Anyone here know about this?
Is it 'legit' as in anyone know the background of this group?

Looks interesting. I am uncertain whether "Avalon Digital" is the online version of "Avalon Hill" or not. If yes, I wonder why a corporation cannot raise $35,000 by itself. If no, I wonder if the developers have started using the game design of AH games without permission. Since they say this is an upgrade to an existing digital game, it looks like they are legit.

I scanned the description and did not see anything about surface combats, which was a critical factor in the Guadalcanal campaign. If they do not have a naval battle surface combat model, I am not excited by the project.

I'm with you 100% regarding the lack of a surface combat aspect. I think the Slot engagements of that campaign would be a worthy premise for its own game.

Many AH games have been recreated here, sort of.

It says the game is already a success on Ipad... which for me is a red flag, phone games are typically simplistic

Oh that's GREAT!

If anyone here would like toplay of those beauties, I'm ready for it!

Edit: I mean: if the platform is really able to reproduce the original game.

The CRT shouldn't be a problem, since most of them used the same table. Roll 6 at 2-1, and you lose your entire force.
How does vassalengine compare to https://www.hexwar.com/ ?

IDK - I think VASSAL is more of a means to play the game over the computer, but not so much a computer game.

I.e. I have "Up Front" board game, and you have "Up Front" board game, so we both have the rules... VASSAL does all the things like "randomize the cards" and such, to play the game online against someone else.

Actually it is comparable to Flat Top or Carrier and even better with the use of computer

The magic is to have made a complex hex-and-counter wargame fit in a phone or tablet screen. Imagine how he could render on large PC screen with improved graphics using Unity

Controls are simple and intuitives but the game has real DEPTH and historical background

Hi, I never thought much of Avalon Hill games. Now if it was a go fund me for SPI I would sell blood.

+1 for SPI games.

Jim Dunnigan designed some of the late '60s and early '70s AH games (Jutland, 1914, Panzerblitz). Those are interesting.
I believe Hasbro (or a subsidiary) still owns the rights to AH games.

Always thought they had good ideas, but lacked finish.

Now if we talk Victory Games...

Tabletop Simulator on Steam, as well. Which I think is a bit more functional than Vassal.

I don't think it has anything to do with Avalon Hill

The games emphasizes Carriers (we are talking about carrier battles, right)
However surface actions are well present int he game and as you say quite important for the Guadalcanal campaign
You get torpedoes, gun fire, surface fire radar, surface radar and of course naval bombardment of airfields

Usually the Japanese have an davantage at night and will run at day to escape airstrikes from Guadalcanal

Hi, My introduction to war games. 1975(or 76) 3 day weekend Camp Lejeune. I am getting ready to go to NCO club. I go out of squad bay and in the hall are a bunch of maps on the deck and a Pvt setting up cardboard counters. It is War in Europe and he talks me into being Allies. 1978 my brother and I have the game set up on a large table taking up an entire room. After 5 or 6 turns we stop for the night. Someone leaves the door open. We have a cat.......

This is a computerized version of the old solitaire game Carrier by Victory Games. I have heard a lot of good things regarding this game on IPad, but have never played it myself.

thanks guys,

I have pitched in on a couple of games to help over time but only if I know some history on the group behind it after getting burned once.

The limited info from the demo looks like air sea fleet battles more than a longer campaign scenario. There is room for that kind of entertainment, especially on a tablet or phone based, but right now my 'slot' for that is taken up by playing Chess, Shogi and Go.

It might be a good entry program to get people interested in the Pacific War. I wish them success.

I'm tempted to pitch in but I'm leery of fraud. I need a little more reassurance that
they are legit. Does anyone know how to check into them?

Hey all,

To address their legitimacy...

They already have games out that are rather popular...

One of the members of the crew, Phillipe Thibaut, has been a part of games such as Europa Universalis, the AGEod collection including Birth of America, AGEOD's American Civil War, Pax Romana, Great Invasions, and World War I: lla Grande Guerre '14-'18.

You can look up his name in Wikipedia to find out more.

That alone should be enough to convince you... :)

I just tossed some coin onto the pile. I hope this game gets funded.

Cheers,

I'd be interested to play more on a tablet than desktop. I already have one very good desktop game, after all!

The site says the game takes between 1-3 hours. That is quick. Fun, maybe but quick. So depth in a turn based hex game that is such a short duration may not be possible. It also states it has ~80 "units" including CVs, planes, combat ships including the "lesser known" Fubuki-class destroyers!

I've played some battles recently that have 80 different types of units in one hex!

Well scenarios takes about 192 phases of 20 min each to complete
The game is a the tactical level and put the emphasize on the decision

As Pocket Tactics said, it does not take ages to mount a torpedo attack on an enemy fleet. Just drag and drop the air unit you would like to commit and watch the airstrip to be prepared, assembled to fly on the area you believe the target is
Combat os also automatized based on parameters you have decided before hand (will you concentrate on capital ships, do you want to spread your bombers to hot a maximum of ships)

You may play a scenario in an evening.
It will depends on your pace and if one of the side get shaved early in the game

Remember him from the AGEOD forums and the first AACW game in 2007. Good times.
