Turn 189
14th January 1944

5 bombardments and 1 attack last turn. I pressed the wrong button so didn't see the playback . I don't know what I missed.

As for the bombardments the British were targeted - and hit - in the south, while the US forces in the north were also targeted but the Axis artillery there must be weaker as the results were negligible.

The one attack was against the cut-off French battalion - but the North African troops held firm.

I decide to deploy the 3rd Free French Algerian Division with US VI Corps - and they will be sent north beefed up with a US engineer battalion. The US forces sent to Terni will be ordered back south to assist the planned envelopment.

I order two attacks - on and north of the Rome road, while to the south a bombardment is requested with a view to an attack later.

On II Corps' front there is a bombardment planned for north of Tivoli, while to the south, elements of 1st Armoured and 92nd Division have been requested to assist the 5th Canadian Division's assault on a German recce unit from the 26th Panzer Division holding the north-south road.

Mixed fortunes....

The 'excellent' Canadian/US attack was rudely rebuffed and the attacking units have gone into reorganisation.

However VI Corps are doing the business as both attacks forced the enemy into retreat.

II Corps will seek to force the issue north of Tivoli instead using full artillery and aerial support.

The turn starts to fizzle out as units become disorganised or don't have enough points left to attack. I decide to remain cautious and not try and force things. The only attack in the 3rd Round is launched by X Corps. The Kiwis are successful in pushing the enemy back and the 9th Brigade move in.

For the last round the 2nd Moroccan Division, ably supported by a US tank battalion, attack the German tank destroyer unit that tried to interfere with my advance up the east coast....

The German armour was forced to retreat along the road. And strangely - but luckily - I get another round in This consists of bombardments only.

The Axis are back bashing the partisans once more - plus a couple of bombardments against the CW.

The Germans definitely seems to be bringing in lots of reinforcements so I try and keep the momentum up despite many units being in reorganisation mode. US VI Corps conduct a couple of successful attacks in the north and then the Kiwis gain more ground. But in XIII Corps front unexpected gains are made southeast of Cisterna before - at the end of just the second round - this happens....

Both of these attacks were hugely expensive for the Allies and that they never got the chance to follow up makes it all the more painful....

The Germans get in 7 bombardments at various points along the front - one of which involved the Luftwaffe who were beaten off with heavier losses - although not before they made their attack count.

Not critical losses but as ever, these continue to add up.....

On VI Corps front the enemy has built up two large stacks of units and these evaporate a battalion that tries to move

The 753rd Tank Bn. forces a German flak unit back, thus surrounding an infantry battalion. But this unit is well dug-in and I don't want massive losses in rooting it out. I order a bombardment initially.

Over at II Corps, east of Tivoli I attempt to destroy a lone flak unit, while the British XIII and X Corps continue bombardments.

The released infantry from Terni head slowly south through the mountains to try and envelope the Germans from the north.

8 bombardments from the Axis and some of these are pretty big numbers

Three of these were against partisans (and one of those caused no effect) but of the remaining five, three were against the Kiwi/British stack in X Corps area. Well over 50 infantry squads and numerous AT guns were lost.

The other bombardments were against the Polish and US forces respectively and the losses were manageable.

The Algerians - or more accurately the American engineers sent to repair the bridge - come up against the enemy west of Terni. They beat a hasty retreat. With no more infantry this is about the extent of my advance in the north.

The turn saw action either end - the US VI Corps succeeded in forcing German tanks back in the north at the start of the turn and British forces did the same to a German infantry battalion in the south at the end.

Sandwiched in between were bombardments. I was tempted a few times to risk more attacks but I take my own advice and don't try and force things.

No, just about normal so far. Although once I go into the city at night, I will be doomed.

5 Axis bombardments - one against partisans and the rest levelled against the 8th Army. 20 Field Artillery pieces are destroyed, although 11 enemy pieces were destroyed by counter-battery fire.

In response there are attacks from most Corps (this is the position with one round left)

French Mountain Corps

The pesky assault gun detachment continues to hang around - as does the Italian Flak detachment to the north. I am starting to feel a little more comfortable on this front as the French mountain battalions (that had been on mop up duty) are now nearing the front along with three US infantry battalions.

While X Corps sector has been quiet this turn (if you can call the amount of artillery shells quiet) the British/Polish units to the south have picked up the tab once more.

British XIII Corps

For the last round II Corps decide they want a piece of the action too!

British X Corps

This 'excellent' attack, supported by massed artillery and aircraft proved costly and failed to gain ground as a German flak unit stubbornly held on.

Just four rounds for the Allies that turn then a proficiency failure means no screenshots. Two hexes taken - in VI and X Corps areas.
