finland joined the axis without the axis doing diplo on it and without the trigger:

Axis forces have a unit within 1 hex of either Pskov or Polotsk, 4 hexes of Leningrad or Novgorod.

so how could have that happenned?

Hi

An Axis declaration of war on the USSR will trigger a pro-Axis Finland to join the Axis.

If the USSR declares war on the Axis then only an Axis advance to the condition positions would trigger a pro-Axis Finland to join the war.

On reviewing the Strategy Guide, I can see that this isn't mentioned so I'll add that for a future update.

Thanks

Bill

Bill,

Just playing a game against another human. Finland had pro-Allied leaning of 29% (if I remember correctly). Russia did not demand Finnish territory. Axis declared war on Russia.

And Finland *still* declared war on Russia once the Axis got within 4 hexes of Novgorod.

Is that a bug?

Tim

Hi Tim

I've checked the scripts and there are two scripts that could move Finland towards the Axis after the USSR joined the Allies:

A Soviet naval unit ending a turn just outside Helsinki could trigger a pro-Axis move on Finland's part, and therefore lead to them entering the war.

An Allied declaration of war on Sweden can also trigger Finland to move towards the Axis.

Hopefully it's one of those or more diplomacy? Because there are no other scripts that I can see that could do this.

Bill

Bill,

Ah, the naval unit outside Helsinki - completely random; sub ran into a German destroyer in the Baltic and ended up stopped next to Helsinki.
Resulting Finnish entry was quite unexpected. Oh well.

Is that listed in the regular scripts that players can turn on or off?

Tim

Yes it is, it's either a Mobilization_2 or 3 one (I can't remember which offhand, but one of those).
