ORIGINAL: aaatoysandmore I've played so many mods of Mount and Blade I don't think I can start another one. The combat is still the same no matter how many ways you make the strategic map or equipment. Press 0 f1/f1 wait wait; press 0 f1 f3; battle over in a few seconds. lol Sometimes I'd hold the archers from firing till we saw the whites of their eyes. Sometimes I'd have the cavalry follow me into their rear to take out their archers and slingers. It was a massacre and it was the same every stinkin battle even the big ones. I gave a try to Viking Conquest. I found combat little confusing and I just couldn't adapt to controls. As I recall it, attack is made by moving a mouse and pressing a button at the same time. Is there an easier way for it, with or without game pad? Also does player character need to be optimized for combat and take part on it, or can character be specialized for command and hang in the rear line among with slingers and archers? You can just command with the number keys assigned to different units like 1 is infantry, 2 is archers and 3 is cavalry and 4-9 are other types of units you don't want to run into battle. As far as playing you use the w,s,a,d keys to move and just the left mouse button to swing at the proper time. It does take some practice but it's pretty easy to get used to. The right mouse button is for blocking and used mostly when the are firing arrows at you or close melee. The funtion keys are what you control you troops with as you press 1 to get your infantry and then press f1/f1 to tell them to hold position. There are other commands like 1 f1/f3 to charge the enemy. There's a bunch more but these are the ones I use most often. There's types of stances like shield wall which you press 1 f4/f5 or any number that you have troops in for that matter like 2 for archers and you don't want them to fire you press 2 f3/f1 and when you want them to fire you press 2 f3/f2 and so on and so forth. There's a bunch of commands but eventually you'll find just a few you like the best and they work for you most often. Like I like to take my cavalry (3 hotkey) around the sides with me to the back and then press 3 f1/f3,but, to get the cavlary to follow me I press 3 f1/f2. Once you memorize the commands it's very easy and once you get 90 nobles(infantry elite) it's easier than christmas pie. My number 4 hotkey is heroes only, number 5 is warriors only and number 6 is spearmen only, 9 is priests and aux units in training which I leave till last as they are reserve reserve units I don't want to lose if I can keep from it. Most battles save for the big big ones my frontline of noble infantry just destroys everything, when they enemy turns and starts running I send in the cavalry. I only send in warriors and spearmen if it's a very large battle and then mostly from the sides or rear.
