Dear all,

About signature of passive sonar, Command provides front, side, rear db data for each range as the following.

front side rear
Passive Sonar, VLF (0-1000 Hz, 200 Hz Center Frequency) 140db 141db 142db

Are the values (140db, 141db, 142db) maximum loudness at such as maximum speed?

I'd like to know conditions of the values.

Thanks in advance.

PS:
I'm thinking that such values will be lower relative to decrease of sub speed.

Great question. It would be nice to have dynamic information on platform noise that adjusts for speed, sea conditions, etc.

Yeah, it's not clear what the numbers refer to but I have always assumed that they refer to maximum values...also agree with Primarchx that some way to see what the in-game values are under various conditions would be instructive.

Would be great if a dev could tell us what the numbers represent.

Good question and I would also like to get a better understanding what the numbers represent.

I did find a nice article on noise generated by subs, but there's no reference to the sides of the sub nor do the numbers match (the ones in the database).

"Signatures" is the most closely held secret of the US nuclear submarine force. You are unlikely to find truly accurate numbers anywhere, either in the game or in any published data.

Signatures being the actual noise signature of the sub and the engineering of noise quieting technology.

Indeed.

Like the Spy-1 Radar sees 250 NM

It's frustrating not being able to use actual real world numbers. But I understand the implications and would be the first to complain if National Security were at risk.

I can't explain this mathematically, but it seems to me there is a factor of realism that flows across the entire simulator equally.

Once I "accepted" this "Factor" fun was had by all.

I think all ranges are meant as "maximum".

I also have a question about the Signature Type values found in the in game database viewer.

Example:
Ship A has a MF sonar and submarine B has a dB value of 80.5 at that frequency.
submarine B has a VLF sonar and Ship A has a dB value of 110 at that frequency.

From the above example can I surmise that the VLF sonar will pick up Ship A at a longer range than the MF sonar?
Also, is there a way to correlate the dB's vs sonar type into an actual range?

I understand there will be variables in the calculations with layers and such, I was just kind of hoping for a ballpark figure.
I also just picked the sonar types as an example.

Thanks
