I've started a grand campaign as the Germans. I am going to try to keep up an AAR.

The last time I played as the germans was 2 years ago vs the AI.

The first turn was somewhat botched by me. I missed 2 hexes for closing the Lvov pocket.
Turn 2 fixed that, no units really got away.

Now I have finished turn 3.
Globally, I have forsaken a thrust in the center, instead focusing on the flanks and weak spots. I am developing 2 main thrusts. One between Moscow and Leningrad and the other one south of Kiev.

I got a flimsy bridgehead over the Dnepr southeast of Cherkassy with an armored division, after a deep armoured thrust.

The 6 encircled divisions have done a HQ Buildup. The 2 divisions just east of that have decent MP left. So the next turn somehow, somewhere I hope to be over the Dnepr en masse with Panzergruppe 1 threatening Kharkov. Barring any disasters, it might work.

In the Welikije Luki area I got 2 bridgeheads, with most armour of 4. and 3. Panzergruppen over the rivers.(4. Pzgr over the Lowatj, 3.Pzgr over the Zapadnaja Dvina.)

The primitive arrow like structures, indicate not so much the intention of encircling, but more getting mobile troops in a good position to strike at leisure in any direction. If only my opponent just stays where he is.

What was your HQ buildup cost if I may ask for those 6 units in two different HQ's? ~50-70???

That's about right. I share the '???' sentiment.

It is not really the biggest problem (corrected some flawed grammar), I have forgotten how important a very good planning is as the germans, GHC cannot afford any mistakes, and I already made a couple, including 2 critical ones.

Nevertheless, I am really happy to finally be playing against a living opponent. Much much different then playing vs the AI of course.

Just finised turn 4, forgot screenshots.

Of course my opponent threw my lone Pz Division back across the Dnepr. I made a new bridgehead, as my infantry has not yet catched up, I had to deliberate attack a good defense with the present armour. I ended up getting 2 motorised divisions across the river this time. Who knows, they still might be there next turn, although I fear the worst. They are in the midst of a sea on brown counters. :-)

The area west of welikije luki, that was threatened with encirclement, was of course ably evacuated by my opponent. Just moved my units forward, cleared the final units from the Lvov pocket. Encircled some more (too few!) units. All in all I feel that I am, not surprisingly, behind the curve.

I did focus my attacks on his Recon in turn 1. I got 250 strategic recon up until now. I think out of a total of 700+ strategic recon planes. I wonder if that is a good result or not, does it make any difference specifically targeting his recon?

A bit too sad, but the new dnepr bridgehead, with a very decent def value, was kicked back by a dubious attack to say the least. I remember loki100's difficutlies once. Ok. If that's the way it is. I concede

Cryptic? In the words of Roy Walker: "say what you see!"

It's a server game isn't it?

Are you playing with Soviet +1 bonus? If you combine that with a good soviet leader and with very large amounts of Soviet troops you can get results that initially appear 'dubious'. My understanding is that if the Soviet player can get 100k+ troops committed against a single hex in the early game they can sometimes get retreat results even when the initial unmodified CV suggests otherwise

It is a server game.
Please ask the support about reload. I didn't.
I had two armies involved. 6th army under Vatutin und 12th army had a good leader to. We play with +1 soviet attack. Initially I had more than he an win.
Had bad luck that no reserves were committed.
Wietersheim has (4/5/6 and 6/5).
Means Moral is only 4 and mech/inf is 6/5. It is not that good.
Vatutin has (7/7/7 and 6/7).
So he had better chances in the moral dice and he leads mostly infantery and had a better skill in infantery which will helped him more than the 6 for Wietersheim mech skill. There is no surprise in the outcome of this battle.

That is no suspicious attack at all, it would have even worked without +1.
In addition to VigaBrands points, your units were probably low on supplies and fatigued, his ones rested with full ammunition.

Soviets can stack good leaders very quickly in the 41. The Germans have to walk a tight rope of AP's to get good Gernerals in key places keeping points for HQ BU's. HQ buildups now are extremely expensive so back to following rail lines more closely for myself. I see nothing adverse about what happened and what Ewaldvon Kleist post above is VERY true. Personally, I don't rush to get over the river because supply situation in the south isnt that great and the added penalty is even worse now in current patch.
