Status: offline 		I'm getting really tired of buying stuff and finding out it's Chinese made. It either arrives defective or breaks down within a year. There used to be a law that you had to say up front where something was made. What happened to that law? I once bought some sewing needles at Jo-Ann that were Chinese. Every single one broke when you put some thread through it and pulled. I went back and got some Czech made needles and you couldn't ask for anything better. Is there a place other than Amazon where you can buy stuff knowing up front where it was made? The Chinese put European names on their products to make them sound legitimate, but they're not.

Status: offline 		This from the illiterate Chinese. I didn't respond to them but if I had it would be along the lines of: "No I don't want a defective clock to replace the defective clock you sent me. I want to get a clock from someone who makes clocks that aren't defective."

Status: offline 		Send a letter to Jo-Ann fabrics headquarters to let them know about the problem and your solution of reconsidering your shopping there. Do your research to find out what companies don't make things in China - but that is difficult. Many components are Chinese made.

There is a key phrase in that letter where they will welcome your suggestions - take advantage of it and tell them what to do with their defective clock!

I think the country labeling law/regulation was dropped during the Bush admin. after lobbyists for importers spoke to the Administration in their usual generous manner.

Bear in mind that China went so far as to manufacture substandard bolts and fittings for aircraft that led to the crash of at least one large jet. They provided all the fake certification and markings to say the parts met standards but tests showed they were as little as half the strength required by the standard. After the NTSB made their report the whole Aircraft manufacturing and maintenance industry did a review and found the faulty parts everywhere, including Air Force One!

I have a deep suspicion about buying the cheapest version of anything. I gladly paid the higher price for imported cars when North American made ones were horribly unreliable/quick to wear out/shoddily made. Never regretted the choice.

Remember the days when "Made in Japan" meant the stuff was crap? Then a change occurred. Japanese mfg. decided they wanted that to mean the same thing as "Made in Germany" and the "This is Crap" designation migrated to Hong Kong. Nothing lasts forever, Takata has taken the sheen off of "Made in Japan" and Mercedes and VW have as well for the "Made in Germany" brand.

I have hand tools made in Germany and made in Japan that are superb. Japanese saws are as unique as they are functional. Canada and the US are also showing quality, in making some of the older tools and newer designs.

R.E. Dietz Company was a lighting products manufacturer. They are best known for hot blast and cold blast kerosene lanterns. The company started in 1840 when its founder, 22-year-old Robert E. Dietz purchased a Lamp & Oil business in Brooklyn, New York. Robert Edwin Dietz first began selling whale oil and camphene lamps and lanterns in 1840 at the age of 22. Robert and his brother Michael patented the first practical flat wick burner especially designed for the then new fuel oil, kerosene, in 1859.


Moved to China in the 1950s


My favorite is - Dietz No. 80 Hurricane Lantern.

Further in many many industries such as the Auto Industry all the "quality parts" are subcontracted. So the water pump in a Ford / GM / Toyota / Volkswagen is actually the same part manufactured by "i.e. Magna International - somewhere". Ergo a Collision Airbag recall affects multiple brands of cars.

This is equally true in almost all durable goods. Fridges, Wood Planes, Tools, Stoves... you name it. Electronics perhaps less so where a few large factories in China South Korea Indonesia dominate the market and 'multi brand'.

One exception to the rule.

English Cuisine.

The English have been unable to manufacture a cuisine since the time of Victoria the 1st.

The major impetus - to expanded into an Empire that included Hong Kong, India, the Caribbean, and the Middle East merely to import a good cuisine.
