Hi Templer,

It's not something that's advised. I remember reading that Rommel did, in Barbarossa, have to pick up a gun and defend himself on several occasions but he had a tendency to move around a lot with a small mobile HQ element.

Cheers,
Cameron

This is a typical situation where there should be a combat bonus for the side that have a HQ involved in an attack or defence.
Otherwise it's usless to have a HQ to participate in battles.

Hi Mike,

Introducing the 'HQ Combat Modifier' which provides a bonus to combat depending on the distance the unit is from their HQ. Closer the better.

Manual, p125, 5.2.14.

Cheers,
Cameron

Hi Cameron

I know about that and thats fine but it's not the same as a commander participte in "person" in a fight, for example as many of the German commander did.
The HQ Combat Modifier portraits more how the HQ staff itself supports the units but my idea was also to use the benefit from the commanders themself and give the opertunity to bost the battle with the commanders abilitys when participating in a specific combat.

Cheers
Mike

Joining your HQ in the attack will at least supply the attacking side with some extra Troops.

But it is highly debated (for example by Kesselring) if Rommel was not doing more harm than good by leaving his HQs. Being in the frontline meant lines could get cut and thus quite often Rommel ended up being out of communication for all the other units under his command.

Best wishes,
Vic

Hi Vic

Many succesful commanders led operations from the front and left the headquarters from time to time to get direct information about the situations to give better orders to the subordinate units and faster. That is precisely why you have a headquarters staff to executes the orders that are decided so that the commander just does not have to stay at the HQ place all the time. You are correct that you run the risk of being cut off, but the benefits is better over the disadvantages.
As for Kesselring, he served most of his time in the air force and I think a commander in the army could judge this matter better, besides that Kesselring did not like Rommel because he did a bit like he wanted and then it is easy to criticize ....

Cheers

Mike
