As expected the boys were looking for a landing at Rockhampton. It's a natural choke point to cut off the north of the east coast of Australia.
The bad news for them is there's 111AV, mainly armor, behind level 2 forts and building. And the British 18th is on the way but will take 3 days to get out of strat mode.

The worse news is the Banshees have their eye in and the Japs had no air cover because the KB was hitting Brisbane, the Banshees are at Rockhampton.
Japanese Ships
xAP Dairen Maru, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAP Hakone Maru, Bomb hits 1

Japanese ground losses:
607 casualties reported
Squads: 10 destroyed, 24 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 8 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled
Guns lost 17 (5 destroyed, 12 disabled)

She sank that round. We also achieved a penetrating hit each on CA Myoko, CA Maya and CL Yura- with 1000lb bombs no less.

In other naval action an IJN DMS was sunk on the west coast of Malaya by a light cruiser force bent on bombardment. CL Ceres suffered a torpedo hit from a submarine on retiring..

We also lost an xAK to submarine surface action on the east coast of NZ (she was unescorted).

Right you lot- if there is anyone who is NOT reading the other AAR- do you think they are coming hard for Aussie land or is this a feint before an invasion of India or the West Coast? Knowing our opponents flair for the dramatic it could be anything.

Their play to date has been a bit spotty- they've come a long way south without providing air support- they've only just got bombers in Noumea and that's the only working air base >lvl 1 they have south of Port Moresby. The lack of naval search on their side with a few Catalina squadrons with AVD/AVP support on our side has allowed me to play cat and mouse with cruisers in the south pacific with gratifying- although not hugely significant results. Their losses have not been particularly high but it has definitely slowed down their base grab. As it stands now it's the end of January and although Palemburg fell with virtually no damage I'm stripping all of the fuel out of Burma and have returned tankers to the DEI to ship from Soerbaja which is still not being reconned.

Supply levels in Australia have started building, the British 18th is in theatre and another Aussie division from Aden will be arriving shortly.

I'm not sure if this mod has restricted load capacities or slows down base building- anyone know? (DBB B from memory).

So- is there any Allied fans out there not reading the dark side?

I read the other side months and months ago, and honestly can't even remember the jokes, all the Rs for Ls and trying to decipher it left me a little light headed.

However, I am not really a huge AFB.

Just some observations:

You seem to be doing well giving the IJN some good bloody noses. Well done.

Put some dates on your AAR....would help.

Japanese intentions: Don't know, but don't let that bother you since Japan can steamroller you pretty much anywhere they want to. Seems you want to defend Oz heavily, so go for it, just remember your troops kind of stink currently and are very poor on the offense. I doubt Japan would shoot for NZ. Micromanage your troop's device stockpiles carefully.

How is the fuel levels in Oz? Be careful as it is very easy to run dry very quickly and your ships there will be in deep trouble. My rule of thumb is early on the only safe port is Cape Town no matter how good your naval search is. You have some lovely ships that upgrade in 43 or sooner to really nice designs.

You seem to be doing great so far!

Agree with most of Lowpe's remarks. I have read the other AAR so I cannot be specific about anything.

In general it seems to me the Japanese player only has enough naval stuff to steamroll in two areas at a time, the four areas being India/Burma, Australia/DEI/Philippines, Centpac/Sopac , and NorPac/NW North America. China is not on the list because it does not require naval assets for Japan to attack strongly there.

By 1943 he can only defend what he has, rather than extend his operations, barring some major disaster to Allied navies and loss of unrestricted troops.

So if it looks like he is concentrating on Oz and SoPac, India is likely OK other than the Cacutta area. (Burma can be taken by a contingent of old Japanese ladies at this point!). If he breaks off the current attacks on Oz and sends KB to the Indian Ocean, you should have time to divert some troops there before he steamrolls it.

And time is Japan's enemy - every day spent in one area is one more day for the other areas to get stronger. Just keep building up where you can in all four areas until you have the stuff to go on the offensive. Meanwhile, hit and run attacks are a great way to slow them down and keep them honest about covering everything they bring. Keep doing what you are doing and stop worrying about what you cannot know - their future plans.

Thanks for the suggestions guys

Regarding the Aussie squads I've been micromanaging those and all but one regiment are upgraded from the CMF Militia to the '41 CMF Inf Section
Fuel levels are ok- there's about 120K with another 70K being unloaded at Perth, supply levels are much better with over 100K each in Melbourne and Sydney with significant levels in Perth waiting to get across the railway link.

29th Jan 42

SW Pacific
The Japanese invade Australia!

The 4th Div with 2nd Tank Reg, AA, Base support and construction battalions have landed. Total AV currently 397.

Opposing them there's 120AV of Aussie armor and the British 18th should have arrived in this turn in strategic mode- I expect an attack to come in before they can move to combat mode. A second Australian division is moving in strat mode to the base to the SE.

The Banshees which did a sterling job in the previous turn against uncapped TF's suffered heavily at the hands of the KB Zeroes flying cap of Rockhampton despite brave escorts from a single P40 squadron. They did manage to put three 1,000lb bombs into a couple of xAP's. The KB pilots suffered a day of frustration with dive bombers finding the marauding PT boats rather difficult to hit.

Coastal defense units based at Rockhampton did a reasonable job, not hits were scored against unloading ships but 21 combat squads were destroyed or disabled during the pre invasion bombardment and unloading phases.

There's virtually nothing north of Rockhampton so they haven't cut much off. Forts at Sydney and Melbourne are at 3 each.

Out in the islands CA Canberra and friends stumbled into CA Aoba and CA Kaka off Suva, damage was light on both sides and the result indecisive.

A light cruiser force raided Pago Pago sinking an E class and PB, meanwhile the American carriers to the north revealed their position by sinking CM Tokiwa and AS Jingei.

Burma/India
I've started pulling back the 1st Burma Div which was holding to the NW of Moulmain, they'll move north and across into India

Ceylon has 9 Indian brigades with forts at 3 except for Jaffna and Koggla which need more work.

The 5th Chinese Corp (currently 256AV, upgrades to a monster +800 squads) has just entered Burma proper after being bought out. They'll move north to Katha and also across into India- probably stationed at Chittagong to provide a nasty surprise should the Japanese land there.

Bombay just achieved level 3 forts, Calcutta and Karachi have ~2.5. Port Blair is also at 2.5 with a British brigade in place as a speed bump.

DEI

The B17's actually managed to hit an oilfield last night, their first night success of the year. It was only one bomb though.....

Balikapan and all of Java remain in Allied hands for now. I'm (very late) in re-routing some tankers back to Soerabja to pull some more oil out.

Pretty quiet otherwise.

Nth Pacific
Land of the ice and cold- realm of the Penguin. He's up to something but we'll have to wait and see.

British Brigades are pretty valuable in the India/Burma region once they get decent leaders and some experience/training, BUT the pools for filling them out are shallow and fill at a trickle. That means they will take forever to fill out if they are destroyed and bought back. If you can find some other, smaller units to put at Port Blair, now is the time to do it before the IJN cuts it off. Once cut off and bombarded, supply will run out and forts will not help the disabled defenders.

CA Kaka? The survivors of the Battle of Savo Island can attest that the 6-gunned Japanese CAs were not s**t!

Nth Pacific? You have too many to count!! No wonder you are short of ships to cover them!

And I must mention that the polar bears ate all the penguins in the north, so they can only be found in the Antarctic regions and southern islands, South America, New Zealand and South Africa. Don't be fooled by the Coca Cola commercials!

BigRed sent me a PM asking if this game was still going because lets face it- my AAR updating has been lax..... a bit.

So here we go
1st March 42

SW Pacific
The Shinto boys hold Rockhampton and Bundaberg, bugger- the home of bundy rum. The bogans will need to switch to something else now.

I've just fallen back from the hex NW of Maryborough because of a flanking move threatening on the inland road. It's allowed me to pull the British 18th and the Australian 1st Div back to Maryborough, relieving the 6th Div which is falling back to Brisbane. Only level 2 forts and getting regularly bombarded by BB/CA's. Brisbane has been copping a hammering from the sea as well and is at level 3 but without the forest to hide in the units suffer higher losses/disruption. I've stopped basing fighters there.

Inland bases continue to build slowly, Towoomba is lvl 2 airfield and forts, the flanking move above was only a probe and the 1st Ind Engineer Regiment and Kure 2nd SNLF suffered >600 casualties last turn with very little allied losses (primarily due to the armour heavy attack). Interestingly despite being on a major road they had a negative modifier for supply.

Further back I'm fortifying Tamworth, Bathurst, Sydney, Port Kembla and Melbourne. Supply levels are good with 400,000 points between Sydney and Melbourne.

The boys have moved a bit slow for an all in Aussie invasion- I'm taking care to fortify my inland LOC to avoid an amphib invasion cutting off my forces defending around Brisbane. In addition reinforcements have been brought in- the Americal division is about to reform at Melbourne and the 11th Indian Division was pulled out of Malaya almost intact (88% of TOE) and will upgrade to 42 model squads in the next week with the Aussies not far behind.

The 7th Australian division will be back home within a week and if necessary I'll move in the 5th Chinese corp which was bought out and is starting to replenish squads in India.

In terms of hitting back we've made a few port strikes against Rockhampton with moderate success, damaging xAK and CM's. The KB is still largely unchallenged and is continuing to hold station off the east coast of Australia.

They've started backfilling the rest of the Pacific with landings at Funufati, Luganville, Tulagi etc. We did have some luck ambushing the amphib force at Funufati, unfortunately after unloading was complete- there were allied SCTF's operating in the area

Burma/India
Most forces are pulling back from Burma and are at Mekilta or north with token forces at Magwe behind level 3 forts (but low supplies). Unless an aggressive paradrop occurs the bulk of the combat troops will evacuate successfully to India with the exception of the 16th Indian brigade which was cut off by the original amphibious landing and is currently taking in the sights in northern Thailand.

I've started pulling back the 1st Burma Div which was holding to the NW of Moulmain, they'll move north and across into India

Ceylon has been evacuated of all unrestricted troops to reinforce the mainland given the diversion of the Australian and British divisions to Australia.

Surprisingly there has been very little in the way of aggressive moves towards Port Blair where I have 120AV behind level 2 forts (87% towards level 3- sooo slooooow),

DEI

The Japanese have landed in force and the Dutch are falling back to Tjilatjap and Djokjakarta. They've also moved into Medan but have been unsuccessful at ejecting the defenders thus far (despite a couple of attacks).

A final tanker force is sneaking into Balikapan to pull out some more oil, there's very little in Java but I've not attempted to pull any out of Java

Single ship TF's have done well getting supply into the Phillipines with Bataan at 19K and Manila at 4K

RE Combatant losses
1 BB reported apiece- Fuso and Royal Sovereign

3 Jap CA's vs 4 Allied
2 Jap CL's vs 6 Allied (not so good)

Surprisingly Japanese aircraft losses lead the allies at 954 vs 946 for the campaign. The highest plane losses?- 205 A6M2's followed by 162 P40E Warhawks.

Getting 3 of his 18 CAs this early in the war is very good. Many consider the CAs more dangerous than the Japanese BBs because of their speed and torpedo striking power.
Don't sweat the CLs - once the Cleveland class start to arrive you will replace those 6 in about a month! Before then, you also get some 12-gun British town class CLs like Newcastle and Glasgow.

Oh dear- despite all the best of intentions I haven't been updating this at all. In reality I can't really compete with the AAR quality of my opponents- and given their AAR moves to the top of the list after we send a turn back- and then a few days later we get the combat replay- all the breaking news is handled on the Japanese side as well.

However with a bit of time on my hands while we sort out some combat replay issues I thought I'd drop a line in here- perhaps if enthusiasm and time allows I'll take the opportunity to put in a more detailed report tomorrow.

The current game date is 20th May 1942. The pace is relatively slow, averaging 1 turn a week and interrupted as one or the other of us is unavailable. I don't mind the slower pace and can go faster- but it doesn't seem to be bothering any of the others either. It's easy enough to pick up the pace at this stage in the game. My other PBEM however- which stretches for weeks between turns- is much more of a slog to flip a turn in. The longer delay and the sheer size of the logistics for mid 1944 in the Allies means it takes me 2-4 hours to do a turn. Pretty crazy- but having been beaten all over the map in a scen 2 game- it's nice to be finally getting some good kicks in :)

Anyway- back to this game. The IJA has been stopped in it's tracks and while not being rolled back- is retreating back up the east coast of Australia- if they stop long enough- or if I can slow them down enough I'm looking forward to giving them a severe kicking. There's more than enough ground units in theater to achieve that and the KB has been off swanning around the DEI. Looks like mini KB is supporting the invasion of Ceylon which will probably fall.

The IJN BB's were giving me all sorts of grief- nigh on unstoppable bombarding up and down the coast of oz and forced me to shift my airfield building inland. Eventually a combination of increasing allied air power and some well placed torpedoes appear to have given them some pause- again helped out by the absence of the KB.

I intend to continue to pursue and evict the IJA from the east coast- the next steps depend on if they conquer Ceylon and push into India and/or where KB ends up. To be honest- it may not even matter if they push into India.

David (Fabertong) is in a ground slog in China and building his forces in the Pacific but I think he's a little bored- the US CV's having recently raided Hokkaido. To be fair- I've been pinching a good bit of his land units and getting dents in a few of his capital ships- but the relatively quiet air war in India has allowed me to move some fighter units in to assist the Chinese- something that is now biting me in the ar@E with very little fighter support available in Ceylon. Still- they were better used to keep the Japanese honest in China.

So far no one has lost any carriers, the allies have lost two R class battleships and the USS Nevada (ok- to be honest- I got all three sunk- but lets not get into details)

CA 8 of ours vs 4 of theirs
CL 10 of ours vs 2 of theirs
DD 37 vs 28

Not great- basically they've gained twice as many points for ships lost than we have. About even on aircraft losses and we're significantly behind on army losses (4600 vs 800)

Overall the VP point ratio is 16298:10602 in their favor

EDIT
I just realised there was an issue when I was looking at ship losses- the BB losses aren't as lop sided as I thought- they've lost Ise and Fuso- not a bad trade for 2 R class and Nevada.

Ok so there was little movement on the AAR front- but the game is still ticking over. The use of dropbox for moving turns back and forth is causing some issues with my game partner having trouble accessing it and I haven't figured out how to get automatic updates when someone uploads a new file. Does anyone know how to set that up?

May 22nd 1942

In the game itself the Allied army is pursuing the IJA up the east coast of Australia but can't slow down the retreating divisions enough to bring them to a decisive battle. Attempts at using under strength (and outclassed) armored units to cut the lines of retreat have resulted in heavy losses from sustained air attack. On the bright side this has prevented these bombers being used in an anti shipping role- allowing allied carriers to move up the east coast to the apparent evacuation port (Townsville).

However with only the British carriers in play- and only 2 flight decks the results have been disappointing with the zero cap effectively disrupting the attackers resulting in valuable airframe and pilot losses with no return.
Allied aircraft losses
Albacore I: 2 destroyed
F4F-3 Wildcat: 1 destroyed
SBD-3 Dauntless: 5 destroyed, 3 damaged
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 destroyed by flak

Japanese Ships
CA Kumano
TB Kiji

A smaller strike further south met lighter CAP and the Albacores were able to put a fish into a Japanese DD.
Japanese Ships
DD Sagiri, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage

May 22nd Continued

A port strike by B17 and B26 bombers on Townsville was disappointing with only 1 port hit scored. The remainder of the facilities were protected from further damage by the Japanese shipping present

Port hits 1
xAK Nozima Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Kotoku Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Singapore Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AKE Azuchi Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Tokiwa Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Atlas Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Kogane Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Clyde Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Sanko Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Hankow Maru, Bomb hits 1
xAK Syohei Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Midori Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Elsewhere the Japanese continue to push resources into Ceylon. Time will tell if they move into India proper. Given building Allied forces and the presence of Dutch forces continuing to hold out in Java I'm toying with the idea of landing the bulk of the unrestricted Allied army there but without the '43 squad upgrades and the risk of being cut off from supplies by the dominance of the KB will likely stay my hand.

It's been a long time since I've posted in this AAR and the game is still going- slowly.

However I had to share the latest email I sent to my esteemed opponents.

What’s your policy on Mulligans or do overs?

Personally I’m against them.

Fair warning- the fit is about to hit the shan.

I’m going to need the weekend to work through the turn given all the new toys.
