Has anyone started creating regions for the game or tried to? I'm wondering how it is done or if there is a guide on it. I've looked into the files and I am looking to make some regions or attempt to.

I'm sure there will be guides coming up later. Right now I can say that the terrain palette is found in the game's 'docs' folder. There's an experimental map edit mode that can be enabled by opening the data\scenario\development.cfg file, and changing the line 'mapEditMode=0' to 'mapEditMode=1'.

I recommend to not edit the existing map files, but instead making editable copies of them first. After you've made a copy of the map files to a new folder, open the map.xml file and change the map ID. For example:

<string name="ID" value="fort_irwin_ntc" />

Change it to:

<string name="ID" value="my_map" />

All map IDs must be unique.

Once you've enabled the map edit mode, how do you access it?

It works automatically. You can't really play the game, but you can edit the map.

it's actually pretty self-explanatory, since there's text that pops up on the sides that lists the controls shortcuts.

Oh, you create a game, I got it. I was trying to find an option in the game menu.

Can you change height in the editor?

It doesn't seem to be listing all the various terrain types? Are there more commands or another menu? Like how do I add deep water? Dirt road?

No. The in game map editor is used to create the mask (terrain types,...), shapes (roads,...), locations (structures, buildings, names...)

The height is done via heightmap. You can create one using apps like L3DT, or use real world DEMs like srtm, aster, alos and post process it using apps like Global Mapper, QGIS, GRASS, SAGA, GIMP and Photoshop.

No secret there. You either draw/paint one from scratch or you use geo-referenced satellite imagery and export to .PNG in the same size as the heightmap.

AFAIK, roads are linear shapes. I think I saw something like 'Line objects' in the editor.

In the map editor mode, it lists different hotkeys for different terrain, but most of the terrain types aren't listed. For example, water. How do you place them? At one point, it was placing water, so I know it can be done - but what's the hotkey?

If you hover your mouse over a cell of a terrain type you want and right-click, then that is the new type you can place with a left click.

As you mention, most terrain types do not have hotkeys. In this case there needs to already exist that terrain type somewhere on the map.

It needs updating where all the terrain types have hotkeys.
