Here is the next in the Indian Ocean series.

Indian Ocean Fury #4 - The Red Gate

You’re commanding the newly formed CTF 155 combining diverse forces to secure the island of Socotra and the Bab el Mandeb (BeM), the narrow gateway between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Your forces will conduct several amphibious and airmobile operations while simultaneously fighting for control of the air and sea in this vital maritime choke point.

This scenario relies heavily on ‘Cargo Operations’ so you will need the Chains of War DLC to play.

As always, I look forward to your comments critiques and criticisms.

Yum Yum, more cargo operations...
I will give it a try after I have completed SIMEX 2018.

P.S.
Don't forget Mediterranean Fury

Just taking a brief peek thus far. Maroni has an aircraft but no ground units/cargo.

Maroni has a commercial aircraft, 727 or 737 - cannot recall. Since commercial AC don't have cargo ability, the troops will lua into Djibouti when it arrives.

There is a similar setup in Nairobi

Getting ready to mess with this... couple questions...

USS Peleliu has AIM9 H/L/M in the mag...however the AV8Bs can only use the M models. Are the H/L models a typo?
USS Mount Hood (AE) has no onboard munitions..

Only things that caught my eye at start up...

looks fun!

I'll need to take a look when I get home - but I think the AH-1 Cobra's use the H, and if I'm not mistaken the AV-8B+ (there are some in Kuwait) will use the L. Am not 100% certain though.

Nice Catch on the Mount Hood. Will fix that.

Just double checked..none of the AV8B or B+ or AH-1W use anything but 9Ms. Ali Al Salem has lots of 9Ls but less 9Ms in the mags.

The Brit GR7s and Sea Harriers look ok. GR7s use 9Ls and SHar use 9Ms HMA Ark Royal and RFA Fort Vic both have ample supplies of those.

ON the subject of the Brits... Possibly some Sea Wolf reloads on the Fort Vic? Maybe even Sea Darts...I know Sea Wolf can be unreped..and I would think Sea Dart could since the US could UNREP a RIM-8 Talos.

Possibly some French naval munitions at Djibouti Naval Base?? Don't think any needed at Diego Garcia..too far away.

Just some brainstorming here on what would in place and available.

I'll do a short run through and see what happens...while waiting on the updates.

USMC AV8Bs could use some Mk82 Snakeyes as well... JMHO

PS USS White Plains has no cargo I assume you are using her just as an oiler? From Wiki:"The ships were designed for underway replenishment, in support of carrier task force groups, carrying miscellaneous stores and munitions." However on further review its primarily a stores (parts and provisions) ship with little ammunition aboard.... she's all alone out there... :)

PSS
USS Mount Vernon has M2 Bradleys on board..those are Army not USMC.
USS Cleveland has the M1A1 Plt AND the AAV Company. Typically the AAVs would be on the LST and splash directly from the stern ramp. Also the LSD/LPH would usually have 2 LCACs (or more)

Suggest moving cargo around a little.. AAVs to the LST plus any additional trucks/HMMWVs that fit. My ship (LST1192) when we deployed to Somalia in 94 had 13-15 AAVs (including one R7 and at two C7s IIRC) in the tank deck while on the main deck we had several 5ton trucks and HMMWVs (at least 6 trucks and maybe 10-12 HMMWVs)? and a few cargo containers.

(on our float in '94)The LSD had maintenance and logistics vehicles and a rifle company that was considered the "boat" company...they had trained in the use of zodiacs to conduct raids..not sure if that would work well here or not but thats how it was..

We (24th MEU) had 1 rifle BN of 3 Companies..1 was "tracks" (mine) 1 "boats" and 1 "helo" (on the LHA) the Weapons and HQ Co were spread loaded between the four ships. (we were a 4 ship ARG )

I just looked at the date an realized at this time in 1994 I was somewhere around here heading towards Mogadishu..

Sorry to keep hijacking the thread...

Here is a pic of my track (the one with tan paint visible) as we were going back to the LST in Feb/March from doing something or another...you can see one of the LSD/LPD on the horizon and the LST safety boat escorting us back...

Nice Pic.

Thanks for the advice. I'll see what I can do, but the cargo module has a few anomalies. For instance the AAV don't swim, and have to come ashore on a landing craft of some type. Also I added the M2 to give some form of mobile AT as there are no LAV or Hummers with AT systems.

There aren't really any logistics trucks available, the trucks you see each carry 20 troops. So you can call the cargo loading representative and not exact. I was using Tom Clancy's 'Marine' as a reference.

Fixed up the ammo points you mentioned including the Snakeyes.

The White Plains is indeed out there on her own but I think you'll find some use for her. It is unlikely she will need to or be able to replen anything except maybe the French FF off Somalia.

I'd like to have a reference of some type for the at-sea reload for Sea Dart and Sea Wolf. I'll take a look, do you have anything handy?

Appreciate the help.

Ahh thanks for the info RE: AAVs I haven't fully played with the amphibious side of the game ..well I am NOW...

No I don't have anything handy...I'm making an "assumption" on the Sea Wolf (not VLS) as it's similar in size to Sea Cat and the missile itself weighs less than 200lbs. If we can UNREP 2000lb bombs that are a meter long why not a Sea Wolf in shipping container thats ~2m and a couple hundred pounds. Another point..we can UNREP sidewinders and AMRAAMs, Sea Eagles and Mk46s etc.....

Sea Wolf being reloaded for size comparison..

RE: Sea Dart...just guessing...it's probably NOT UNREP capable as it must be fitted into the vertical magazine. I was initially thinking about how large a Talos missile was...but then remembered it's a large missile that comes in sections and is stored in a horizontal magazine running the length of the ship. So most likely Sea Dart is in port only..I'd assume VLS Sea Wolf is in port only also...

Well this photo would indicate that Sea Dart can be RAS'd

So yeah, I'll put some Sea Darts & Wolf as I think in both cases it is 'possible' unless someone can prove otherwise.

OK the ammo fixes are made but I won't release an update yet as the fixes are not critical. I am waiting for some Lua advice on a couple events and 40+ folks have downloaded so we'll see what some of them have to say.

Thanks.

Just downloaded today, but haven't gotten a chance to start running through it (It's finals season here at the Academy ). Ill see if I can get started with it this weekend and find anything but DEFINITELY keep up the scenarios using Cargo Ops. It adds a hell of a lot more depth and it has a lot of potential!

Just a comment, could it be possible to add whatever AT weapon the LAV/Hummer has via lua upon the formation of the armored/landed detachment or whatever it is? It wouldn't be perfect, but it doesn't effect unit speed, and would be somewhat more realistic.

Also for the AAVs, an event using the "old fashioned" method of cargo delivery could allow the representation (at the very least) of them swimming to the shore. Would this be possible?

Obviously, design the scenario as you see fit, but if you would like a way to make the amphib op a little more realistic, this theoretically could be an option.

Played for an hour or so just to get the feel for log ops. Will start again soon.

My question is how much are we supposed to count on ground forces doing combat ops? Ground combat is the game's spazzy little brother...

If all the prep is done - ground ops should be little to none. There are a few things that I've worked in to keep the player focused on the ground element (some for next release) but if all the precautions are made and there are resources made available the ground on ground stuff should be minimal.

FlyForLenin

As for the AT stuff, I'm not too worried about it, very minor really. Your idea for the AAV positioning may be a good one though, will just have to think about the best way to trigger it. Thanks.

Another ammo request..not sure if it's needed or not but..doesn't hurt to ask..

On the respective countries supply ships they could use some 100/114/127mm gun ammo and HOT missiles and other ship related ordnance... Not sure if I'll be doing lots of NGFS BUT it would be nice to have reloads available...

Only about 6 hours in so far..going to try and knock out a little more tonight..

Gunner,
Thanks for another good one!

I’m about 4-5hrs into the scenario. I’m in agreement with TOO’s request for the snakeyes. I’d also suggest some Mk77 fire bombs as well. Wiki refers to conversation with a Marine General.

No errors experienced. SPOILER ALERT

One of the first things I did was launch a strike on Socotra. 6 Omani Jaguars, 2 F-15E, 2 AV-8B. These were escorted by 2 Av8B and 2 AMRAAM Harriers. While I spotted aircraft on the field none launched. Your surprise caused an issue but with some luck 2 of the GBU meant for the runway were redirected there with 100% success. However, the Omani’s paid the price with 3 downed over the island. All three crew successfully ejected but landed on or near the field..

Couple of small points:
In the special missions tab, the one regarding Tornados has Kuwait misspelled.
The side briefing under the intel on Socotra, the second bullet point; I don’t understand what you mean there.
VP-46 #6, The airborne P-3 had Djibouti as it’s base, intentional? The rest are based at Diego Garcia.

For a bit of fun,, I might suggest to rename the South African Airways 727-100C. Wikipedia says SAA stopped operating those in the early 80’s. B727s were certainly operating throughout Africa during the period of the scenario. So, for your upcoming writing project might I suggest something like GAR Air Charters( GAC.). The GAR standing for Gunner-AirborneRifles. . Alternatively, Matrix Air Charters (MAC). Anyway, I’m sure you get the point.

I’m enjoying this and appreciate the effort . The book will be a definite first day buy for me!
Thanks

Thanks Badlandz

Mk77, will do but only limited stocks. From what I understand it was left over from Viet Nam and due for destruction - dropping it on bad guys is the best way of destruction that I know of though

Will fix up the other stuff - thanks for picking it up.

Overerlord

Good point on NGS ammo. It might come in handy...

Mk47 was the old Vietnam era stuff... Mk77 is the new hotness

Considered current production from what I understand...

Have accumulated a/c at Thumrait and sent a SEAD mission over Socatra, queued by a TLAM strike to get any SAM defenses radiating. This works and HARMs make quick work of defending radar-guided SAMs. Follow up with an airfield strike by Omani Jags that obliterate remaining Sov a/c there, though they lose one Jag doing so. Other nautical defenders of Socatra also eliminated. Lots of ferrying of ground forces to Djibouti. Transalls are mainly personnel transports while Hercs carry the cargo. This might take a while. Also noting that Djibouti is going to get packed with a/c without a little planning.

Couple questions..
The AV8B C141 has landed at thumrait but I didn't get any munitions. Is there a time delay for the lua to move them?

Second.. the fighters at sana'a have no reloads not sure if that was your intention.

I got this Lua error message regarding the C141

09:20:45 - 09:20:45 - Lua script execution error: [string "C-141 arrives Thumrait"]:8: ')' expected near 'Sign'

09:20:45 - 09:20:45 - Event: 'C-141 arrives Thumrait' has been fired.

If you need it I have the save file

Thanks Andrea G - no need for a save I know what the problem is!

I'm just back home now and will get an update out in a couple days.

To fix and keep playing - are you comfortable in the editor?

-Go to actions - open up the action Lua-C-141 at Thumrait (or something close to that)
-Copy all but the last line (the one that has the message with the extra quote marks in it)
-Go to the Lua Consul, (editor menu at the bottom.
-Paste the code in the bottom window and hit run

The ammo will be at Thumrait

If your not comfortable doing that, send me the file and I'll fix and send back.

Sorry bout that.

Ok more questions..

LCVPs and LCMs at Djibouti don't have the fuel to get to bem and back. The LPD can only embark 2 LCVPs.

Are they supposed to be used with the other phibs near socatra?

OK here is the next version with most of the issues mentioned above taken care of.

Regarding the landing craft at Djibouti: Those were in place at war start - well before a mission was clear. If you cannot find a use for them, I'd be surprised, but Socotra is a USMC operation.

I've figured out how to use the LCVPs...however the LCMs don't have the fuel to get to Perim Island and return. The LCVPs can be brought aboard the LPD (2 at a time for refueling) but the LCMs are to large...am I missing something?
