Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #11. German/Italian Naval.

(9) West Med. Round 3.

Neither find.

The Battle of the West Med (rounds 1 & 2) was an RN victory. The Italian RM lost 1 heavy cruiser and had 1 battleship and 1 heavy cruiser damaged. The RN HMS Ark Royal, which could have been sunk, managed to escape but was heavily damaged.

All in all with two rounds of surface action the RN make all their critical damage rolls and beat the Italians who had superior firepower. The Italians stayed away from the heavy escorted 0-box when they had the opportunity instead choosing to close with and try to sink the Ark Royal. Fortunately her escorts were able to beat the Italian off through the Ark Royal sustained heavy damage. Though greatly at a seriously disadvantaged in the 4-box after two rounds the RN stayed and risked it. This risk paid off when neither side was able to find.

After the smoke cleared all that remained of the Italian RM in the West Med was one, disorganized Battleship in the 3-box which will not be able to interfere with any RN movements (i.e., CP's out of Malta and through the West Med).

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Allied #15. Weather.

The turn continues and the weather still remains brutal but lessens in the Med (blizzard to snow), North Monsoon (rain to fine) and south temperate (storm to rain).

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Allied #15. RN. After Action Battle Assessment (AABA).

The metric (Greater TN) developed by the Admiralty to assess naval threat and to set ASW escort and patrol priorities seems right on the money. German u-boats, Italian subs and RM hit the 7 sea area with the highest Greater TN values. Though the axis only achieved victories in 2 of these 7 areas, these two victories inflicted significantly losses on Great Britain. Though the axis also took losses, their losses in comparison was only a fraction economic wise versus Great Britain losses.

One positive is that Great Britain has in position the exact number of CP's needed to replace the 7 CP's forced out of the Central Atlantic and Bay of Biscay. However, this will required Great Britain to take a naval which will force Wavell to halt his push to take a lightly defended Libya.

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Allied #15. RN/French Naval.

Western Med.

Initially the RN, who didn't add any additional naval or air units to the West Med, was going to elect "No Combat" for this sea area. Also, the plan was to return to base at the end of the turn the aircraft carrier Formidable in the 4-box, who's unescorted except by (his implicit) 2 destroyers. After more careful consideration it was estimated that the Italians BB Guilo Ceasre would likely remain at sea and with no RN ships or planes left in the area the British would suffer a -1 MP for in the presence of the enemy. Furthermore, the 3 CP's in the 0-box would be all alone (i.e., no ASW escorts or patrols) except for any planes in position to react. So, the Admiralty decide that an "Initiate Combat" was in order which would allow the British to react a Blenheim Air Group to the 3-box. One issue with all this (re)consideration was that it was done post naval air in which a Sunderland nav air group was put into the 4-box off the Italian Coast. The regret now was that it wasn't put into the 4-box of the West Med, which would have increased the 4-box search number from 4 to 5 and added air to any (potential) naval air combat.

So with the risk that the CV Formidable might be surprise and caught in a surface battle with the Italian battleship the RN Initiates Combat. The result was that the Italians did manage to surprise the RN but lack enough points to force a surface battle against the Formidable. And, though at an advantage, a surface battle with the RN force in the 0-box could easily result in damage to the Guilo Caesar.

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Allied #15. RN/French Naval.

Italian Coast. Round 2.

Only the RN find and make a tactical mistake. The RN planned to have the combat "default" to a sub combat and use their 6 SP's to inflict damage on one of the two Italian CA's escorting the supply CP in the 0-box. However, the RN overlooked the fact that the Italians had air units in the 0-box, which the Italians used to force a naval air combat. With the Sunderland air group at risk the RN used all six SP's to decrease Italy's air-to-air value. In the end, the Sunderland group was cleared, the Italian fighter group was shot down and the Italian supply convoy aborted.

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. End of Turn. US Entry.

The US is able to choose option 22(11) and "Gear up production".

The US has the tension in both pools necessary for option 34(17), "Pass War Appropriations Bill". But, of course, entry levels in both pools are far short of the 34 required. The plan, right now, is not to choose any more options until the US can get the necessary entry levels to choose that option. This will require great discipline on the US part as it may require the US to elect no additional options for several turns.

Turn 10. Mar/Apr 1941. Initiative.

The axis, which have a +2 modifier, win the initiative (8+2=10 to 4) and elect to move first. The decision to move first was based on (1) Germany's desire to pacify Yugoslavia and get those forces to the East in time for a July/August '41 Barbarossa, (2) Germany's desire to get the garrison ratio necessary to break the Nazi-Soviet pact by July/August '41 and (3) Japan's desire to launch a major offensive against both the Nationalist and communist in China.

Weather.

The axis decision to move first this turn is rewarded by good weather for the initial impulse pair. Though, the weather has a potential to turn nasty in the North Temperate and the Med, which means the axis need to make hay there while the sun is shining.
