I get the value in training the Infantry / Artillery / Combat engineers up to the national max before committing them to combat - if circumstances allow. My question is - is there any value in training units like base forces and other "support" units that dont actually fight?

Second question is - is the national training levels (US army=60, marines=65 etc) still as specified in the manual or did a patch adjust them?

Support squads do fight, that is contribute to defensive AV, although at much reduced effectiveness compared to combat squads. In my opinion there is no real reason to train xp for them other than the perspective of siege. Mundane tasks like building or support look like not depending on xp levels. Can’t be 100% sure of course

Haha just remembering how much sappers love doing drill... as long as your training program includes beach landing site surveys with fishing rods and a ready supply of beers their morale shouldn’t drop

Non-combat engineers do not build as fast if their experience is very low (>30, AFAI can tell) or if their morale is low and fatigue is high. But most of the time they only need to improve their malus slightly and they perform much better. Example - I had some Indian engineers with 5 experience and about 10 morale who built nothing, so I put them in rest/training until their morale got to 20 and they finally produced a percentage point of progress. But it took quite a while to get experience raised to over 30 where their rate of construction seemed normal.

The type of training you refer to is really done 'under the hood', so there's no training to do anyway. When a unit is at a base and its 100% prepped for said base it'll train its experience up to its national level. It may even be just 100% prepped for any base, not exactly sure.

AFAIK the levels are as stated in the manual, there have been no changes in the patches of which I'm aware.

Edit:One other thing. I'm pretty sure that certain units with very low experience will train up a bit even before their prep is 100%
