What are some of the most amusing mistakes you made while learning the game? My favorite happened on what I think was my second game, when I thought all of the upgrades worked like the doctrine upgrades and didn't realize you needed to individually upgrade units. I was playing as Russia and had weathered the initial German assault, then built lots of units and began a program of counterattacks. I ended up with probably half of the German army in Russia surrounded and cut off from home, but they'd have cities and such to keep from dying, and I couldn't seem to hurt them. Eventually I figured out how upgrades work, and decided to abandon that game as getting my units away from the Germans and in supply so they could get into fighting condition was going to be really annoying.

My dumbest mistake happened the last time I played (today actually) when I had cleared Malta using bombers and my paratroops were all ready in Siracuse to drop in, and yes they had prepared but then they prepared again & again over 4 turns cause I thought clicking on the parachute icon would initiate their actual paradrop but instead it kept redoing their preparations. They were very prepared by the time I moved them onto Malta. On that note, I was also surprised that they lost 3 hitpoints on the drop which I think is a lot considering they are trained paratroops used to skydiving and the target was uncontested, or maybe I rolled really badly for the landing casualties.

Another dumb mistake was in my first game I forgot to move DAK in Africa for their first 2 turns after forming and then I missed them on 2 more turns later on. Ironically that game was the only one that I actually managed to push back the British and cause them heavy casualties using DAK despite having nearly zero supplies.
