As long as the 3D is to scale I'm OK about it. Things like Panzer Korps with huge tanks isn't my thing at all.

Every so often I load up Steel Panthers 2 for a quick blast - it still stands up very well. Best is to pitch some advanced NATO tanks (Challenger 2s or M1A1s) against much larger numbers of Warsaw Pact T-72s or T-55s and let the slaughter begin!

You could be interested about WinSPMBT (Windows Steel Panthers Main Battle Tank). It is heavily modified version of SP2. They have also modded SP2 for Second World War (or World War 2) and it goes by name of WinSPWW2. Matrix Games has also made its own variation of Steel Panthers called Steel Panthers World at War, though it has some performance issues with multicore processors and Windows 7.

Graphically I'd certainly like to have an upgrade and think that 3D could work - but only if it keeps the same feel to the game, with hexes and the tension created by not knowing whether your next shot would kill the enemy.

Game engine is the same as in Battle Academy series. You can look up that game for reference. Presumably Steel Tigers will have detail and complexity close to Steel Panthers series and hopefully with hexes instead of squares.

It is not the BA game engine, but a customised flavour of the much more advanced Archon engine.

Cheers

Pip

Uuh... I thought Battle Academy was the first game with Archon engine. What is BA's engine called and is it used in other games like maybe Sengoku Jidai and Field of Glory 2?

[edit]
And are there any games made with Archon yet?

I cant wait to see it cos so far little Ive seen of anything made with the Archon engine seems to have the detail I imagine many want in STeel Tigers. So can't wait to see what this engine can do. Is it the same engine as Sanctus Reach? As Ive seen requests for that game that apparently aren't possible in engine and the requests are the kinds of thing I'd like to see in ST.

Saying this I think the ARchon engine is being used for the next Close Combat and that looks unlike anything made previously with said engine.

BA, BA2, P&S etc are all in the prior STUB engine.

Sanctus and FoG2 are both using Archon. CC:TBF and ST (as well as other games) also use Archon. Archon comes in a number of flavours customised for specific game genres.

Cheers

This is good news for Steel Tigers.

I still have hopes that one day the BA type of content / atmosphere will make it onto that engine.

I anticipate that Steel Tigers will be awesome and have a database of every type of boot worn from 41 - 45

but the story oriented / atmospheric role will not likely be filled by ST. ( I may be wrong on that - but it does not seem to be 2by3 style)

Buy Armored Brigade and fight Cold War in the meantime. A lot better than SP MBT.

Back in 2003 I played Steel Panthers totally to death. It was a great time, especially working with Wild Bill on Screaming Eagles.

This is 2018, and to be honest, I am unsure it will matter if Steel Tigers happens (for me at least).

I'm not getting any younger. I hardly play games let alone wargames any more.

If life is kind to me in 2019, I'll be getting married and the plan is to spend my time touring places I've never seen before. Generally England for honeymoon, and then a lot of Quebec.

Games are not as much a thing as they used to be for me. Likely the sitting in front of a computer is the problem. Joints ain't into it as much as they were 20 years ago.

I'm not sure where life is going to be taking a lot of you old guard types, you ain't getting any younger either :)
And today's youth, they likely ain't too big on our games.
I'm day dreaming of getting old, and painting landscapes a lot these days.

I'm sure Steel Tigers will show up soon enough. Not so sure the original fans of the experience will still be active though.
Steel Panthers graced our world in 1997 or thereabouts. That's 20 years ago. A lot of things can happen in 20 years. Some of us are not even alive still.

It's alive, kicking and in very active development. When we can talk about schedule or share more information, we will. Until then as no timeline has been announced, it is not late, ethereal or phantom.

Very interested in this game as well, can't wait for the announcements.

Also, please make the game at whatever scale it needs to be done for gameplay and UX's sake, don't listen to "hurr realism" people who ask things without thinking of the consequences and will be the first to complain they can't see their tanks under the trees.

The only two viable options are basically big models or icons when you zoom out or the unit is obscured by terrain or other objects - like in RUSE/Wargame/Steel Division from Eugen systems. But since the game will likely be hex-based, adapting unit scale and terrain details so they fit with the hex grid probably makes more sense. A hex grid simply layered over realistic terrain tends to look weird and streched/deformed. The key is reconciling the slightly abstracted terrain and unit scale with the need for the whole thing to look good in 3d... Steel Panthers looked good for its time despite those aspects, and still has its charm.

Yeah, you're kinda all over the place man.

I don't care if the game is the exact same as Steel Panthers as long as it's got a modern UI.

Keep on truckin' development team.
Many of us are excited to see the game.
I, for one, have patience.

I really don't like panzer general games but LOVE Steel Panthers (played since 90's). Though I bought Order Of Battle and it looks nice I really don't want play another Panzer General clone.

Do you use normal maps or dynamic LOD system in Archon engine? I really hope that we who are capable doing 3D graphics could do additional units and so on.
As a hobby 3D artist and avid SP gamer, I hope I could take a part in beta testing when it comes out. Hope it will happen as soon as possible.
