It could be too much for me to deal with all at once too!

At the time they quipped the invasion of Guadalcanal should be code named operation Shoestring, and that applies double to this op.

How about Operation Threadbare instead?

I was thinking "Shoeless Joe", meaning there isn't even a Shoestring.

I almost always wear shoes due to missing parts . . .

Besides, this is not baseball. If he is attacking multiple bases as if he is trying to throw a blanket over everything, it may not be able to cover it all due to lack of assets hence it is threadbare.

I already decided on an op name but was waiting to reveal it.

Cantankerous Olfactory

Operation CO, PERFECT! blame built right into the name. Sorry about not elaborating on SST, yes, sub transport, oft neglected
mode of transport available. Just a thought when something looks like a free grab.

I did the conversions to those 3 subs so they are ready to go. Both before and after conversions they ferried Supply to Horn Island and later Darwin. Three Raider Bns will be on Roi-Namur, so the SST's will be perfect for taking them to seize unoccupied bases.

Joe's idea for the paras can be used for either empty or occupied bases, provided they aren't much occupied (as the para forces available are small).

One of those odd coincidences - I was thinking Shoeless Joe before you posted and it never occurred to me that your post name is Range Joe, so I was not trying to play on your name! The link was the word Shoe. And I should have mentioned that I though Threadbare was pretty good too.

Having trouble with Cantankerous Olfactory though - us old cantankerous types have almost no olfactory sense any more ...

Shoeless Joe would be fine if he were trying to take one base at a time. Shoeless Joe for a paratrooper attack on a marginally defended base would be fine since it would be trying to steal that base against a distracted player. A threadbare blanket or cloth would try to cover everything but might not be able to.

But I do have a tenuous connection with Shoeless Joe due to Doc Graham.

If you can, try to buy out those VLG-III Sup Afd units, or at least one of the smaller ones that combine into larger ones and get them out of the DEI. Having more air support units, even the small ones, to spread around can be quite useful and they should not cost too much.

If you transport air units by rail on Java between two cities that will have the rail lines cut and then the starting base captured, they will be stuck during transport and never get to a base. That accidentally happened to me during one game and they were still in the queue until I rescued them by recapturing a base.

I did last game but not this game. I might buy back the destroyed units if I can be certain of where they will come back (don't want them stuck in queue waiting for the liberation of Java).

I solved that problem: I only have one base on Java!

If I remember correctly, the units bought back will come in at Aden along with any other Dutch reinforcements.

If they have taken damage, they might be cheap enough to buy out now and get just part of them to Australia where they can rebuild and be used to host training/rear echelon squadrons at already built up bases.

Dutch units will arrive in Aden. But screen them before buying out, since replacements only exist for generic squads like (air)support or engineers. Many of the airbases have tiny TOEs and are hardly worth reviving, infantry is not worth it at all IMHO.

INVADED
Batavia, Changsha are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall
• No carrier sightings.

• SoPac Area HQ has arrived at Pearl Harbor and will be transported to Pago Pago as resources allow with upcoming Cantankerous Olfactory.

• I am looking for preparation targets for the USA 160 Inf Rgt, 185 Inf Rgt, and 41 Inf Div. The two Rgts are part of the 40th Inf Div, the other Rgt of which will invade Roi-Namur with other units. I have enough PP to buy out one Inf Rgt now but will have to accumulate PP for the other one and the division; I could also wait and buy the division first. I'm thinking over Nauru or Ponape for the division, although Ponape might require more than a single division, and Marcus for the two regiments. In 4 days the USMC 22 Rgt arrives, and in 14 days the USMC 3 Div. After then no significant US infantry for a couple of months.

• Lexington's TB group upgraded to Avenger's. We should have time to upgrade Yorktown's group but Hornet and Wasp might have to sail with Devastator's.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Enemy sub activity near Pearl Harbor.

• The various convoys all have no contact.

Pacific
• Enemy sub activity near Pago Pago.

• More activity.
quote:

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Enemy sub activity near Portsea, Brisbane, Belep Islands, Aoba Island,

• Fuel unloading at Melbourne; Fuel unloading at Sydney.

• Alice Springs airfield is size 3.

• Still no contact with Imperial ground units. Supply is hard to come by at the forward positions.

Philippines

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• Small victories.

(7 plane(s) diverted to support CAP in hex.)
7 plane(s) intercepting now.
Group patrol altitude is 9000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 9000.
Raid is overhead

On ground attack they shot down an interceptor!

China
• Worrying odds.

Defending units:
57th Chinese Corps
61st Chinese Corps
12th Chinese Corps
9th Chinese Corps
16th Chinese Corps
4th Chinese Cavalry Corps
115th Red Chinese Division

It's hard to tell what units participated in the attack, something which I would love to see in combat reports. In cases like this it matters a great deal.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• Enemy sub activity near Karachi.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

Thanks, guys. I am not sure when I will spring PP for those units. I'm a little in a hole PP-wise because I bought out all those Chinese Army units. BTW they are well over 1,300 AV at Ledo right now.

They were probably being chased down low, dropped their bombs just anywhere and the resulting blast destroyed the enemy plane. The rest got scared by this new weapon and left. Or else the LCUs AA fire actually got the fighter since friendly fire is always more accurate than enemy fire. Since the game can't model these, it showed what it could.

In a turn last night in my game, 13 Devastators got 13 bomb hits dropping from 1000 feet, 30 squads destroyed on that xAK so they can do good work, they just don't have the range.

possible to slide another corp into that stack next to Sian, just to screw with his math? On the other hand I decided to take a slow
combat mode retreat from a similar situation hoping to buy some time in the woods.

Not much use to the carrier performing like this...

possible to slide another corp into that stack next to Sian, just to screw with his math? On the other hand I decided to take a slow
combat mode retreat from a similar situation hoping to buy some time in the woods.

The cupboard is bare. If he knew almost all the units recovering in Sian are in Rest mode he could jump the river without a fuss and really complicate things.

Well, think of this collision:

quote:

The Glowworm smashed into the side of the German ship, just aft of her anchors. The destroyer’s bow was wrecked as she ripped a massive gash in the side of the much larger cruiser. The German ship took on tons of water, but eventually isolated the damage, and prevented a total flooding. The Glowworm drifted away, a sinking, burning inferno.

The Admiral Hipper fired another salvo, at close range into the destroyer, and a single gun responded. Chief Petty Officer Walter Scott, despite his ship sinking rapidly, stood by his gun and had fired one final round before the boilers exploded at 1024. She sank soon after.

Very interesting. Some crazy images on the Glowworm's wiki page. Shame only 36 survived out of 146.

Forgot to mention: a bunch of AK at Pearl Harbor have 11 days remaining in their upgrades so that's a hard lower limit on when I can start loading. The two battleships upgrading at San Francisco will be done in a few days and head for Hawaii along with the coming USMC Rgt and the additional AE's and AKE's. One battleship upgrading at Pearl Harbor needs close to 3 weeks and will be the straggler if external conditions allow the operation to commence ASAP.

At least the Ward and Stack ran into each other instead of colliding with the carrier. Could have been worse.

You mean like the Cruiser Belknap CG26 did to the JFK in the med, 22 Nov 1975?

Your AAR is once again thoughtful and insightful at the same time.

You have yet to mention your mastrokova plan; we know you did the beginner course at VladPutinU 101

If the biggest fear/threat is:

1) KB1 at Truk and
2) KB2 is likely down at Balikipan or DEI / Australia ~

..for arguments sake... are you launching an offensive in Burma? Responding in Australia clearly but assigning a 'misdirection' squadron of USAAF 5th in Australia to support ?

Thanks!

For greatest distraction I was thinking about holding an international press conference and behaving really stupidly...

I really can't do anything in Burma just yet, but I doubt any advance into Burma would cause KB1 to respond anyway. I do have both some US ground troops and plenty of US aircraft in Australia. Cloncurry is building pretty fast and, at size 4, I am willing to use it now for B17's; Just waiting for the Imperial troops to appear.

I think I so little to make a credible decoy operation that any such op would be immediately seen as a decoy. If I am right about that, the best misdirection is simply to show up. In the absence of any obvious ploy by me KB1 might just be somewhere else's as part of the Empire's own plans.
