Yup, including "German Secret Weapons-blueprint for Mars", "Afrika Korps", and several on the Waffen SS, Artillery and WW2 small arms. Great books.

Can you give me some more general info about these Ballantine books? I take it they're something special. There's nothing better than having a new reference book on WWII. My favorite so far is a reprint of the US War Department "Handbook On German Military Forces" originally handed out to lucky 2nd LT's heading for Europe in early 1945. Lots of good tidbits.

They were originally published in the early 70's. Each volume was written by one or two noted historians and concentrated on a facet of WW1 or WW2. Some of them were republished about 8-9 years later. Haven't seen anything of them until just now...

Hay there, Hum, well the thing is is that they're old. Shouldn't be much of a problem getting them from eBay. I woulda done that but I have no credit card and my mum doesn't trust the internet... Figures. They're great little books, the one I have is all about the Pazner Divisions, and mechanized German warfare, from the beginning to the end. On the very last page there's a list of the books that were out at that time and a few of the later planned ones: D-Day - Spearhead of invasion (Battle book No. 1) Afrika Korps (Campaign book No. 1) Their Finest Hour - the story of the Battle of Britain (Battle book No. 2) U-boat - the secret menace (Weapons book No. 1) Stalingrad - the turning point (Battle book No. 3) Panzer Division - the mailed fist (Weapons book No. 2) Aircraft Carriers - the majestic weapon (Weapons book No. 3) Bastogne - the roadblock (Battle book No. 4) Then the planned ones... ME109 (Weapons book No. 5) The Siege of Leningrad (Battlebook No. 5) The Desert Raiders (Campaign book No. 2) Battle for Berlin (Battle book No. 6) Those are just the ones listed in my book. If my memory serves me correctly there is somewhere around 41 in total... Someone will have to justify me on that because I'm not wholy sure. Anyhow... Cheers ~Chris

I think the Ballantine's books were mostly reprints of the Purnell's series from 1968-1972. I have some titles in both versions and they are identical except for the publishers marks. These are small card-cover books with mostly text, as compared to the Purnell's specials of the mid 70's which were light-on for data and filled up with double page John Bachelor colour drawings. For SPWAW players I would recommend "Barrage" in the series by Ian Hogg. It goes to the trouble of explaining how arty was controlled and allocated along a front. Some of the other titles have careless errors in them, especially regarding Axis equipment. Unfortunately this was quite common at the time they were written. Eg. the ever present spandaus and schmeissers...yuk! :( This is not to say that current authors don't make mistakes. I bought a book on the German Panzer Troops recently that had more than two dozen incorrectly captioned photos in it. And then there are the really bad translation errors.....ahhh. I have been thinking of setting up a web site dedicated to correcting errors in military reference books, but I don't think I could afford the costs of running such a large site. :D

Thanks for the info guys! I'm going to check into your suggestions. There's nothing better to increase the fun with SPWAW than having more knowledge at your fingertips. By the way, as a newbie to this forum just let me say how cool it is to be able to share this great hobby with like minded people from all over the world. Look forward to bumping into you again. :D

:D As I'm typing this I'm looking at my copies of "Ballantines Illustrated History of World War II"-Campaign book #1 Afrika Korps, Weapons book #16 Waffen SS the Asphalt Soldiers, and Battle book #8 Tarawa a Legend Is Born. At my moms house I still have a half dozen more. I wish I had gotten more when I was a kid. I was at the Pomona Gun Show (Los Angeles County) about a year ago and some sellers had the whole set in mint to pretty good condition. Semper Fi Randy

Gumby3D, If you want to know anything about this book set, you can e-mail me at david.a.davenport1@jsc.nasa.gov. The entire Ballantines Illustrated History of the Violent Century was comprised of 154 separate titles, many of which then became separate books published by Ballatines. I have 149 of the 154 titles and have been collecting them for the past 28 years. SOme are easy tpo come by, some are virtually impossible, due to the fact that the entire set is out of print and some of the books had very small print runs. I have 16 duplicate books that I would be willing to sell if you are interested. Anyone reading this post can contact me at the above e-mail and we can talk about this series, which despite its errors, is outstanding in most respects. Iron Cross
