INVADED

Amphibious TF 12 offshore of Milne Bay
Clark Field, Cagayan, Pontianak, Singapore, CHangsha are also invested.

Overall
• It remains to be seen if we get enough ground combat power into Port Moresby quickly enough to prevent it being overwhelmed. Imperial troop ships are in the Coral Sea, probably bound for Terapo.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Took long enough!

• The convoy continues to be free of contacts (no DL). APD's that just brought BB's to San Francisco will head on an intercept course to join escort.

• BB's Maryland and Pennsylvania are in the shipyard at San Francisco for extensive repairs and scheduled upgrades.

Pacific
• Yorktown is moving a little faster than anticipated and is now 2 hexes past Malden Island.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• The position of KB1 is uncertain and likely accounted for a Catalina I lost today. Our subs in the Solomon Sea saw a lot of action.

• There is a convoy 2 hexes past Port Moresby - heading either for Terapo or Horn Island (less likely). We have flown in most of a squadron (10 of 12 planes were ready) of Vildebeest's to PM and set them and the fighters to 3 hexes range. If the convoy goes to Terapo we might get a good shot in.

• There is a cruiser TF (CA Kako encountered above) heading into the Coral Sea. Our supply convoy almost completely unloaded but will surely get destroyed tomorrow. So the Am and empty xAK have disbanded into the anchorage where they will be joined tonight by the xAKL when it finishes throwing cargo off the desk. The three large subs all unloaded and are heading back to Townsville for another load.

• The 223 Group RAF air HQ and the 1st Port Maint Eng Bn are fully airlifted in to PM (1 day ago). Beginning tomorrow the DelMonte Base Force will be airlifted in (with 4x PBY-4 squadrons flying that should take 1 or 2 days).

• Even though KB1 is known to be in or near the Solomon Sea there were "Heavy Volume of Radio transmissions" at Truk, so I presume more invasion operations for this area are getting underway.

Philippines
• Modest but good results for the enemy.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• Lots of air strikes against Imperial convoys in eastern DEI waters but no hits were had.

China
• 4 Imperial units at Changsha with two more seen on the way. Our troops did withdraw successfully into Hengyang. We should have some delay time here while other units get to other defensive positions.

• Units have been ordered to eventually get behind those Imperials heading west off the Ankang road. As other undead arrive they will be detailed to other areas.

• Beginning to garrison the road from Paoshan into Burma in anticipation of the Allies being driven out of Burma.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• The 143rd Infantry Regiment is the Imperial unit trying to cut the road behind Pegu.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• ...

1942 January 19

IJN activity around the Solomon Sea. The convoy heading for Terapo scouts as 8 ships, 3x CM, 1x xAK. Near Fergusson island 4 ships, 2x CL, 2x CA, moving west. Near Gasmata a convoy heading east. Near Cape Gloucester a convoy heading northeast. A convoy at Dagua.

KB1 is either in the Solomon Sea of just outside it near Green Island.

Hey zuluhour, do you by any chance have the text you can post (either insert or as a file doesn't matter)? If not the way you posted it is still great!

Overall
• KB1 is in the Coral Sea.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• The IJN subs are still present but far toward the coast from our precious convoy. A sub near San Francisco has a search aircraft operating.

Pacific
• 3 days for Yorktown to reach Pago Pago.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Our plans went awry. Not to worry, a team of navigators is looking for awry so we can locate our plans there.

Despite having two Catalina I groups searching over Terapo we do not have contact with the convoy there. Worse, as fate would have it KB1 passed through the Jomard Passage and is 3 hexes from Port Moresby, the same distance from Port Moresby to Terapo and corresponding to the maximum range orders given the Vildebeest group. Likely land based Zero's swept before other air action.

KB1's passage was not quiet.

Philippines
• Another enemy unit headed for Cagayan.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• Again several air strikes on enemy convoys in the eastern DEI but no hits. No additional activity in the western DEI.

• The last Dutch warship, Sumatra, has arrived. With 20 sys damage it would take 17 days in shipyard for repairs so instead she joins the Dutch squadron and will sail for Melbourne. That leaves the British with combatants larger than PT boats in the DEI.

China
• An attack on Door #2 to Sian.

Have the replay but not the turn (transmission error! ).

IJA 4th Division is ashore at Port Moresby, which was also battered by a very effective CA bombardment. 13 Airbase Supply hits - how do cruisers even do that?!

At least the B-17D's with recent Philippines and DEI experience are ready to go but the B-17E's are still learning how to hit the runway. Maybe we'll have time to get the surviving P-40E's out?

Note that we have NO scouting on the LCU present at Port Moresby. The companies present have been combined into the NG Rifles Bn. Only 1x P-40E was left operational after the bombardment, sweeps, and raids and it has flown to Australia. There are 8 more to try and salvage. Our xAKl and AM in the anchorage were ignored in today's battles but their fate is pretty certain.

The B-17D's at Charter Towers (safe from Naval bombardment at least) will fly against the invaders at 5,000 ft tomorrow. The B-17E's will be brought up to the degree air support makes practical. Three USA Base Force units are 3 days out from Melbourne where they will entrain for points north.

Will the Empire attack tomorrow or will more of the division land before sending Orcs into the town?

We just got radar in place, too!
"Del Monte AAF Base Force - some devices have been upgraded at Port Moresby"

• Boise is at Sydney for minor repairs. The old DD's with her are converting to APD. At some point soon Boise and Marblehead will join up with the Allied cruisers at Brisbane.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• The Zero's are spoiling our air strikes on shipping in the eastern DEI. No further activity in the western DEI.

Both of the units destroyed were moving on the IJA 143rd Infantry Regiment which is trying to cut the road north of Pegu. There aim was to arrive and attack to spoil the regiment's movement.

• Pegu is being abandoned. The minimum (garrison requirement) forces left at Rangoon might do the same as I doubt they can damage industry to any material degree.

• CA Dorsetshire arrived at Cape Town, heading for Colombo.

1942 January 21

Our aerial warriors will try to aid our forces on the ground at Port Moresby. I assume that the Base Administration display will update at the beginning of the turn.

INVADED
Amphibious TF 361 unloading at Port Moresby
Clark Field, Cagayan, Pontianak, Singapore, Changsha are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Abemama is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Sarmi !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Terapo !!!

Overall
• It's pretty obvious that reinforcements will not reach Port Moresby in time, so what to do with that USA infantry regiment allocated for PM? Noumea/New Caledonia would probably just be a place to see it destroyed alone. I'm thinking Fiji to reinforce the New Zealand forces at Suva, and the USA tank Bn allocated for Fiji.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• IJN subs are feisty about attacking our destroyers.

Pacific
• Lots of ships moving.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• No ground assault on Port Moresby but continued landings, air raids, and naval bombardments. Our own air support efforts cost us 5x B-17's.

Real nice "hold" at Singers! I am still working with my machine in regards to posting
and pulling stuff off sticky notes and placing in word docs. I am posting from either
my MAC or an off site machine still.

You can send the pilots to the reserves, saving what little experience and training that they have.

• Aside from air strikes and cleanup attacks there were several Imperial bombardments. Our troops are gaining experience from those, hopefully with the benefit exceeding the attrition.

Thanks.

I just go with plain text files for those things. At any rate I have read through it, I was just thinking searching through it over the course of time would be easier in a text file. Soon I'll be getting more undead units and I plan to send them south to crawl around the Imperial LOCS.

Still mulling what to do with the troops that would have gone to PM. Samoa is another possibility.

I might do that but first I want to see the first assault. Only one more made it out this past turn as the naval bombardment and air strikes churned up things.

• Our two little ships each ran into KB1 and got a good look at it, but each then ran into cruisers intent on cutting off their radio transmissions.

Hrm, so much for trying to defend port Moresby. Ah well, got to draw the line somewhere else

Btw, it's always hilarious when that happens against a small ship like that

Both Task Forces evade combat

KB + escort is really afraid of AM Whyalla!

Yeah, but KB is a carrier TF and even stray 3 or 4 inch shells can destroy planes on a flight deck. Bug out and let the SCTF's deal with it!

There are lots of places like PM for the Allies in the early game. If Japan chooses to grab them early enough there is no way the Allied player can hold them. If the Japan player does not grab such a base early the Allied player can defend if the Japan player does not allocate sufficient power, and that equation changes as time goes on. I was hoping Japan's decision to grab Port Moresby would be just late enough to allow me to set up a stout defense and make it costly to grab.

Heck, except for the Philippines squadrons the B-17 pilots aren't even trained up yet. The problem I have with Pago Pago and Fiji is air power. At the moment they have to be defended by the USN carriers and those have upgrades coming in March and April.

Noumea has nothing and will probably be grabbed. Fiji might be a target, might not. If it is I have a decent shot at defending it. Air units for SoPac/PacAO (outside Hawaii) are just trickling in, but Australia has plenty and there are more SWPac air groups is the US that could be borrowed.

Overall
• The Empire makes progress in two additional theaters today, smashing into Pegu and capturing Clark Field.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• The convoy has been rerouted to a more direct course to Pago Pago and also has 4x APD's merged in for added ASW support.

• A sub sank a merchant on the way to supply Kodiak. Replacement with escort sent. Subs still off the West Coast, but not seen for a while near Hawaii.

• Warspite, Colorado and several APD's have arrived at Pearl Harbor after dropping off USMC paratroopers at Midway Island.

Pacific
• Quiet. Too quiet.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• The survivors at Kokoda were treated to a massive carrier raid today. With luck KB1 will stay there day after day repeating that. Imperial forces are moving out of Buna toward Kokoda and Dobadura.

Philippines
• Clark Field did not hold as long as hoped.

INVADED
Cagayan, Pontianak, Singapore, Changsha are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Nadzab is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Tabar Island !!!

Overall
• KB1 stays put, KB2 is not seen.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Daily sub battles.

Pacific
• No enemy activity lately.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• KB1 is still off of Port Moresby and made another large strike on Kokoda. There are now 2 units at PM with fighters at the airfield so we can assume a base forcehas unloaded.

• Still a sub parked near Brisbane.

• 5th Base Eng Group (rebuilt) has been airlifted to Cairns and will begin taking replacements and upgrading to radar.

Philippines
• No change here. Still one more unit moving on Cagayan (but cross-country not on a road); waiting for the siege of Bataan.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• Singapore is 2 + 49% fortifications.

• Tarakan held for a day.
quote:

Defending units:

Tarakan MLD Base Force

• The same dance with Zero's as we attempt air strikes on shipping.

China
• Painful Zero's sweeps against an AVG squadron.

• Imperial units trying to flank us at Hengyang

• Near Ankang that appears to be 1 unit moved west off the road now heading north. 4 units remain across the river.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• The full division is heading into Rangoon while the regiment is now on the road to Toungoo. Movement direction not noted but toward Toungoo would make sense.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• Poistive waves.

1942 January 26

INVADED
Amphibious TF 88 offshore of Goodenough Island
Amphibious TF 109 offshore of Guiuan
Amphibious TF 298 offshore of Lihir
Bataan, Cagayan, Pontianak, Singapore, Changsha are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Feni Islands is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Tarakan !!!

Overall
• KB1 vanished. Reasonable possibilities for KB1's current movement:
- Attack warships in the DEI.
- Replenish.
- Head south/southeast to rendezvous with New Caledonia, or New Hebrides, or Santa Cruz Islands invasion forces.
- Rendezvous with southern Solomon Islands invasion forces.
- Of course anything else is possible if the Empire decides to make a deep invasion to force the USN into an early battle.

• Possible sighting of KB2/KB3 just east of Hong Kong. One TF is 6 ships, PG, 2x CVL, 3x CV, 6x fighters, 16x bombers, 6x auxiliary; the other TF is 5 ships, 1x DD, 2x CVE, 1x BB, 1x CV, 9x fighters, 15x bombers.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Three subs/sub TF's close off San Francisco. They are using search planes. With escorts scarce our xAK's are making their way up the coast from San Diego without any escort. That route takes them by the subs' known patrol zones but enemy scouting aircraft could spoil this for us. Ten of the fighter squadrons at San Francisco in training have been switched to 50% training/50% CAP with range 3. Let's see if wandering into dozens of fighters at a time reduces aerial sightings of our ships.

• Sub activity near San Diego.

Pacific
• An snemy sub parked off Suva.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• No carrier raid on our troops and no sign at all of KB1. No search planes shot down and it is impossible for KB to have moved beyond coverage in one go, so they must be shielded under overcast. The problem this raises is KB1 might well be anywhere within our search coverage. The RN CL TF at Darwin will stand well to the west. All of ships at Darwin have been formed into a TF and will make for Carnavon.

• We have two AVD just refueled at Pago Pago heading to their assigned station at Reef Islands to support a PBY squadron. It is now a little dicey if we will have any information on KB1's whereabouts when they arrive there. Instead I will send them to separate islands arriving on separate days. The PBY squadron will be divided with 1/3 at each island.
- The 1st base is Funafuti where an AVD is already anchored. The 1/3 PBY Sqn is transferring there now.
- The second base will be Aoba and will provide some Intel about the safety of sailing to Reef Islands.
- Reef Islands will be the 3rd base.

Philippines
• One enemy unit now at Bataan and more on the way.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• Lost a tanker to a sub off Tjilatjap so no more fuel will be siphoned out of Java.

• Tarakan fell.

• A surprise crossing just west of Hengyang.

Defending units:

We are sending reinforcements to hold this hex for a while. Not sure of the full power that might be coming.

• A strong unit that was to rail to Kweilin from Hengyang can no longer do so. Kweilin will be invested shortly and has modest defense.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• The IJA Rgt is indeed moving on Toungoo while the IJA Div moves on Rangoon.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• Tomorrow our subs will begin arriving back on station.

Complete combat report attached.

Darwin may well be untenable for any naval assets, either now or in the very near future.
