In Belgrade, lawyers pore through the labyrinthine treaty agreements and debate what the implications of the following clauses will be.

- If the USSR hasn’t claimed Bessarabia:

- It cannot declare war on Rumania;
- Rumania can only align with Germany if Germany has declared war either on Yugoslavia or the USSR (not if the USSR has declared war on Germany), or if Germany controls Belgrade;
- Bulgaria can only align with Germany if Germany controls Belgrade or is at war with Greece; and
- Hungary can only align with Germany after Germany has declared war on Yugoslavia or the USSR.

Germany will be at war with Yugoslavia but won't have declared war. A literal translation would be Rumania and Bulgaria can now only align once Belgrade is controlled or Germany DoW's USSR. Hungary needs a German DoW on USSR. However, is that the official international (i.e. MWiF) interpretation? Time will tell (unless anyone more knowledgeable chips in). One thing is certain, control of Belgrade figures heavily.

I've just played the next Axis impulse through the DoW stages. Germany isn't being asked whether or not it wants to align any of the three. Looks like it is the literal interpretation.

My mistake re: alignments.

Taking Vienna (and with Bratislava sure to follow since the Germans can't rail in) will make the French adventure worth it, especially if they can hold them through Nov/Dec. It'll be easier since Germany can't yet align Hungary, so the path to Belgrade means either declaring war on Hungary to get into the plains or looping around through the mountains at Zagreb.

The proposed assault on the two key Polish cities has to take a back seat as the supply situation in Poland is now desperate.

The lead elements of two, hastily put together Panzergruppen, are started in Bohemia and Lower Silesia - but supporting infantry for both are thin on the ground.

The Japanese have a 5:1 attack against Chengchow (modified to a 4:1 by the weather) but with a +3.

HQ Support is ordered by Umezu.

I've assumed Assault as there is no retreat path.

HQ Support fails as a 9 is thrown
The land attack sees a 4(7) thrown. The Chinese lose one unit and the other two are Shattered. The Japanese are disorganised.

probably true of all translations to German, though I think the actual English expression would be "a bit of a sticky wicket there, eh?"

['Shattered' units that can't retreat are indeed destroyed automatically and moved to the Force Pools; the program could technically remove a little confusion by not even offering a convert-to-retreat option when there is no way to actually retreat. Similarly, there would be no need to select one unit to be the loss here and 2 units to Shatter and then be lost anyway. Anywhere an interaction point can be cut out of the play process is a good thing, this game has a near infinite amount of such already.]

S/O 39 Allied 9

No DoW or alignments.

Land: CW, China.
Combined: The rest except;
Pass: US

The French put a couple of light cruisers into the West Med 4-box.

Gort rails to Boulogne and IV MOT to Calais.

USSR rails INF from Odessa to Vilna.

For USSR, the Mongolian CAV continues it's trot. HQ and AT move into Vilna.

The Chinese CAV withdraws from its exposed position. Other elements of the army continue north. The Chungking MIL takes back Wanchow (probably temporarily).

For CW, XI MOT moves eastwards.

French 105mm moves to Billotte. Yugoslav CAV moves to Bratislava then back to Vienna. The III INF moves from Zagreb to the mountains NW.

No combat, rebase or reorg.

Turn continues on a 10.

The weather turns fine everywhere.

Declarations of War and Alignments: Germany declares war on Denmark. AllenK can you let me know the set up please or do you need the game back - oh and also the alignment?

The White House continue to play schizo over German intentions - so angry they drew 2 for Poland - and now ZZZZ when it comes to the Danes (a 10 thrown).

The 2nd Motorised Corps takes Nanyang - but America remains firmly disinterested (a 6 thrown). Otherwise, apart from a few detail movements, it's all quiet on the Chinese front.

Germany

While the main infantry corps head for Copenhagen, the rest of the German invasion force heads for Fredrikshaven.

The Germans set up to attack Lodz - Warsaw is preferable with the modifiers but the Germans do not have the troops to reach. Panzergruppe Von Leeb retakes Bratislava but can do little else.

Italy

Graziani withdraws to La Spezia, and a more central position given the Yugoslav menace.

Niels Juel escapes - Plymouth is not an option. Any preference on the east coast? Peder Skram and the convoy point were overrun and destroyed.

An attack on Lodz is ordered. The odds are 5:1 no modifiers and I assume the assault table?

The fractional fails, a 2 is thrown, all German are disorganised and there is one loss each.

Air Rebase:
Japan

1. Ki-27 to Nanyang
2. Ki 30 to northwest of Nanyang

I don't think I've ever seen Germany as tief in die Tinte at the end of the first turn.

But, if you can turn the lemons into lemonade, then the greater share of honour.

Good Luck!
