Japan's advantage in night surface combat is going away due to all those bombardment runs. There cannot be too many repair shipyards safe from 4e bombers right now.

I have I think hit once with a Long Lance torpedo the entire game. I have lost every battle, even when I significantly outnumbered the Allies or Soviets.

I recall discussions about the 'recalabrated' torpedos in this mod.
They didn't like the term 'nerfed'.

May 25 1942

Night bombing continues at a torrid pace with 2E bombers from SRA to Manchuko.

Goodbye Ise and another cruiser.

This is getting ugly. Maybe it shows just how fragile the Japanese war machine really was: if anything serious went wrong, recovery was extremely difficult or even impossible.

The battles at sea are really hurting Japan right now. The Allied war economy is still in 1st gear and hasn't truly been felt yet.

I do agree that Japan was more fragile in '42 than many players think.

I'm guessing that he doesn't care if he loses most, if not all of the RN at this point - since it will be the US production which will carry the weight down the road.

With Japan's fragile economy & no space to trade for time, this is going to be really, really ugly - but incredibly fun at the same time (to watch, at least).

You are just figuring out this now? I forgot to mention my 1-5 result on Mindanao.

I think he was willing to lose all at start forces, air, land and naval. It is scenario one so the risk of auto victory is remote.

Everything is hurting Japan right now. Plus, I am likely throwing more ships away tomorrow.

I think in future games I will grow this repair yard to 50, and use it for all ship conversions to AV and AR, so that the larger dockyards can concentrate upon ship repairs.

Why?

Once you start the upgrade, move the ship to Pier Side - where it won't really be soaking up any repair points.

I do move them to pierside, low, which in theory means that are at the bottom of the cue.

However, I want to because of three things:

1. Centralization, and ease of finding said ships once under repair.

2. A port where I won't be tempted to use the ship while they await the activation date.

3. I think there is an impact on repairing minor damage even when set to low. It seems to me that ships undergoing conversions take system damage. At a large port, it seems that the system damage starts to repair when the number of days for the upgrade = system damage. I think when this starts that the ship does consume workers and does divert ship repair resources.

I want to see if I can accelerate this last bit of conversion, or prove this supposition.

But my main reasons are 1 and 2.

The amount of Sys damage is actually set in the scenario/upgrade data. You can see it when looking at the upgrade, either in-game or in Tracker.

Repairing it does consume some small amount of port resources, but I've yet to see one (that isn't a CVL or BB conversion) that is more than 21 Sys on a relatively easy to repair ship (the Yusen and Kyushu xAK to AK conversions, or the AV/AR conversions).

I don't think this shows that IJ is fragile in '42, rather it just confirms some rather obvious facts: the SOV forces being so close to the HI pose a huge risk. If IJ opens that front, it needs to be done with considerable planning. Lowpe did it completely accidently, and at the worse possible time. All his planning was focused west and south in the DEI and here he now has to deal with +8000AV in his back yard. Re-orienting his forces in time is impossible.

Having sandboxed this a number of times, even going for the Bear in 5/42 with PLANNING, it is a tough proposition. Its certainly possible against the AI, but I only have to help the AI (play head2head) a few turns and the outcome can quickly change. Particularly if the allied player is able to come hard at Burma/Thailand, he can force the IJ to decide between that area and possibly Singers or SOV. This was 1/42 ... krikey!

This ship was supposed to be docked, but for some reason wasn't. I wonder why? Light damage from the weak torpedo.

Night bombing continues apace here in Manchuko. Always a few bombs get thru.

Soviets looking for their next offensive?, but perhaps they have had to ship off several divisions to Moscow? Whatever happens I am pulling some troops out that are unrestricted from here or from China.
