Played several '39 run throughs and the AI has a minimal defense of Hawaii: 1 SF on each of the clump of islands and Big Island and a few planes. No ships near by or in response to an invasion in '42. Doesn't make any sense to me. Same with Midway and the outer islands which is more understandable.

I was wondering the same thing...Hawaii seem grossly under manned. It is very easy for Japan to take it over, with very limited forces.

I am not sure the of the true forces that were stationed in Hawaii in real life during WW2, but it does seem lacking in the game.

By early '42 there were 100,000 ground and about 16,000 air troops. Also several hundred heavy bombers. If Japan attacked after early '42 they would have been wiped out. This aspect of the game could be enhanced maybe with a few scripts adding units to the Hawaiian Department shorty after Pearl Harbor. Right now it makes no historic sense.

We as players are in charge to defend Hawaii. So just send in some troops.
Btw.: Early 1942 the Japanese could have been wiped out if they would have attacked Hawaii. Or not. Germany could have been wiped out in 1940 attacking France, but they surprised their enemies with a big gamble, protected by luck and slow opponents, using the wrong tactics and decisions.

This can happen everywhere, to everyone. So the USA might have been surprised early 1942 again. Is it likely? No. But thinkable? Oh yes.

I'm playing as Axis - it's the US AI's role to defend Hawaii. There's no way the Japanese could have attacked Hawaii in '42 - after all they tried taking Midway and failed.

War is sort of like sports, fighting (playing) in the opponents home court is quite difficult. Once the territory is captured; remember, it's been sacked & ravaged by battle. It's not like electricity, trains, buses, streets, supplies are sitting in a warehouse down at the corner store. This fits into the whole Japanese situation. Coming into Pearl was no big feat. Sleeping Battleships & Air Fields on a weekend morning. Sneaky Japs. It's like playing the New England Patriots, better have your A-game. Sailing across the Pacific Ocean, long haul. No pit stops for Mountain Dew, Cookies, and Girlie Mags.

I have found it easier as Axis, in the 1942 Race Campaign, to attack and defeat the US AI Pacific Fleet away from Midway and their supporting bombers. The Japanese Maritime Bomber can fly out to the Northwest, locating the US Fleet by being intercepted. The Maritime Bomber, as a sacrifice, flys out again on naval attack, soaking up a net of the two of the US Carrier Fighter intercepts (only one per carrier). The Japanese Escort Carrier can be set to Fighter (it only gets one Naval/Tactical strike) along with one other Japanese Carrier. The remaining Japanese Carriers can be set to Naval/Tactical with two strikes. Some distant Japanese ships will need to be naval cruise moved in. The superior (in quality and numbers) Japanese Navy can now sink the located US Pacific Fleet. The Japanese Midway Special Forces reroute to land in Hawaii and take it. I transport and naval cruise in a surplus Japanese HQ from Northern China to Hawaii for extra supply and support. The US AI has no plan to liberate Hawaii. Once Hawaii is taken, it is safely Japanese for the rest of the game. Once the Japanese Navy has been repaired and resupplied in nearby ports, Midway is then easy to take with Naval/Tactical airstrikes to destroy the bomber (only one left there for me) or bombers.

All of this sounds so historical. I wonder why they did not do this in RL. Oh yea. Supply lines.

And people wonder why I keep harping about the supply system in this game being stupid.

Well this also proves my initial point. This is way to easy and unrealistic. The US AI and/or the naval mechanics need some work to make this part of the game more realistic.

That would be a good change. I also like the zone of control idea for ships. There's something needed to address this.
