More social media and direct chat (Discord etc.) has killed a bit the forums everywhere overall. Alot of people just don´t even bother to say (post) anything. They take what they need and run without even a thank you...

Is that over 150,000 users on the forum in one day? That seems like 10-15 times too much. I read this everyday, still the best

I sit here watching TV and I check the site constantly, the news gets quite depressing.

Users online at any given time fluctuates greatly based on game releases. If that 150,000+ is correct, that must have been right before a big release.

I've always thought that 150689 users online figure to be bogus, a forum glitch. Kind of like Warspite Found!

I believe the most members (including me) online at one time was (understandably) when War in the East was released. I don't know where that huge number came from, nor do I care

I'm not sure I would consider close to 10,000 visitors a day as a dieing forum. The number of people interested in these games are low to begin with.
My comments have dwindled over the years but, I look at this forum daily. I'm sure the majority just have nothing to say. I'd say a lower number is good, because most people just post to complain about something. This is a wargame forum, and our topics are limited, not many nongame related posts are allowed. IMHO

I drop in, look at the forums to see if there is anything I find interesting.
But earlier I did AARs, which I am not anymore, part of that is that I have not found a game since WitE that I have enjoyed to the degree that I feel like doing a Pbem and an AAR, so that reduces the ammount of time I spend here.

Also, since the "so called merge" with the Slitherine forum, the games are discussed there instead of here (although I much prefer the coulour and layout of Matrix over Slitherine tbh).

Forums always have a base that sticks around who are active, it will have many lurkers of which some might join to say a word and some of them stay many go.

I do find myself looking about without logging in much, I only do so when I'm posting something.

Check the server logs - a lot of times when there are big spikes like that, there's either (1) a surge in attempted spammer registrations, or (2) a lot of spiders crawling the site to re-index for a search engine or archive site.

I think this number had artificial increase but it's interesting that an unprove number did many comments.

What this forum (general) offers a top the page is "My forums", try selecting that to see the 5 latest posts from all the sub-forums (including general). There's an incredibal amount of activity going on there, some of which could be enlightening to you. There is posters (sub-forums) that rarely, if ever post here, none-the-less are prolific posters. I would'nt put the weight of this forum just on General Discussions, although at times it could be better.. And by the way: This forum's format is the best imho.

I thought this would morph into a "Is wargaming dying?" thread.

There's some good wargaming groups on FB - that may be pulling some away.

I've witnessed many who posted here no longer do so. Too bad, lost a lot of good posters through time..

There is no doubt that there are many more options for interaction on the 'net than in the past, and that diffusion is of course going to touch the forums here. That said, it varies wildly by game and topic. See: WitP:AE

Cheers

Bottom line to answer the original question is the forum is not dying and to answer the tangent above, Matrix is not dying. However, forum activity fluctuates greatly with releases and some sub-forums have always been much more active than others. Also, the increased use of facebook groups and similar discussion options does pull some folks away from the forums. We have no plan to get rid of the forum and will continue to see this as the primary place to discuss our games and share our interests.
