So me and gorzag took a rematch. The last one I surrendered due to heavy losses. Gorzag ambushed my cruiser troop with flamethrower tanks and that ended my attack.

This time the battle is much bigger. It is 5000(uk) vs 8000(ge) point assault, three air sections, me 15% arty (attacker), gorzag 10% arty. Battle length is whopping 60 turns.

8000 points of units is more that I have ever seen in a game. So just the buying and deploying the whole bunch was a big task. We have played three rounds so far. Due to positive feedback (Thanks sandman20!), we decided to make another report of the match.

----------------------------------------------------

Somewhere in the defensive positions of uk troops...

"Prvt. Smith was trying to get some sleep before dawn. But all he could do, was asking himself what the hell is he doing here.
'....Sh**! Not so long ago, I was working in a quiet Liverpool and all of the sudden here I am. In the middle of France freezing my b*** off, waiting for some german bastards trying to get to Paris.... Why stop them anyway? I'd go to Paris myslef. All the time in France and I didn't even get to see this Eiffel tower..... I could hardly see anything in France couse this stupid pot helmet is blocking all the view. They gave me one too big... Wish my mates were here with a couple of pints... Ahh, better if they don't see me wearing this stupid pot anyway... What's the noise? Maybe cook is bringing some sh*** army breakfast? I'm starving... Nah, this are our planes going back from some useless bombing run. Why they fly so low? What a piece of junk!
They can hardly fly anyway. Oh! This one just lost some parts.... Holy sh**!!! Take cover! Bombs!!!'"

----------------------------------------------------
In the meantime on the german side of the area.

"Someone shouted: Achtung! Airplanes! And everybody started to look at the sky. AA guns were mounted if the men had fast enough legs. Three of them total. Bombs hitting here and there. "We got one!" was heard and everybody cheered. One poor Sturm Staffel halftrack caught the attention of the last
plane and was hit pretty bad, luckily the squad survived the blast, but they were now on foot.

Then there were the thundering blasts of enemy artillery random at our apporach, it had some effect, psychological if nothing else.

Coloner orderd smoke missions to cover the assault and told recon units to move forward as fast as they could. The proud and brave kubelwagen drivers slammed the gas and rolled away. First of them suddenly just blew up in the air! But others followed and found the enemy Vickers. That was the end of his story. Motorcycle squad stumbled upon an enemy crusader and two
other guns. Our 88m flak AT took care of that but, we could not take the guns out.

Colonel listened first recon reports. Some contacts with enemy, two enemy tanks down. We lost some kubelwagens. "Good", said Colonel, "Keep going!"

-------------------------------------------------------

After a while. Back in uk positions.

""In some other part of the field Prvt. McKenzie was franticaly trying to hide deeper in his foxhole '...German artilery!...Incoming!...Take cover!.... :::Loud explosion
nearby::: ...I'm hit!...I can't see, I got blind!.......They got me... I
don't wanna die still a virgin......... Wait a minute..... I'm not blind. I
just can't see through all the smoke..... German fired heaps of smoke on our lines, some of it even behind our lines...... That's not so bad. I can't see them, but they also can't see me, right?... That's not so bad..... Some scouts fire at each other, but so far no serious attack... What is Sergant shouting?... Why change positions? I like my foxhole... What an a** hole!...'"

------------------------------------------------------

Germans are advancing, totally unaware of the hassle in uk lines.

"We've lost a tank and a halftrack to enemy plane.", 1Lt reported. "Tell the AA-guns to be ready for some more action.", Colonel replied calmly.

The assault went on on its own track and there was nothing that could stop it. Except for that **** swamp with a little stream across it, it sucked halftracks and armor like quicksand. Colonel didn't want to risk his AFV's to be clustered on the bridges and he had ordered to cross the stream also in other places.

The smoke screen was doing its job. So far advancing troops had received only occasional potshots. What colonel wished was that the advance would've moved faster, forward troops were about 500-700 meters from suspected enemy lines."

-------------------------------------------------

UK troops get impatient.

"Somewhere inside a battle-ready Matilda tank Lt.Wilkinson was trying to contact HQ:
'No sir, we can't see them through the smoke.... But how do you want me to shoot at them, sir?! I can't see a barrel of my gun, not to mention those bloody germans.....My tankers are getingt a bit impatient, sir. They want some action.... Yes, I know they are new and haven't seen a real fight yet, but.... So what are the orders sir? Shall we just sity here and wait for them to attack when and how they want?.... Really? I can?... That's good
sir, thank you....'::To his crew:: 'Finally this old @*&%&^ made some decision. Inform rest of the company that we're moving out. I'm not going to sit here and just wait for them. Forward!'"

-------------------------------------------------

First real contacts with the enemy.

"Reports from the spearhead of the assault. "Enemy moved
out of defensive positions trying to meet us at their own terms but we fragged already two enemy tanks. We lost two halftracks, the **** mortars didn't shoot the smoke in time and the whole company was caught in the open. Smoke missions are now complete and we can proceed." Luckily the tanks were easy targets as they emerged from the smoke screen that was
thick as a London fog. "Those brits must feel at home in there", chuckled the forward observer as he was ordering more fire missions on the area. Enemy had a pillbox covering the sector of our approach but the smoke screen blocked its vision very good. The assault was proceeding as planned.

Meanwhile in the back lines. Troops were moved to different grouping locations to avoid enemy artillery and airstrikes. "Achtung!" the alert sounded and loud crackling of AA fire from various guns filled the whole area. This time the AA fire that met the approacing lone airplane was more concentrated and we managed to score some hits just when the plane
was about to drop its load. Colonel sighed of relief, "Relocate again!", sounded the short order."

-------------------------------------------------

Stay tuned, more action to follow in this exciting series...

Thanks again gorzag and mandreads!;)
That was very enjoyable part again, specially I liked the section, where Pvt. McKenzie tried to dig deeper to the foxhole.:D LOL

I'm personally so poor in English and poor writer as well, that I enjoy a lot when someone writes good AAR's as you guys.

Thanks a lot, I'll stay tuned:)

One turn played and here is what we've been up to.

In the british bunkers...

"Ltn. was shouting into a speaker: '...Fire all you've got!...They just got out of their halftracks and crowd near our bunkers.... There're at least two platoons of infantry all bunched together!.... In all the smoke they fired, we just need some fresh meat and
we'll have smoked wursts.... Don't worry about my troopers. We have plenty of cover in here. It's close, but it'll hurt them more than us.....'

In the meantime in the battalion HQ:
'How long before our Matildas reach this small bridge?...That might be too long. Hurry them up. Germans spotted them, but they don't have anything to stop our tanks. They've send everything North, so we can easily attack their back. Proceed with counterattack as planned' 'Sir, we got first prisoners. Some of their scouts surrendered to our tankers. Shall we bring them in?' 'No, there's no need to hurry with interogation. We already know what's their plan. Just bring me some tea.'"

(I have to comment on that one: The "surrendered scouts" were remaining part of cavalry squad that was overrun by Crusader mkIV, and the cavalry cowered under attack.)

--------------------------------------------------------

At the same time the germans keep coming.

"Colonel was listening to various reports from the front. Advancing troops report casualties due to heavy 25pdr bombing all the time. Enemy armor units met our forces in the field before the village, we managed to destroy a total of six of them. One unbelievably hard Cruiser mkIV is hanging in there. Also at least two Matilda II's remain. Our casualties are few halftracks and one tank.

Supporting tank troop are in position by the riverbank, infantry is grouping on the hill north of village. We are getting ready for last push towards the village, right after some bunker busting. Colonel ordered the tanks to move forward for close support for the infantry entering in the town.

1Lt brought in a report of one of the snipers in the area. "Enemy is moving a lot of Matildas into our flank, six at least. They will be in firing range in a few moments". Colonel waved another 1Lt near him and whispered something to him and 1Lt went off running."

(Now I can say, the 1Lt that ran away ordered some airstrikes on flanking Matildas, but all of them survived.)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Coming up next: Will the Gerries be able bust the MG bunker and a pillbox? Will the flanking Matildas wreack havoc in the flank of german assault?

All this, and more, coming up... in this same forum, in this same thread.

One turn played. We decided to slow the pace down. In any case this will last long.

-----------------------------------------------------

In the british defense lines...

"Desperate cry for help was heard on all radio frequences used by british tankers:
'...There's a lot of infantry in front of me.... I need some back up..... There! There! On the left! Fire! Fire! They have flamethrower!..... We're not burning yet..... ::A lot of MG fire can be heard in the background:: ....We are running low on ammo to our MG's.... Here they come again!.... Look at Smith's tank!.... They have blown it into pieces.... Lots SS is crawling all over it..... Just like ants.... We need help, we won't hold them much longer.... Somebody help us!.... We can't stop them... I see them
coming again.... We won't stop them now....Tell my wife that I loved her.....' ::Suddenly some other voice can be heard ont he same frequency:: 'Shut up and die like a man!'"

-------------------------------------------------------

Right after that in german frontline...

"A brief moment of the forward troops:
The smoke in the field was burning pvt Henkels eyes as he jumped out of the halftrack. He couldn't see a **** thing. There were screaming, firing and eplosions all around, it was a chaos, hell on earth. Actually the place didn't even look like earth at all. Huge explosions blasted his ears as heavy 25pdr artillery shells shook the ground nearby. Cpl of his squad ordered them to assault an enemy position in front of them. Pvt Henkel couldn't even figure which way was front because the smoke was so thick. They just dived out of the halftrack and went to ground and started shooting. Enemy was really close. Gunshots filled the air and everywhere were muzzle flashes of rifles and machine guns. The enemy started to leave their positions and pvt Henkels squad quickly ran back in to their halftrack. The halftrack machine guns were blazing as they slowly moved towards the deserted enemy foxholes.

Germans managed to dislodge a half of a rifle company defending north side of the village. The other half has not been spotted yet.

In the relative peace of back lines colonel looked worried. The matilda II's are getting close. When they pass the smoke screen they will have clear field of fire on the flank of our advance. The assault was going as planned, our casualties so far: several recon cars, about six halftracks, four panzers. Enemy casualties: 12 armored fighting vehicles, mainly Cruisers and Matildas."

To prevent this from sunking too deep into the forum here's an update of the events...

British are pondering what to do...

"It was very quiet in the battalion HQ. Only colonel was talking to himself while looking through binoculars:
'So, B company is almost wiped out..... There were supposed to hold northern flank and stay in the small village. But no, what they do instead? They just run away or die...... That's not what they're supposed to do! No one is allowed to die without order!.... Traitors!....Matilda platoon was late....
As always.... Let's just hope that they help to hold our positions on the middle hills.... We'd better prepare for germans in there... I guess I need to make some bright decision right now.... One of those that change course of a battle.... Like Wellington or Cesar before me.... But what?.... I need a tea..."
------------------------------------------------------------

Germans already know what to do, but they seem a little puzzled too...

"Colonel was watching the battlefield. The assault seemed to lose momentum but the primary goal was almost achieved. Germans were chasing the british infantry out of the town and SS troops were setting up a defense perimeter to repel the possible counter attack.

1Lt Dittrich ran to the colonel and tried to catch breath: "I just heard the latest recon reports... You have to call the men back... those Matilda II's seem like they are going in for some serious action. There is at least ten tanks approaching the village from different angles!" Colonel looked at Dittrich and said quietly: "Who is commander of this kampfgruppe.. you or me?

Colonel had already seen the situation. The enemy must've mobilized a majority of his armor on this counter attack. "If we manage to pull this one off we are way ahead of the enemy."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think next three turns will set the course of the battle. I think next turn the matildas will move into the firing position or the smokes will vanish so that they can shoot through. Theres only like 10 hexes between my forces and gorzags forces. Only smoke between, clear terrain.

A little different perspective on the battle...

"About 50 years later colonel was giving an interview to some yank writer. 'So you want to write a book "The Group of Brothers" about our battalion? Good choice. We were the best British Army had in WWII. The best example was during French campaign in 1940. We were defending some small town in northern France.

Germans wanted the town badly, couse through the town led
main supply route for whole expeditionary force. But we were in the way. They have a lot of SS and tanks. Plenty of tanks. This was the first real battle that we fought as a single battalion. It made us what we were later.

In the morning Germans dropped smoke and attacked our left flank. B company, that was holding some small village, had to fall back. German commander than pushed his forces forward, through the buildings. And that was his mistake. Our infantry were not everyday man.

Under constant mortar fire, B company rallied and counterattacked. In the meantime I sent some of our Mtildas and elements oc C comapny for help. German tanks were trapped. They did not destroy whole B comapny so they were still in the village, our tanks started to blow germans PzKvIIs and fresh C company threatened to souround their lead tanks. These were deciding moments of the battle......'"

German troops kept pushing through the smoke and constant artillery. Couple of halftracks were lost some men went down, some men as a casualties of an accident.

One SS squad dismounted the halftrack to assault a AT-gun inside a village. They moved in position forward of the halftrack. They took good positions and opened fire. Then the halftrack driver noticed that the squad had moved forward and he decided to follow. He crashed into the building and it collapsed on top of the squad, more than half of the squad was lost.

The british commander is remembering the past. Continued from the last british report.

"Colonel continued his story:
The fight for this small village was very bloody. Wish that I remembered the village name.... I'm getting too old.... Anyway, my soldiers still were holding some buildings on one side of the road, while they stayed in the builidgs on the other side. No one tried to attack, as it was almost suicidal. We were just pounding each other with arty. We with 25 pounders, they with their 81mm mortars. And than right in through the middle of the village goes our Matildas. Not just one, but whole platoon! What a mess they
did. Bang, there goes PzII in flames, bang there goes halftrack. They sure did lots of good job. What a sight.... But I didn't know that they still had some infantry in the village and some flamers too.... At the same time germans tried some attack on our right flank. But something didn't work right, their smoke screen was late or something, so my boys were happily blowing their halftracks to pieces. The attack also didn't made any sense
than, as it was only one company of infantry, no tanks, no arty, no balls. Only later, after they managed to drop smoke, the things started to look worse....."

"At this dire moment colonel managed to pull off a slight smile. He
noticed that his SS troops managed to assault an matilda II and left it as a flaming wreck as they sped away in their halftrack. Just a moment before he saw another Matilda II take a hit from 88mm flakAT, the dreaded AT guns of the germans. Total of three matildas were rendered unoperable and one was very badly damaged after several hits from various AFVs.

The whole battlefield in front of the village was covered in thick smoke, no one could see the big picture what was going on in there. The village was compromised as the matilda platoon drove right in to the center of the village.

The assault in south was not such a big surprise after all, there were still a decent decensive force around, Colonel was disappointed at that, and he had to rethink the approach on that side. The smoke screen was late and air support was nowhere to be seen."

"British Colonel continued his story.
'So what at first looked like a great attack by our Matildas through the village, turned out to be disaster. There was supposed to be our infantry for A company as a support, but they got pinned by heavy mortar fire. Those german 81's were not a plesent thing. So five of my tanks were alone in the village, surrounded by geman engineers with flamers. I guess I don't have to tell you how it all ended. My tanks were blown to haven, one by one......'"

Some comments on this moment of the battle.

Thank you ladies and gentlemen for continued interest in this epic scale battle. The decisive turns for the control of the village has passed. Germans managed to pull of a very good defense for those Matilda II's.

I, german player, am now expecting some more casualties, the smoke screen is fading all too fast and I can't see those 3in cwt AA's so I can't go in and destroy them. I also think that the battle will change mode. First I tried to battle as close range as possible, that worked well. Several assaulted enemy tanks around. Now the middle hill is in the total open, I can't cover the whole hill in smoke so now the battle will be at longer range.

In this episode the destiny of british bunkers is revealed, also the terrible fate if the matilda platoon is brought out.

"German HQ officers cheered! The engineers had managed to blow up both northern hill emplacements. One log MG bunker first and just a moment after went the pillbox, it was the same FT squad that popped the bunkers.

Cheers were cut short as they saw an enemy airplane come in close. The plane didn't target them but they all hit the ground and shut up.

Colonel was trying to see what was going on in the village. He had seen a whole platoon of matilda II's to drive into the village. Colonel knew that his troops were securing the village and setting up a defense perimeter in there. A moment later he heard reports that of the platoon of four, infantry had destroyed two and immobilized two matildas.

Colonel was very pleased the way his troops had handled the surprise matildas, of the six that approached from south, five were rendered unusable and only one was still active. The smoke screen had faded just in time so that his tanks got good shots on them. Germans had nothing that could penetrate the armor of the "Queen of the Desert", but brits were eager to abandon the tanks when they were damaged.

The smoke screen that had covered the assault was fading and now there were more and more long range shots from various AA and AT guns, it was getting difficult to manouver in there. All vehicles increased speed to avoid getting caught in the open. Those 3in cwt AA's were real killers at long range.

HQ officers sat up and started gathering recon reports and planning next moves as they heard a truck approaching. It was a heavy truck approaching from a southern staging area, it was moving something to the village to aid in defense. They just glanced at the truck and suddenly there was a loud BANG! and the truck flew over and was left as a smoking wreck. Officers hit the ground again. It was one of those 3in cwt's. Now they all
knew to keep their heads down.

Southern attack was succesfully repelled by the british. Germans had to fall back and try to minimize the losses. Supporting planes in south dived in and bombed the area and got one more matilda II but it all was too late."

British commander keeps telling the great war story...

"The old colonel story continued:
The battle was at it's peak. Figth was really close and personal. We were fighitng their elite, SS, and it wasn't easy. But they really had to pay dearly for every inch of blood soaked land they have taken. I have seen many great things done that day. Every one of my soldiers was a hero. We were true soldiers of the British empire. True lions.... '. Old man kept talking rubbish like that for better part of an hour. The writer trying to understand any of this made only a short note: brits were losing the
battle."

Colonel was watching from a distance as his troops reorganized for another assault. The secondary objective was to storm the enemy defense lines along the big hill south of the village, those 3in 20cwt AA's posed too much threat to be ignored.

The rest of the matilda platoon of the village surrendered and one more matilda was assaulted succesfully. Field before the small village was littered with smoking wrecks of various armored fighting vehicles. The colonel counted quickly that little less than 30 enemy armored vehicles were destroyed or abandoned, while germans had lost 18 halftracks and 9 tanks. There were no clear picture how many men were down.

So far the primary objective was secured.

Hey gorzag!

If this is getting too frustrating why don't you order some reinforcements so that you have something else to do than just watch me mop up the infantry? (We agreed at start that no reinforcements)

To all the others interested:
The five hex vhex patch is secured in the village. The four hex patch in the northwest is secured. And the another four hex patch between the village and the big hill is secured. There remains one patch far south (that I tried to take by surpise) and the last one is far south and west.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

German troops had cleared the village and they were gathering wounded and partial squads. Engineers had set up a defense perimeter to secure the area. The village and the area west of the village was clear from the enemy. German tanks shot many ineffective shots at lone matilda and got one cruiser tank from their flank. Another crusader was also blown from a distance. Also enemy got many long range shots with those 2pdr AT-guns that are really difficult to see.

Germans had used airplanes to recon the hill area and some AT-gun positions were known. Colonel ordered airplane attacks and mortar fire to the general direction of the guns. Two planes flew over the area and the second one found one AT-gun but some of the crew survived.

Battle frontline turned to south towards the big hill that mounted 2pdr at guns and 3in 2cwt AA's.

Colonel put the binoculars down and sighed at the sight. He felt sorry for the poor british rifle squads that had to face such a terrible fate. There was clear terrain with only some smoke in the area. Germans had halftracks with men in them and some other armored fighting vehicles. The british troops just ran, they ran away from smoke and there was absolutely no cover to be found. Germans just followed with halftracks and blazed away at the enemy with the two AAMGs. Several squads dispersed and the men just tried to save themselves unable to put up any kind of fight.

There were some (about four, maybe five) enemy tanks remaining far south of the big hill and one at the east side of the hill. The lone matilda was at the west side of the hill.

Colonel was taking a breather. The battle was going smoothly and he was pretty sure that if nothing special happens he has beat the enemy. His thoughts were violently interrupted by terrible screams of incoming artillery. Huge explosions shook the gound and flew big piles of dirt into the air. Enemy 25pdr artillery had figured them out. The fire mission landed right on top of the german artillery formations. Gun crews hit the ground and tried to find some cover. The air thickened with smoke and sand. When the explosions paused every man manned their positions and luckily they suffered no casualties.

Mortar crews had fire missions to complete, they had just received orders to fire at some at gun positions. Orders were shouted and guns were directed as best as they could but the accuracy was something the colonel had never seen before.

Forward observer looked at the mortar strikes. Hits were scattered and some hits were like 200 meters off the target. Some missions didn't get a single hit at the target area. This was a minor setback in taking the hill.

So Gorzag declined my offer about the reinforcements. No report from him. I guess the british colonel is speechless in sight of his troops being overrun so badly.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Colonel and his team stopped running and they were trying to catch their breath. Artillery batteries started to aiming the guns. All of them were shaken by the sudden 25pdr artillery strike.

The troops in the front were advancing fast, they had made a big
flanking move. The problem wast that they had lost majority of their recon force. There had to be some AT-guns left, but to find them was another story.

Infantry in the front was mopping up the enemy squads and armor were mopping up the remaining lone matilta who had lost its main gun and was just a sitting duck in the vast field. A real bullet magnet.

There seemed to be some enemy armor left, but they were all too far to be engaged."

Another turn with no report from Gorzag. Can't really blame him, I know how he must feel...

Germans took control of the large middle hill and secured the vhexes far southwest (not yet but there are no one in defence). The remaining pocket of resistance is the vhex patch far south.

I think this battle was very fast. It is just turn 13 of 60 turn battle. Unless Gorzag has some very big surprise waiting somewhere I'd say that it is only a question of time when I get those.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Henschel airplane flew towards the british lines and spotted a 2pdr at gun on top of a small hill. It dived down and shot the at-gun with MGs. That initiated the german assault on the hill. Germans stormed the hill with very effective combined arms attack. First germans bombed the area with 150mm artillery. Then came in the halftracks with infantry aboard, followed closely by the tanks of various models.

The british had anticipated the assault of the hill and ordered 25pdr artillery to bomb the suspected advance path. The strike was too late. It didn't catch the main force, but only the supporting tanks that followed. One tank sure didn't know what hit him as it got a direct top hit from 25pdr shell.

On top of another hill german colonel was watching the massacre. This small moment had cost the british three 2pdr at-guns, three 3in CWT AA guns and at least a company of infantry.

The german front was pretty wide in the back of british lines, in the back of the area there was very little resistance for the advancing troops. Colonel looked at his watch, it seemed the battle was almost over and his paratroops were still very far from the area.

The colonel had ordered a plane to recon the last target area and it reported some AA-fire from the area. German SS troops staged for the last push.

The lone matilda in the back was abandoned and the crew was shot promptly."

Gorzag seems to have gave up on the whole DAR thing... I hope my DAR's encourage him to keep the morale...

""Colonel was still watching the sweep of the hill. There hung one
unbelievably tough Matilda II, if all matildas would've been that caliber the germans would have been annihilated. The matilda has survived several assaults, direct hits to hull and turret from front, side and even two direct close range shots to the rear. Colonel thought that there must be the only disciplined brit in there. All the british crewmen and rifle squads had dispersed, and in this moment the last two squads from the hill ran and dispersed.

In the small forest behind the hill Crusader tank was sitting in woods. The crusader didn't even bother to fire the guns at german armor that crested the hill just in front of it. It took some hits but finally it blew up.

German troops were gathering undisturbed for the last push to the target area.

Heavy artillery bombardment of the last target area continues based on the aerial recon few moments ago."

Gorzag decided to give up. I was out of town and Gorzag had a week to ponder about the decision. The game ended so that I found the lone british HQ and managed to move my units one hex away from last hex patch.

Gorzag congratulated me for a very good match. He liked (hated) especially the very effective smoke screen in the beginning and my 81mm mortars.

Last words from the front...

"Colonel was very pleased, the british troops suffered a crushing defeat, germans occupied the wrecked small village and also the supporting positions south of it. Germans suffered relatively small casualties.

The lone matilda still survived on the middle hill. Several failed assaults, several hits from behind... only to be immobilized."

I think Gorzag made two basic mistakes. His forces were in one front and spread to very wide area. His defence line was easily flanked. The other mistake was that he had too few at-guns.

Thank you Gorzag for very good match. This was the biggest match for me ever and easily the most fun, challenging, interesting etc.

Also thank you my dear reader for your interest. I hope you enjoyed this DAR. I sure enjoyed creating it for you.

Mandreads signing off... until next match.
