Just an update on life and WitpAE.

I had a chance to talk with Erik recently and wish we had done so years ago. We discussed the game briefly, but didn't go into any great detail about our matchup. It was nice to discuss a few things including what I had intended to have done, had we continued our game. We also talked a little about models. I have a number of kits I'm hoping he'll take off my hands . I think we talked for roughly 30-45 minutes in total. We hope to have a chance to have another conversation soon. I enjoyed our conversation and it only reinforced how I feel about Erik.

I understand Dan's none to happy with my ship naming, so it gave me a chance to explain to Erik my theme of action heros and the inspiration for CV Death From Above . Sorry Dan, I take no responsibility for Emperor Norton though, that was pure Torsten. I had fun with the naming so Dan will just have to deal.

Erik suggested I post some more personal information and I've been hesitant to do so. In the end I decided to as I've talked with a number of people on the forum for years, had a chance to meet one in person and consider the community one of the best there is online. I consider some people here my friends. Well enough pre-amble...here goes nothing...

Some of you know from previous posts in my AAR how stressful things have been for me personally, it turns out I've another problem to deal with. Long story short, I've been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and the prognosis is not good. I'm only 49, but the tumour is in the worst possible location and that currently makes me inoperable. I've undergone one biopsy so far to determine the pathology and treatment options, but sadly the first results indicate they did not get good samples and I will have to repeat the biopsy. I'm still waiting for news on when the second biopsy will happen. My treatment options totally depend on the pathology. The current hope is that once I begin treatment, chemo or radiation will reduce the tumour and allow surgery to be undertaken. If I don't respond to treatment and surgery is not an option, the news is dire. I will have no idea on the amount of time I have left, if that is the case. Needless to say I'm scared and being realistic I need to get my affairs in order. I hope that those of you I have talked with/met, played against and consider friends will reach out and say hello. It would be nice to talk again. I value your friendship, support and a chance for distraction from the life changing event I'm going through. Feel free to PM and we can discuss catching up somehow.

I feel awkward writing this, but then again what do I have to lose by reaching out .

It's ok to be scared. Just don't be TOO scared. I went through non-hodgkins 2 decades ago. Through the grace of God, and with blind luck and some really good friends (I married one of them ) I'm still here. There have been HUGE advancements in treatments in the last decade. It is not just a platitude to say positive mental attitude is a large part of the fight. Stay strong, stay determined, stay brave, and kick that sucker. Let me know if I can help, your only 20 hours away

It was really good to catch up and have a real chat. Joe and I have always gotten along on the forum and it just confirmed that. Long overdue, and just sorry it has to be due to this news.

I hope to talk soon again and in the meantime, as Levicus says above, stay as positive as you can and live every day!

Awful news.

Goes without saying that I hope the biopsy results are more positive and there is something that they can do.

Oh Joseph,

Such bad news. I'm so sorry to hear it. I truly hope the prognosis isn't as dire as the diagnosis-as Pancreatic cancer is amongst the worst of the lousy bunch. With all my heart, I hope you beat this thing.

I'm too sad right now, but will PM you later. I'd like to exchange phone numbers again too, if you're up to a call.

Please keep us updated.

Thank you all for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. I can't express how much they mean to me right now.

It's Sunday night as I write this and I expect to hear word any day on when the next Endoscopy is booked. I had some blood work done last Friday to check for cancer markers, but don't know any results as yet.

I had some long time friends drop by today. We grew up together on the same block and have known each other for 40+ years. We actually played a game of Risk while we chatted, just like old times.

I'll try to update when I can. I think once the biopsy is done and treatment options are discussed it will be busy times ahead as I take this head on. My spirits are high, but I am so tired from the lack of sleep. I hope once things get moving we can reassess my pain management during treatment to allow me to finally get some sleep. I'm just exhausted getting only an hour or two daily.

Thank you all again. The best online community and some of the nicest people out there.

Joseph

Just returned from vacation to discover this terrible news.
Cancer is an insidious beast that robbed me of my brother at the age of 51.
You're nearly the same age as he and far too young to be having to deal with this monster.
I'll keep you in my prayers Joseph.

My support, prayer and best wishes to you Joseph in these challenging times.

Anyone heard from Joseph?

I emailed him yesterday, and haven't heard back. I don't want to impose on his privacy but want him to know he's in our thoughts.

Hopefully Joseph won't mind this update. I think not.

I called and spoke with Joseph in mid-late February. He sounded upbeat and determined. He still didn't know the extent of the issue or opportunities for interventional strategies. More tests would be conducted over the next short bit and he would know more soon.

He did let me know that he proposed to and planned to marry his long-term girlfriend. They had a small private ceremony scheduled for late February or early March. I congratulated him on this good news.

I called him last week. There was no answer on his cell phone (no voicemail picked up either). I tried his home number and that went to a voicemail. The voicemail was a woman's voice and indicated that you'd reached the number of "Joseph and [woman's name], please leave a message".

I surmise that Joseph was married since we last spoke. Very happy for his new relationship.

I don't know about his health status right now, but hope for some good news.

Joseph indicated an aggressive cancer so that would take months of debilitating chemotherapy and radiation therapy to try and fight it. All we can do is hope that it is successful.
Hang in there Joseph - this is one situation where being a stubborn SOB is a good thing!

Glad to hear this. I'd spoken to him as well, and he had a great attitude, and wanted to make the most of this period of time with partner, friends and family. I hope he's out doing just that!!

I had the pleasure of speaking at length with Joseph this evening. I won't steal his thunder-I know he intends to post here soon. But he's doing as well as can be expected, considering the circumstances. Really good to hear his voice and know that he's doing OK.

Hi Everyone. I'm still among the living. I apologize for not popping in sooner, but the days fly by. I see Andre has provided a quick update.

I plan on updating in a few days, but generally have been having a tough go at things of late.

To those that have contacted my privately, I am so sorry for not responding sooner. Just so much going on and some days just get away from me and the next thing I know a week has been by.

Back soon.

Joseph

Thanks everyone for the continuing support and well wishes.

I'm currently on a break from chemo which has allowed me to enjoy a lovely summer and another opportunity for a trip out to Vancouver and Victoria.

I've been working on models, reading, visiting with friends and relatives and generally just trying to enjoy life these days.

I hadn't mentioned it before, but I'm also playing AE. Chickenboy and myself have resumed our PBEM from some time ago that went by the wayside. I'm enjoying having the time to crank out a turn here and there and see how far we can get our game to. We are currently in January of 1943.

I'm also currently working on a Japanese fighter model for Andre (Chickenboy) as well. A Ki-100. It's coming along, albeit slowly with so many other model projects on the go.

I have an appointment for another CT Scan in mid-August to check on the size of the tumor. I will make a decision as to further treatment at that time, but to be honest I am dreading going back on chemo. My quality of life takes a drastic turn for the worse from the effects. I have an important decision to make moving forward. It's not about how long I can live for, it all about the quality of my life on the time that I do have.

I hope everyone is also enjoying life these days and the forum continues to be a busy place. The number of AAR's to follow is really something after all this time. Take care and I'll check in again another time.

Joseph
