So let's say it is summer of '44 and you have as the allies successfully invaded the Marianas. You have to head back to Pearl for repair and refit, obviously.

What do you do about your new bases on Saipan, Guam and Tinian? If the IJN is mostly intact, albeit having lost a lot of DDs, he'll most likely hit your newly won bases. Aside from:

1. Deploying PT boats (how many?)
2. Laying mines.

What else is there to do?

I would leave a fair amount of CA/CL/DDs as well as plenty of fighters and USMC SBDs and TBFs, and perhaps skip-bombing B-25s. Depending on how nearby IJ bases are doing, you may want B-24s to suppress them. You'll also need aux vessels such as AEs, AKEs, ADs, etc. to keep your vessels resupplied (unless you have a lot of nav support on hand). Would not hurt to have an AR or two as well.

Cheers,
CC

Well, lots of patrolling subs comes to mind.

And, to make him more cautious, you could withdraw say 50 hexes then come back with your carrier force and strong SCTFs to take on whatever he came forward with. So what if you delay your upgrades two more weeks?

At this time your fleet should be larger than his - send a detachment home and your fleet train service the fleet on station.
This assumes you have a base in the Marshalls to do a quick rearm / refuel at.

Some INF/Armor/CD units for garrison (to prevent quick counterlandings).
Some serious Fighters for solid CAP + Base forces.
Some planes for Naval attack (Marine SBDs with escorts) + Base forces/Air HQs.
Solid search coverage (PB4Y, PV-1, PBY-5)+ Base forces/AVDs/AVPs/AVs.
Some heavy bombers to keep nearby Japanese bases suppressed (Pagan/Yap/Ulithi/Truk/etc.) + Base Forces.
Several cruiser SCTFs + Destroyer SCTFs + PT TFs + Subs + ASW TFs.
Some Naval Auxiliaries (AKEs, ADs, AGs, ARs, ACMs, AMs) to keep your bases and ships operational.

That should do for a moment.

You most certainly do NOT have to go back to Pearl.

When I came to the Marianas I brought the kitchen sink.

Both Agrihan (albeit Agrihan is enhanced to a level 5 port in the scenario I am playing) and Guam were turned into forward supply and repair hubs.

Both have over 500k supply (Guam is at 800K) and 250k fuel.

Both have almost every AR and ARD in the American inventory deployed there including multiple 55 ton capacity ARDs.

I have deployed Fleet Advanced Base Forces to both Guam and Agrihan which provide 432 naval support each.

My fleet is repairing and replenishing in place at the Mariainas while prepping for a leap to the PI.

The only thing I am having to return to Pearl for is upgrades and major repairs of cripples. Now that things have quieted I am rotating CVE divisions back to Pearl for upgrades.

Agrihan is now my most forward submarine base.

Supply and Fuel divisions are making round trips between Pearl and the Marianas steadily increasing supply and fuel to provide for the next leap forward.

Only a very small handful of very heavily damaged ships have returned to Pearl.

Divest yourself of the "I have to go back" mentality and instead adopt the "what do I need to bring forward to sustain my effort" mentality.

Or, just garrison the bases and leave them with a healthy dose of supply and go home. If they are well garrisoned then they can resist any Japanese advances in 1944 with ease. Especially if you are active in other theaters. Return when you have refitted and are ready to fully support the bases. When you are ready to resume operations do as Hans did and send very strong forces there to hold the base and support your air power. You should be superior in surface ships by now. A strong surface presence supported by LBA should be enough.

Or just attack him elsewhere and keep him busy. In 1944, the imitative should lie with you. If not, you are losing..

Tell me about it. By summer '45 I'll be happy if I have 800k supply for the 'Empire'.

Couldn't resist a follow up.

Backing up that 800k supply at Guam is 8 million at Pearl and 26 million at San Fran.

My four quarter million supply each SupDivs are currently plying back and forth between Pearl and the Marianas looking to get 2 million to Guam for the leap to the PI.

The Allies are swimming in supply as my game enters December of '44.

Strangely though, I have almost depleted the East Coast running supply form there to Aden and Capetown.

Awe!!!!

That's just M&M Enterprises (TM - Cap Mandrake) diverting the entire EC supply chain to "alternate service delivery channels".
