I think another 50 yards into the jungle from the tank is some aircraft wreckage.

don't know if this is a crash or more likely a dump. Someone should know what this cowling belonged to.

edit: I wonder if this is from a TBF or a TBM-1C?

A longer ride to the Southern part of the Island near the Ngerewal Picnic Area. The small bay to the right is called Scarlet Beach. Here we find what is called a German style bunker.

You can see the hardware that held the steel door that they could move and cover the port..

The jungle growth and the bunker's size prevented seeing all of it from the outside.

Good guess though it will be a bit hard to pick the manufacturer Grumman (TBF-1C) or General Motors (TBM-1C) from this photo as they were practically identical. It definitely isn't a TBM-3 with double cowl intakes.

Thank you so much for these pics. When I have visited battlefields, like Gettysburg and Antietam, I am always humbled and moved by the fact that so many people gave their lives in this place where I am now walking. There is a sense in the air that you can feel but not describe. I get something of the same sense by looking at these pictures and recalling what I have read of this battle. So, thank you again for sharing.

I couldn't of said it better. I guess that is the feeling I had. Same feeling when I visited Guadalcanal and Normandy.
