Ostfront
It's awfully quiet on the Russians side. Just a couple of artillery and air skirmishes is all what happened.

Ostfront:

HrsGrpp nord: All armies gets resupplied, reinforced and rested. Some Art battles

HrsGrpp mitte: the same as nord but with some big airraids.

HrsGrpp Oekraine: The 7 PzArm keeps pushing east taking some strategic bunkers on the road to Kiev.

HrsGrpp sud: The 11 and 12 army move forward. It looks like the Russians have giving up Korovograd. Our troops move fast and are reaching the Dnieper river. These advances narrows the Russian supply line to Kiev to a few hex, that combined with mud got to hurt.

A new year, time for some statistics

Our forces and production is still growing but raw and oil needs our attention.

Sorry, had to reopen the turn for Commonwealth as the game crashed.
Not a bug, but my fault. Loaded a unit to transportships, decide to change the unit and unloaded, changed and loaded again, decided to change the transport fleet and unloaded, and when I wanted to load the unit again … game was blocked.
It proves: It is possible to confuse the engine so much that it surrenders!

@ICYM

I have a couple of questions

1) When a scientist is moved from an university to an synt oilplant, does he begins upgrading this synt oilplant. Or does this upgrade only happens when the science-card is played on the synt oilplant.

2) Production factories: in the table it says they are indestructible but in the text beside the table it says (I did see it to late) "they can be destroyed" and so it happened. Is this the way it has to be or is a bug and applies this only to factories build in the game or for all factories.

1. The correct way to do it is to move a scientist from a university. Once the scientist is on a synthetic oil plant (you only need to put one scientist on one German Syth. oil plant), at the start of each German turn there is a random chance the upgrade will occur. The upgrade will then be applied to all syth. oil plants, including the SS one.

2. The table is a little misleading. I think it refers to what happens if a location is destroyed. It says Indestructable in the "Loc. on destruct" row, which has a couple of settings in the editor that allow a destroyed location to display a different graphic. In this case it is the text is correct - factories can be destroyed. This applies to both original and newly-built factories. There are exceptions: Industrial centres, research centres, ore and oil mines, supply bases, synth oil, recruitment and enlistment centres and resource centres can't be destroyed.

(This info is correct for the latest version of the scenario and I think it should apply to the version you are playing as well.)

I have also sent a PM with additional information.

I will do this AAR from the soviet side because I think it complements Drommel's reports which I like and will be in a similar style.

First the front is organized as 5 big "fronts" + Finnish front rather than armies or army groups, I will refere to them by name since that's what I got used to, they are:

Finnish front (Northern most front)
Yeryomenko front
Timoshenko front
Yeremenko front
Ktrponos front
Tyulenev front (Southern most front)

First a little history: In general after the first few turns the lines remains largely static due methodical approach of the Germans and intensive fortification building by the Russians, but also including limited but unstoppable attacks by the Germans and also limited but aggressive attacks by us, with major exception of Tyulenev front in the south which had back-and-forth battles all game and was the most destructive for both sides. Red Airforce was weak but able to launch attacks strong enough to hurt the Germans advance.

june 41, Start of Barbarossa:
Losses are massive, and there is total panic on the front, infact all armies are crushed and the survivors helpless, except 5th Army's Armor formations and 18th army near Odessa which mostly survived. The few mobile units left are retreated into newly set defensive lines.

july 41:
More advancement for the Germans towards major cities of Minsk, Kiev and Kirovgorad in the south, our forces are very weak and mainly consist of raw recruits.

august 41:
Ktrponos front: fortified defensive lines begin to emerge all along the front, especially the Kiev defensive line which was completed before the Germans arrival by sheer luck (any weakness in that line would've led to encirclement and eventual destruction.)
Tyulenev front: The Germans cross the Bug river with a powerful bridgehead, and on the outskirts of Kirovgorad, we manage to cutoff and encircle this bridgehead, our first real victory in the war.

sep 41:
Our losses continue to be massive, averaging 1000+ infantry and corresponding number of artillery and tanks EVERY turn so far.

Yeryomenko front: the enemy crosses the river and holds a powerful bridgehead on the other side, we realize this and rush reserves to plug the line, but the acquired bridgehead will remain in enemy hands for many months to come.
Timoshenko front: we manage to evacuate all of the Minsk garrison by careful planning and a big fleet of trucks and use them as the core of a new defensive line.
Yeremenko front: due to a mistake on the very first turn this front didn't receive any production, this error will cost me dearly later as it turns out to be the main direction of attack of the Germans in this part of the front, for now this front retreats helplessly.

Oct 41:
Yeryomenko front: the enemy fortifies his bridgehead and we reinforce the opposite side of the bridgehead, situation is under control but just barely.
Timoshenko front: due to another error in planning, the Dneiper river which was supposed to be the main defensive line was left weak, allowing the germans crossing in mass and forces us to abandon it completely to avoid encirclement of Timoshenko front.
Yeremenko front: more retreats with no end in sight, spearhead is lead by strong SS units.
Ktrponos front: Powerful Kiev defensive line holds, allowing us to focus on more critical fornts.

Nov 41:
Siberian reinforcement arrives and help stabilize the situation in Yeremenko front which is desperate.
After defeats in Timoshenko front and Yeremenko front (both holding the middle section of the front) we are pushed back completely from the Dnieper river and construct a major new defensive line called the Stalin line, starting from Smolensk in the north (Timoshenko) and ending with the already existing Kiev fortification line which is makes the southern anchor of this line. Many women, children and babies died in the building of this line.
The Red airforce which was constant annoyance to the Germans is attacked in all its major basses and basically wiped out, from this point the Red airforce basically disappears from most of the front.

Dec 41:
Winter finally arrives, with mud in the south grounding all planes, this is a welcome news for Tyulenev front which has been in destructive battles so far, fighting bravely for Kirovgorad which changed sides 4 or 5 times and is now a burning rubble. Considering the Germans have been weared down, we decide to use this opportunity to retreat to a new defensive line or risk total destruction of the front.

Current turn, jan 42:

Most of the fronts are quiet, due to winter and Germans stopping the attack, exceptions are:

Ktrponos front: at the edge of Ktrponos and Yeremenko the enemy punches through and tries to encircle Kiev and the front protecting it, we push this attack back and take measures to secure Ktrponos.

Tyulenev front: The enemy wastes no time in reaching our new lines, again putting pressure on us to build a defensive line quickly or be overruin, otherwise no majorfights.

Finnish front: We've had success all along the finish front and including Karelia, finnish Northeren army is encircled and about to be destroyed, if this is successful, the northern half of Finland will be soviet. we also use the opportunity of the lakes freezing up to expand our attacks and push the enemy away from Leningrad.
On the sea front the Soviet Baltic fleet is caught in the open and destroyed by a huge German fleet. but we manage to take revenge: by combination of land artillery and air attack managed to cripple the enemy fleet, and 3 new battleships finished the turn before were used to finish the remnants, a deadly attack on the Kriegsmarine.

Red airforce makes a comeback, messy attack due to Finnish airforce giving cover but we reach through to the German fleet.

The killing blow:

Germany February 1942

A sad day for the Kriegsmarine. What was believed and announced to be a big victory for the Hochseeflotte, by sinking the initial Russian Baltic-fleet, turned out to be a Pyres victory and the destruction of most of the our surface fleet. Now as in the real war the U-Boots have to take the heavy task of the battle for the seas.

Ostfront
HrsGrpp Nord: Still wintertime but it's nearing the end so we prepare and reposition for the spring. A big air raid on an airbase to the north encounters new Russian Fighter III plains. We shot down many of them.

HrsGrpp Mitte: Here more of the same as HrsGrpp north but no air instead art battles.

HrsGrpp Oekraine: Our 7 PzArm managed again to breakthrough the Russian defends-line and tightening the ring around Kiev further. While the SS in heavy battles makes it way east and cuts the Russian defends-lines.

HrsGrpp Sud: Here the 12 Arm crosses the Dnieper river in force and closes the ring around Kiev for the second time. The 11 PzArm follows the 11 arm and takes on the defenders of the Dnieper river, expanding the bridgehead.

Sudfront: aiding our allies

Westfront: Heavy raids on Allied supply in the gulf of Biscay. The first air-raid on N-France by the Allies.

Nordfront: The battle of the Atlantic rages on. Big numbers of destroyers try to uphold a blockade. An attack of strategic bombers managed to destroy an factory in Norway (to my surprise it could be destroyed).

There are no date restrictions on when you can move a scientist onto a German Synth oil plant. If you receive a scientist early in the game, he can be used straight away. The chance of the oil upgrade happening in a given turn is about 10%, so you may have to wait a while for the upgrade to happen.

btw Drommel, in this turn I did some air attacks on your forces and not make it seem like Im just cheating, Im not sure why there was no interception, infact the last air attack I did I repeated 3 separate times with the same planes just to test it and your fighters never intercepted.. Im not sure why this happens or if Fighter III has something to do with it?

and just for the record I dont think my fighters ever intercepted anything either..

Hi Hatemf90, I'm just like you sometimes wondering why there is no intercepting. Even when readiness, supply, etc is high there is non. That's my question. So no cheating just wont to know why.

In this current turn it is I think doing to winter penalties that my airforce is doing anything.

Thanks, yea I agree, I only really did 2 ground attacks and a airsupply but all had no interceptions so I got worried then. sucks to have all that careful planning wasted for a game mechanic (for both sides), would be nice if the game could be modded for 100% interception, or atleast 80-90%.

The intercept chances have remained at the default game values. Currently they are 10% chance of failure at nearby hexes and 50% at the edge of the intercept range.

I will probably leave a small chance of not intercepting, but the 80-90% you suggested feels about right to me.

Thank you for drawing my attention to this somewhat frustrating aspect of the game.

Agree with you that the intercept chance is too low. It should not drop that much at the edge of the intercept range (even at default setting, so at any game at all). Therefore I use a lot of self propelling AA in my frontline units. Thanks, icym, for adding these SFTs to the scenario

Russia, Feb 42:

The Germans restart their offensive even before winter and mud season are over, but we expected this already.

Losses are high but not so 1 sided any more so we will take that.

Russia, Feb 42:

Yeryomenko front: Our new fighters IIIs are discovered and attacked, it looks like the entire Luftwaffe came down on 1 spot, we wonder how Germany can supply them all? Only the Flak network helps to balance the outcome a little.

Other than that we launch a limited attack on their fortified bridgehead, we could not dislodge them but cause heavy losses.

The Americans have entered the war and still have poor production...oh well...life is like that...of course this is the USA so production is still a lot...have filled out two armies (of about 15 divisions each) and started on the third...that will complete one Army Group...

1st Army Group:
1st Army has been deployed.
2nd Army is waiting for transportation to it's destination.
3rd Army is being formed.

2nd Army Group:
All HQ's being formed or filled out.

Research is proceeding apace and new technologies are being revealed every month...to American Generals ONLY so far.

Russia, Feb 42:

Yeremenko front:
The SS launch their long awaited attack, their attack is deadly, cutting my defensive line in half, but the attack is limited in scale, and we were able to encircle and destroy most of the attacking units, for now both sides are weakened.

Russia, Feb 42:

Ktrponos front: Total encirclement is now a reality, Ktrponos now has to fight on 2 fronts, a tough situation but not hopeless.

Tyulenev front: Situation here combined with Kiev's encirclement makes effectively the southern half of the front in critical situation. The mud season which we had depended on to slow down the Germans dried up in the worst possible places, to allow easy crossing in the direction of Kiev's rear. infact a whole army crossed the Dnieper and is now sitting behind Kiev. Even worse, the mud forms a barrier between the snow areas and the south, stopping any air cover from reaching Tyulenev, again mud working against us.

Germany march 42

The Russian winter has ended. The snow vanished and changed into mud, mud, mud everywhere. A life savvier for the Russian armies south of Kiev. Movement is very limited and all of my luftwaffe is grounded.
SS: They took a hugh risk but it put the attention on them and not on de 7 Arm who was encircling Kiev. Their sacrifice was not in vain. The positions of the 7 Arm were saved.

Ostfront:
HrsGrpp nord: MUD, so we have to stay put and can do only art bombardment.
HrsGrpp mitte: MUD and the same as HrsGrpp nord
HrsGrpp Oekraine: the 7 Arm can again drive a hol in the enemy line and so reach the 12 Arm of HrsGrpp sud.
The SS was on the offensive again but mud stopped a follow up also a number of bunkers got destroyed.
HrsGrpp sud: The 11 and 12 Arm cross the Dnieper river in force but here mud also hinders the total destruction of Russian units. Still my armies managed to expend the bridgehead and reach Kharkov.

Attacks on landed enemy units, they got destroyed.
Westfront:
Another air raid on N-France, further sea battles in the gulf of Biskay
Nordfront:
The battle of the Atlantic is intensifying. Large numbers of destroyers and subs or sighted even a carrier has joined the battles.
By cheer luck an Engineer unit discovered an invasion forces of the coast of Narvik. An air attack sunk it promptly.
