Obviously, the search party must have been tipped by the protruding pagoda.

She came to rest upside down, apparently. :)

I guessed Paul Allen correctly. Well, who else.

Since it is now upside down it should be possible to determine just how many torpedoes actually hit the ship and where they hit (rather than pilot claims). I recall an article on CombinedFleet.com that seems to leave up in the air whether or not the ship was scuttled or sank from the damage it had incurred. Given its proximity to Henderson Field and the number of planes the US threw at it it wouldn't be terribly surprising if the amount of damage from various weapons overwhelmed the DC capabilities of the ship and its escorts (it should be recalled that Japanese DC Doctrine put the complete burden of damage control on a group of specialized ratings rather than every single sailor as in the USN).

An epic story: http://www.combinedfleet.com/atully03.htm

According this report, the Laffey passed within 20 feet of her. Think of dropping a spread of DCs to explode at a depth of 50 feet . . .
