Dear all,
I plan to create a stratigic campaign where several gamers can participate.
To mkae things easy for the beginning I am looking for people who are interested to play over a long time (for a start say half a year) on a stratigic level.
My idea is fairly simple, but involves all people (that want to participate).
I want to recreate a "big" battle lasting several days, where I am not particualar keen on being very historical, but to enjoy the game and it's possebilities.
So. here is what i am talking about:
I want to have , at least three groups of gamers, who will have different functions:
The first group will be the referee group.
Their function is to create a stratigic map and to create scenarios (i.e. battles) for the other two groups.
The other two groups would contain gamers who actually battle each other, i.e. would get the szenarios from the referees.
So far nothing really exciting, but:
Once a szenario is over, the result is transfered back to the referees and they bring the situation to the stratigic map.
This map is transfered to the two playes groups and they now make "stratigical" moves of units and create in that way "new battles". At a defined end (for exammple a battle lasting 2 days) u see wether the given objectives have been fullfilled or not and therefor call one group a winner.
My biggest suggestion about such a campaign is to create a chain of command:
Within the players group u have a "commanding officer" who get's the stratigic map from the referees as well as a list of available material (yes, u read right). That player creates battlegroups and assignes these battlegroups to players in his group. He then transfers the list of the battlegroups back to the referees and his actaul movements on the stratigic map (I will explain this in a moment).
With this movement the referees are able to create "scenarios" for the gamers and send this "scenarios" to each individual gamer and let them play.
After the "scenario" has been finished the two participating gamers sent the results back to the referees. The biggest task now is to have a good "bookkeeping" of what units have been destroyed, cause once destroyed units have to be either replaced or are gone. That has a major impact on the rest of the campaign cause if u loose to many units u may not get on with ur objectives and unlike the campaigns in SPWAW replacements are given at the start of a campaign, i.e. once u have used ur replacements u don't get any more!
To explain the stratigic map I have mad the best expirience with the following system:
U hand out a map which is overlaid by squares. Each square has a specific size, i.e. a square on such a map would represent, let's say a square is 1 KM in size. As we all know all the units have an average speed, like tanks, foot units or trucks. So, all the units move in their average speed on that map. The average speed of a battlegroup created by a "commanding officer" is the slowest unit in such a battlegroup. To move on the stratigic map u now take the average speed and move that many squares on the map as is ur average speed: for example a battlegroup with an average speed of 17 KM would be able to move 17 squares on that map.
Next task is how to create battles/scenarios:
I kept it simple in the way that at the end of each turn u see wether two oppsing forces are near each other or in the same square. If they are in the same square a battle occurs, if they are near each other u give the player the option of battleing each other. If they want to fight fine, but they also have tho option of retire, dig in, wait for reinforcements etc.
A player can be reinforced if he has another battlegroup within a "turn" distance, the only drawback is that only two players can participate in a single battle, i.e. if u have three battlegroups involved, one player has to step back (would be a command decision, hehehe).
That is the masterplan, details have to be defined.
THe most important thing is, whenever there is a question or an unclear situation the referee team rules, simple as that. No discussion, just a decision. Therefor a referee team should contain at least two persons.
That is it all about, now i am waiting for the replies of all the people who would like to participate.
First I will wait for the replies in this forum, as soon as the situation get's more specific I would like to get in touch via e-mail.
Ideas and critics are most wellcome...
George
