Status: offline 		I'm surprised this isn't answered yet. Though it is the middle of the day in North America.

I can't think of any DD classes with three stacks, though I'm no expert on Japanese destroyers. One of the stacks looks off center, is another ship alongside giving the illusion of three stacks?

Status: offline 		It looks like a Mutsuki to me based on the size/slant of the stacks and spacing of probable armament locations - no distinctive spots for the 3x2 torpedo launchers on the Minekaze and Kamikaze classes, which look most similar, and the sequencing of the torpedo tubes vs. masts/superstructure is wrong but still a potential match for the Mutsukis. The foremost "stack" I think is an illusion in this picture, but I'm not sure how or from what.

Status: offline 		I was thinking an old Kamikaze type DD, of WWI or pre WWII vintage. Haven't had time to investigate yet.

PS - Kamikaze was with CA Haguro when the latter was sunk by British DDs, I think in the Indian Ocean. I know BB Richelieu was heading for the intercept when the British DDs beat her to the punch, and this was after the Battle of Leyte Gulf when the Japanese holdings in Malaya and Burma were collapsing.

Kamikaze was shot up by AA guns like the 2 pounder and headed to port (don't recall which) for repairs. I vaguely recall it being torpedoed by a sub shortly afterward, so my guess in the Indian Ocean/Bay of Bengal area. All speculation until I can compare pics of the ship.

EDIT: Looked up a picture of Kamikaze and she had only two funnels.
The ship in the picture has the funnel arrangement that fits CL Tatsuta:

Status: offline 		Pretty sure it's a WW1-era Kaba-class. If that's the case, I'm guessing the answer is a trick within a trick - Sakaki was torpedoed by U-boat in the Mediterranean doing convoy escort in 1917, but made it back to Malta and was repaired. The whole class survived the war and were all scrapped years before WW2 broke out. So the answer would be 'none'.

(Also, I can make out 'Ka-' as the first part of ship name in the pic, so I think that' probably Kaba or Kaede, not Sakaki.)

Status: offline 		I agree with ushakov and the entire Kaba class was retired in 1932.

Very interesting story about the class. I had no idea about Japanese fleet serving in the Med in WWI.

Status: offline 		Great answers i did found the picture in a forum on Facebook and i posted; the correct answers is the DD-SAKAKI a WW1-ship but the curious thing and that why i posted is that was protecting MALTA and sunk by an Austrian-submarines in the mediterranean sea.

But not the Sakaki I think. Pre world war 2 Japanese ships had their names written in reverse in Katakana normally.

This is a picture I found of the Sakaki. The name is clearly visible in the middle of the ship. Ki- Ka- Sa.



the one in the picture that you posted, has a name starting with Ka. You can see ?-Ka on the back side of the ship. Like ushakov pointed out. A different ship of the same class.

Status: offline 		I can see the Ka in Hiragana. It's probably in google somewhere but I was always under the impression ship names were written in Katakana.

Maybe the era makes a difference
