerton will take over ASW duties near San Diego/Los Angeles while those more capable destroyers on duty now take Yorktown to Pago Pago.

INVADED
Amphibious TF 297 offshore of Nabire
Amphibious TF 88 offshore of Umboi Island
Amphibious TF 298 offshore of Hansa Bay
Clark Field, Cagayan, Sambas, Kukong, are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Siargao is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Port Dickson !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Mergui !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Arawe !!!

Overall
• Very measured but continuous advances by the Empire. Careful and forceful.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• The ASW dance continues. The straggler xAK and TK are arriving at the alternate ports on the West Coast. In a few days they will all be in port and have escort to San Francisco (merchants) and Los Angeles (tankers).

Pacific
• Movement of supplies, fuel, and units. No contacts.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• The day after tomorrow USN subs will begin menacing KB1 in the Solomon Sea. If enemy operations continue down the Papua coast to Buna and Oro Bay our subs should get a few shots in.

Philippines
• The same holding pattern at Clark Field.

• At least one more Imperial unit moving on Cagayan.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• A slight incursion by KB2, now 1 hex NW of Billiton under heavy rain clouds. A strike against our corvettes on ASW patrol got no hits. The remaining combatants which can leave Java (due to range limitations) are doing so.

• An enemy sub spotted ARD Soerabaja at Banjoewangi after transiting the Madura Strait. Soerabaja has capacity 20,000 tons and is a prime target so the Empire now knows the ARD's are on the move and will surely hunt them with subs.

• An Imperial surface force is 2 hexes NE of Ambon and was attacked from the air several times without effect.

China
• 4 Imperial units are moving on Pingsiang. The terrain is not favorable and we do not have enough to hold that spot anyway so we shall have to start yielding the Changsha area. Keeping heavy equipment will be critical to defending in favorable terrain; keeping heavy equipment means not allowing units to be destroyed or even retreated to the extent possible.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• With the fall of Mergui I presume there will be some movement on Moulmein.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• Smooth sailing.

KB2. Will KB2 continue into the Java Sea or is this (so far) tentative incursion to reduce the opposition invasions in the eastern DEI must face? The surface covering force in the eastern DEI can be seen in the lower right, heavy cruisers and destroyers.

Overall
• Action in the DEI as the Empire sends in surface combat groups.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• A PC will escort 11 tankers from San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles. Merchants are still making their way to Eureka for escort to San Francisco.

Pacific
• That group of tankers will arrive at Pago Pago tomorrow and set up a refueling farm.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Our submarines will get their shots at IJN fleet carriers beginning tomorrow.

Philippines
• Now 2 Imperial units at Cagayan. No idea when the first assault will come. Our units have no artillery.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• Japanese warships in the Indian Ocean! 3x destroyers raided our ASW barrier around the Sunda Strait and continued into the Indian Ocean. Even though weather today was predicted clear they are hiding under extreme overcast.

The much more valuable KV's are still in the Java Sea headed for the Madura Strait. Boise and Co. will operate from there to Tjilatjap to hunt the IJN DD's.

• The IJN CA surface force is heading west and passed Kendari, now 2 hexes WSW of there. The RN surface forces are divided into three TF (each with DD's): 2x CA; 4x CL with lighter 6 inch guns; 3x CL with heavier 6 inch guns (one CL has a mixture). The CL almost all have torpedoes. We will sortie all three TF and stand a chance of doing serious harm to some IJN heavies and lights.

• Contact lost with KB2. Perhaps they moved back to dodge subs or maybe they are hidden under weather.

• A little something to slow down pursuit of our ARD's.

• An xAKL was sunk by an IJN sub in the Makassar Strait.

• The invasion of Mersing, long foretold by SigInt, finally took place.

China
• More armour has been brought to bear against us at the front door to Sian. The road to Ankang is also being probed, possibly by armour but they are still across the river from our first line.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• Enemy LCU 2 hexes from Moulmein.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• One of our subs was probably briefly seen by enemy forces.

Well, he did say "get their shots" not "hit something" so the thinking wasn't too positive.

Overall
• Bought out a USA Inf Rgt. Perhaps for Noumea?

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Gathering ships for a troop convoy in the next week or so. More units to Pago Pago, some to Fiji, and maybe that Rgt to Noumea.

Pacific
• Fuel arrives at Pago Pago.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• A Zero fighter sweep over Port Moresby found empty skies.

Philippines
• There are now 3 enemy units at Cagayan so I expect the first assault tomorrow.

• I just noticed this so it might have pulled in a few days earlier, but there is now a division at Clark Field.

A report I distrust is one of the DD's which hit a mine sunk. The upper TF is one ship, the lower TF is two ships. The Dutch squadron is right behind them and the channel they are heading for was just mined.
