I tried making a battle of britain one and I found the mechanics to be hard to work with - as in a german bomber had a greater chance of shooting down a spitfire than the spitfire had of downing the bomber - the bomber seemed to have better guns. Also, AAA was really good, probably too good from what I read.

I also figure with that era pilot tactics like attacking out of the sun were probably really important and I don't see anyway for the game to do that, or maybe the game can but I don't see how I can.

I would play around with whatever units you want to use and see how they do against each other before you actually start making a scenario. Hopefully it can be done though!

Yes, its quite a challenge. Many of the units aren't in the data base. I tried looking for the submarines of the IJN and they arent there. So this isnt going to be "accurate" per se, but it will be close. It requires more hands on of the player. CMANO wasnt intended for this type of match up anyhow, but it is still interesting! Thanks for the reply!

Yeah.. Command is really designed for warfare in the missile era and beyond. That's pretty much post-war, although I'm still surprised there's not any interest in MiG Alley sorts of scenarios set in the 1950s Korean War. It's kind of an interesting era with the transition from prop to jet aircraft going on.

Indeed! Its a great area to work on. There is so much to be garnered, maybe even great training "up" to the more modern missile based warfare!

Out of curiosity, I put together TAFFY 3 at Leyte Gulf and an a famous aerial attack on Rabaul when I first got into Command. Don't think they played that badly, but I was very new to the game. The OOBs were not 100%, but pretty close. But not close enough to add the scenarios to the Community Pack. I have not heard of anyone taking on Midway. I wouldn't be discouraged since tackling something that really interests you is a great way to learn the editor.

There was one scenario demonstrating Pearl Harbor attack. And another similar from movie where modern CV gets teleported to near PH just the time for attack.

I am working on one right now for the evacuation of Hungnam...
There are two problems to speak of...
1. The air support of land forces as the units withdraw.
2. Fighter versus bomber mechanic... it is okay but...

Another issue with World War II Pacific scenarios is that I am not sure there is a mechanic within CMANO for 'dive bombing' or 'skip bombing' which was far more accurate than just dropping bombs. So in World War II, technique is as important as the weaponry.

That's a great point. When every tactical aircraft has basically the same bomb sight, the differences are much more in how you do it. The same is true today (dive bomb? toss bomb? level bombing?) but with precision guided weapons, or possibly even advanced computerized bomb sights, one hopes to achieve much more uniform results.

gun-based air combat has a lot of nuances CMANO doesn't represent very well, also. now, i haven't tested every single conceivable matchup in a ~40s timeframe, but i would expect that you won't get the results you would expect as CMANO's close combat / turn fight AI doesn't exploit it's advantages it has in either angles or energy fighting correctly.
