I think I'm pretty grognardy but this one has me beat. I have played most of the Grigsby games from the beginning but have struggled to get into this one for some time. Partly it's my eyesight at 65 but mostly it's the complexity which overwhelming.

I'm going to try again with the small map scenarios but could someone recommend some dumbed down settings for me even if I sacrifice an edge by automating some of the factors to A.I.

Welcome to the forum.
The complexity of the game can be overwhelming and many of the veterans will tell you they are still learning things 5+ years into it. The point is you will never know it all, and it does take some effort to get to the point where you know enough to have fun - which hopefully is less than 10 hours. I cannot locate them today, but when I first started I found some videos on youtube of how to create a convoy, assign objective, get it loaded etc. Super basic stuff, but you need to know how to do the basics before you can do the fun stuff - like develop strategy and execute it. If you enjoy strategy, and can make peace with tons of clicking, and think that logistics are part of war, than you probably will enjoy the game as much as other Gary Grigsby games.

some quick tips from me:
- start a small scenario like Coral Sea (play is limited to a small area)
- play as allies
- make lots of mistakes and restart
- the forum is very active and people will help you if you ask
- read the manual

Some thing that can be automated:

-fighters on CAP missions. Best to use fighters with service rating 1. Rating 2 or 3 means that, over time, fighters on continous CAP missions will be overhauled for maintenance.
-Naval Search and ASW missions. Aircraft with low durability and service rating 1 can fly those missions for a very long time (the early biplane Stearman comes to mind)
-CS convoys can pick up supply, resources, fuel in an automated loop
-automatic sub missions can be handled by AI in the main game menu

If your eye hurts, drop the screen resolution to something like 1200x800 and use the mini-map to change locations.

Play 1000 Miles War Scenario. You have like 3 Air Units, and 15 ships. Barely enough to make 3 Task Forces. You won't need anything automated at that point.

Turn off your combat reports..They eat into the game like a starving rat in a room full of Limburger cheese!
(You can always go back and look at the reports manually after each turn if you wish.

I set my air combat times to "0" vs land targets and to the lowest settings for air vs ships...Also low settings on sub actions and lowest on land combat.

On my very first game...I started and restarted that "first" game maybe 10 times, because I kept learning new things...lol..
I was born in the forties, lol.
Many of us were.

It does take an effort to get up to speed with this game. As one has said here, it is a 'time vampire' of a game. If you're interested in the theater and enjoy this type of game the rewards for your effort will be great. Do as said above and you'll get where you want to be. Just don't expect that to be overnight. BTW, this game has the highest ROI of any I have ever played.

I believe there are some youtube videos that can step you thru parts of the game.

Finding a good AAR and reading it can also be very instructive.

The best tutorial is to find someone close to your skill level and play a few of the shorter scenarios until you get a feel of the basic combat elements. Play both sides of two or three games before even thinking about trying to win.

The game is deep, lots of detail and demands for attention.

I suggest you start an excel workbook where you can post links to threads and urls with your own shorthand summaries of what they contain. It takes years to learn the game.

Sadly it never happened.

However, there are a lot of resources on this site that you can read.

One to try is Sardaukar's Newbie Tutorial AAR for Newbies (vs. IJ AI)
