You are clicking on a shortcut to install the basic version of the game. I see two shortcuts on your desktop, it would seem one is to play the game and the other is to install the game.

Actually, it looks like you might have three shortcuts.

A quick question to graphics. I just successfully installed 1126b and it runs great with only the command switches -w -px1920 -py1080, although letters, map and everything appear quite small/"zoomed out".

After a first turn, the Combat Screen produced some faults, as you can see in the screenshot, the map is getting split. There's no such split in Air Combat, but no planes at all can be seen there in the window, only clouds. Interestingly Ground Combat and Submarine Attack seem to run normal!

By the way, I cut away the task bar in that screenshot, but you can see that AE at least nicely fills out my screen. Perhaps someone has an idea concerning the Combat Screen, I really don't know much about those switches, thanks a lot!

I have run several scenario 1, turn 1 as Japan with two settings.

Historical turn 1 and December 7th surprise on.
Historical turn 1 and December 7th surprise off.

It seems like from the results, that the December 7th surprise setting changes nothing.

The number of allied airplanes destroyed on ground are about the same around 110.
I loose about the same number of planes in air to air, so number of allied fighters launching must be roughly the same.
Finaly the Allies launch a few air strikes from Philipines and Malaya in both settings.

Version: 1.8.11.26b

Are the december 7th surprise setting disabled?

cheers

Not that I know of. Maybe the surprise setting makes a greater difference at places other than PH?

I looked at results from intire turn and not only at combat result for PH.

I have however discovered when i look at "Preferences and options" screen after turn 1.
It is always set as "Surprise on", no matter what i choose in menu before loading scenario 1.

You may change it in the device file for that weapon.

The complication is when hard code cuts in. A torpedo is replaced by two large bombs
for example. That code ignores the alt weapon field in the weapon record.

No.

The "historical" option for the 7 December 1941 is hard coded. With that option selected neither the Japanese nor the Allied human player is able to input any orders. The same historical targets and moves are pursued and the historical conditions are reproduced. Different random rolls can affect the combat results but the divergence is usually only minor and consistent with the historical results.

There is no bug at play here. Nor is there anything unusual displayed here. It is all WAD when the selection made is "historical" 7 December 1941.

So what you are saying are that if the Historical setting is picked.
The 7th december surprise setting is hardcoded to on?

I didn't realize you were talking about historical as I had focused in on "surprise". Yes, the historical first turn setting is very much fixed (but the outcomes still go through the routines, I do *not* mean to imply the outcomes are fixed). With non-historical first turn you can choose surprise or not surprise.

Correct.

Selecting the option "surprise off" is incompatible with the option "historical December 1941". If it were allowed it would be impossible to produce results consistent with the historical outcome. That might please some Allied players but would 100% guarantee that every Japanese player (and even some Allied players) would be extremely angry and generate angry web commentary, all leading to poor game sales.

Bottom line is anyone who selects the "historical" option has an expectation that a result generally consistent with the historical outcome for that single, opening turn, will ensue. The historical Allied nations were caught by surprise on 7 December 1941. It is simply not logical to expect ready and waiting Allied nations for the historical blows delivered on the "Day of Infamy".

OK. Iam fine with that.

The game are not won or lost during turn 1, whatever happens at PH.

I would like to se more planes destroyed on ground though.
But i assume the current setting are deliberate and choosen for game balance.

Cheers

Hi guys. I'm having a (user) issue with the Beta (26b). I just installed it and when I try to open the game, I get the error message "unable to find PW data". Any clue on how to fix this? Thanks!

Mike,

There's been a bunch of these reports over the last few years. Whether Beta or not, it's always an installation problem of some kind. Don't know the cause, but...

Make certain the game did not get installed somewhere under the 'Programs' or 'Programs (x86)' folders. That messes up everything.

If you are running the Beta, beware of one difference in the shortcut. For the Beta, the executable is in the Beta2 sub-folder, but the 'start in' of the shortcut must point to the regular AE folder. Here is a pic of one of my Beta shortcuts where I have scrolled the two lines so you can see the difference.

Ok, I fixed that and the game opens, but it's showing version 24, not 26b. What I had done was to create another AE install and add the beta to that one. Does the shortcut itself need to be in the Beta 2 folder or the main folder?

In the spirit of teaching to fish:

The 'Target' is the executable you are starting.

The 'Start in' is where the OS will tell Target that it is starting. If nothing is specified the default is where the program (aka Target) is located.

Using AE as (a most relevant!) example, when not using the Beta the 'Start in' field is empty, so AE.exe (forgive the abbreviation) will start up and look for any files (or sub-folders) it wants in its own location. As you know the 3 pwhex files are located in the same place as AE.exe, and so it finds them.

When running a Beta, the Target is located in a different place from the files and folders it wants to use, so we must "tell it" where to find them We do that by filling in the 'Start in' field in the shortcut.

The answer to your question "Does the shortcut itself need to be in the Beta 2 folder or the main folder? ", provided I am interpreting the question correctly, is "anywhere you want". I keep my AE shortcuts inside a folder which sits on my desktop. The shortcut is meant to live anyplace you find convenient. The key is that, as explained above, each shortcut contains the information about where to find the program and where the program should find its files. That allows the shortcut to live anywhere you want.

On the main screen in the upper right, will you see v24 or v26b?

Ok, I found this:

It will create a directory Beta2 off the main AE install directory, install the updated EXE and DLL, and create a shortcut on desktop to run AE from that new directory.
Note that only the basic options are used with the shortcut. Copy the shortcut and add your preferred options to the command line such as screen size.

Where do you find them and where do you install them? (I am totally out of my element.)

In this case fish was a verb, but in your case...

I'm always worried if I give a man a fish he will eat for a day,
but if I teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Yep, patch with the official patch first. I recently reinstalled WITP:AE, skipped the official patch and updated with the beta. The official patch introduced some visual cues on map like yellow an red exclamation marks. You will miss those when you install beta over vanilla.

Using the latest beta in scen 100. The bug about minelayers in Escort TFs reverting to Minelaying TF when in transit still persists. It also applies to TFs with ACMs travelling to ports that need minefield tending.
