May 7th, 1942

Allies strike Kuching with waves of bombers and finally a Lightning Sweep. Zeroes at 40% and Oscars at 50% did well but really wore themselves out in a very long first engagement. A third wave of heavies came in (7 planes) unopposed and did a fair bit of damage. First appearance of the Lightning in an offensive role for quite a while.

I have been thinking on how to counter Allied bombers, and in past games used NF set to an altitude lower than the bombers. This seemed to yield much better results than flying say 2-3K above the bombers.

The first fight had a long initial encounter but with few enemy planes destroyed according to the animation, but the bombers were caught after making their runs and that seemed to be where most were destroyed. The Wellingtons should be noted are pretty darn slow.

3 Zeroes and 0 Oscars lost for 17 Wellingtons, 3 Beasts (2 D's & 1 E) and 2 Mitchells.

AFBs will tell me the Wellington Ic are junk, but they have good range, durability, and decent payload. Sure they don't compare to top tier Allied bombers, but used correctly they are very good I think. I wish Japan had something equivalent.

These Dutch planes have sank more shipping, used this way, for whatever reason I cannot get my fighters into them flying LRCAP at very low altitudes. Well, I can think of some of the reasons: distance, no radar, etc.

I was shocked to see these two little destroyers make it this far, as they were at Cam Ranh Bay yesterday unloaded, and they really steamed hard and furious only to sink.

Understanding Fast Transport mechanics is surely an art.

Those will be AFBs who cannot win unless everything is stacked heavily in their favour.

There is nothing wrong with the Wellingtons. They are best used as night bombers which of course is what they were mainly used in the ETO until the British 4Es became available. Daylight operational usage where enemy fighters are present will see them perform like all other 2E bombers unless they are well escorted. Few AFBs are prepared to escort their bombers, preferring instead to use sweeps ineffectively.

No, 3K is normally the lowest I go. This time the ships moved too far and had no LRCAP. Sitting ducks.

Turn is finished and off to the Allies. I forgot to take a picture of the Singers area, but the Allies are pushing forward with troops, planes and ships. He is super aggressive....

The first 5 A6M3s roll off the production line.

Harbin continues to see action, bombed at night, and swept during the day. Japanese fighters rise into the sky to contest the Soviet sweeps, flying low and giving the Soviets the dive, they do exceedingly well even against the dreaded Mig 3. High defense pilots....

Japanese planes, some excellent Zeroes no less, catch some beasts unescorted, but fail to bring any of those bad boys to the ground in flames.

Allied counter attack above Singapore is quite dangerous.

I only wish I had destroyed a beast or two...but 4 Migs...well, that is saying something. Using them in a LRCAP mode was a mistake.

Plane upgrade and conversions working...

2nd unit converted to Nicks, only one more unit can convert without spending PP.

First unit converts to the A6M3.

We, fans, we did it. The hometown won the superbowl. Hard to describe how crazy Philly went, with parties, pre, during and post. A celebration I have never seen here before...and I am a long time resident.

I will catch up to the developments in the game with the next turn...Allies are still pounding me with shore bombardments around Singers, and with night bombing in Manchuko.

They are a major upgrade from the Blenheim bomber due to the eight 500 pound bombs they carry. You just can't use them vs major fighter resistance. Otherwise I am always pleased to get them.

Night bombing...a tactic the Allies have pursued from the start of the war.

Other than Frank and Sam, the night fighters get a fair bit of r&d: 2 on Irving, 3 on Nick, 3 on Frances. If I recall correctly, I want to accelerate Frances to at least 6/44, but will be very happy to have her earlier to replace the Irvings.

I have been super impressed with Nates ability as a Night Fighter. They never close, but show up and interfere with the bombing enough.

Allied fleet bombards every day. Under the protection of 230 fighters at Singers, and another 60 just to the north west.

A Dutch sub sinks a DMS, in among a 330 density minefield freshly laid. My bad for leaving the DMS all by her lonesome.

I know its not much use as Japan, but still

I am building up the runways and will hit them during the day. Allies have done a wonderful job of putting AA in strong enough concentrations to make night bombing very ineffective for Japan so far.

How are you fuel and oil levels without access to Sumatra? Balikpapan would seem vulnerable to either the 4e beasties or a BB TF.

I think I will be okay...

I do worry about the Yank Carriers showing up for a quick raid. Zeroes, Rufes and now Nicks are protecting the oil in the SRA and building numbers to hopefully take back the initiative.

My Betty/Nell force is strong in the area waiting for opportunities.

I spotted some dl on Balikpapen off and on, and I rotate a hundred fighters in there off and on on the hopes of catching a raid...but during the daytime the Allies have been resting their planes since I caught the British bombers and downed 3 beasts a while back.

Allies have done a masterful job of using their beasts in stretching my very thin fighter planes all over the map, but that is changing with my increased production recently.

18 waves of night bombers by the Allies across the Empire...

Lots of Allied sub attacks...but no damage done. The Allies get lots of intel from all these attacks, and only light damage inflicted on the Allied subs.

Lost a good chance at weakening the Soviet Navy...

3.5 million fuel; 2.0 million oil.

I think this is sufficient to see 1945, which I doubt I will see in any case...as I suspect to not even make 1944 with Obvert's focus on Japan's economy and large American air bases in Manchuko.

I actually could run out of resources though...depending upon how aggressive the Allies are at attacking them.

Japan won't see the tide of the air war turn till August really, but then it should turn for quite a while with very early Sam/Jack/Franks. And it really won't turn all that much as the Allies will use more night bombing...

I always thought AFBs horribly misuse their bombers in most games, and this game will be a testimony to much better use. Of course the huge Soviet drain is the telling factor.

Lots of night bombing, all over Manchuko and some in the SRA and Magwe.

Yanks fly P40 into Luzon and down 20 bombers, 5 betties lost searching over Singers...

Soviets moving south, but he has run into a little stronger defense than I think he anticipated. I think I can get an attack in before the Soviets reinforce....
