Dec 26, 1944

Things quiet down on the 26th. A few more sub strikes, but the rest of the surface fleets move back and the injured head to port. The Iowas all took some damage, with Missouri getting a good pasting from the IJN. It'll need yard time.

Benkolen falls which allows a bit more pressure on Sumatra. Part of my plan here is not to march direct to Palembang, but take Prebemolith and stop, build it up, and make any use of Palembang problematic. It's nearly destroyed as a production facility, but might still have some reserves he would try to pull. He's already removed CAP and everything from the base.

I'll show some maps in the next few posts.

Here is the info screen. A long way to go. Long term I have three priorities:

1. Getting in strat bombing range

2. Securing high VP value base targets (Singers, Chungking, Manila)

3. Trapping large portions of the very forward placed IJA

The next moves will help with 2 and 3 mostly, paving the way to get to 1.

Dec 29-31, 1944

There is virtually no air or sea combat right now. Just some millrun bombing strikes on Borneo and around the lower PI. A few arty bombardments. That's it.

here is a map showing the next stages of keeping up appearances that I'll continue with recent developments. I'll take Perto Princessa with previously prepped troops. I'll add a brigade onto Panay to challenge Japanese bases there. I'll also walk some troops to Kudat and try to wrest that base from Japanese control.

At the same time, other more important plans are developing in the background. Ships are moving and troops are ready. In the next weeks I'll be loading up and moving out ...

You just aggregate stuff - operate in dozens/hundreds of ships instead of single ones, stacks of LCUs, throw excessive stuff around and adjust as needed. Adjusting is done in dozens too

Well, this one is pretty sporadic. I'm getting about 2 turns a week on average. I want to get to 3/week. I just want to get plans into action and remember what I was doing between turns. Keeping the rhythm.

Late war Allies aren't as hard as it seems if you choose well what to ignore. I don't really need 123 more LSTs or 78 LC(G)I in SF. I can just leave them there. I don't have withdrawals to worry about, which is my bane with early and mid-war Allies, and my pilot training is massive but under control because so many units are doing it. I just take a turn every two weeks and empty the readies while adding new ones.

I think a defensive war with the Japanese is just as tough in 45. You're constantly shifting to meet threats, looking at recon and SIGINT, re-allocating CAP and setting up strikes. Then if you actually have a big action, you spend half a day replacing all of your KIA/MIA pilots and re-filling air groups.

You basically have t like details to play this game at all.

The turn of 45 arrives quietly. It'll be a few weeks before the next plans come into play.

He is persistently trying to hit my little ladings in the PI at night, but hasn't been trying in the day at all. No luck with his night strikes.

I'm still pecking up North with the B-29s, trying to avoid NF and flak concentrations.

Subs are still taking a toll. Not sure what happens in the late war, but from both sides I feel like Japanese air ASW is less effective in limiting sub actions.

The last ID at Cagayan is wiped out. A lot of troop VPs in this battle as he didn't pull much out at all.

The Puerto Princessa invasion is gearing up and I've been nullifying nearby airfields just in case.

I've been scouring again with recon to scout future invasion targets. Most of Malaya is pretty thin, more so than a month ago, it seems. I'm already planning a landing at Mersing, but I may extend that to a few other targets aiming to isolate the troops at Singers, further isolate the many troops still on Sumatra, and to add to support for a landing at Victoria Point as a follow on. Singkawang is being built up to support and host some 2Es, sweepers and recon.

I have noticed this too, and always attributed to air search radar on the subs. However, the escorts are deadly.

However, I used the Lorna once, it was quite effective but range is so limited.

The Kate is very good, but short ranged too. It dies quickly in the presence of bleeding CAP.

It probably is the increasing effectiveness of the radar.

I was thinking maybe the exposure of the HI to sub patrols (because Allied bases are closer) might mean dispersal and dilution of the Japanese ASW effort? And perhaps the veteran pilots get dispersed among new air groups too?

In mid 45 I'm still flush with 70exp ASW pilots for both IJN and IJA groups. I have 1200 Helens in the bank, and 350 Kates plus full groups of LR Nells for IJN.

I could saturate areas much more effectively than a few years before, but subs still get through.

Mind-messing has posted a lot about balloons, search the forum for his posts on it, and thank him to because I think his efforts got balloons to work at night.

It is a combination of forts, port and runways I think, the higher the better the density. Most effective against 4E beasts, I don't see them being this effective for the torpedo run...perhaps simply reported on two phases of AA the approach and the final run.

The Allies definitely get them. Works for both sides. Correct on the altitudes as I remember.

Larger bombers such as the 4Es are more likely to hit the balloons than more nimble and smaller 1Es.

Ok. Now that I'm close to caught up in the other AARs I can update on this game. It's getting interesting.

Loka has bumped up the ASW recently. I'm still getting hits near the Chinese coast but now E groups are roving and I lost the Spikefish on the 2nd. I'll have to dig in and broaden patrols and bring some back a bit.

the heavies up North continue pinprick strikes against the HI. Better than nothing until a closer airfield is available.

The first in a long, quick succession of invasions and (hopefully) conquests is about to commence. Allied fleets will converge and aim for Peurto Princessa on the 3rd and drop two supported divisions to tackle the 10k IJA troops in the hex. This will help solidify the LOC to the South China Sea and establish a good search and recon base for next stage ops.

The Allies are also marching on Jesselton on Borneo and Praebemolih on Sumatra, on hex out of Palembang. That will be the extent of Allied ops there once it is taken, giving a decent field to support action toward Malaya. The Japanese are reported to have 80k+ troops at Palembang, so I'll skip that for a while.

Jan 3-5, 1945

All troops make it ashore easily and without too much disablement. There is no response from the IJN or air strikes from Manilla and Clark. After a few days rest the Allied troops begin the battle, and get a 1:1 while lowering forts in the first DA. Losses are very low on both sides, but the attack bodes ell for a quick campaign.

All Allied fleets pull back the day after the landings finish and will go back to Manado to reload and prepare for the next round.

After significant aerial assault Praboemoelih falls easily.

Jan 6-8, 1945

All goes to plan in the PI with Puerto Princessa falling on the 7th. The last vestige of Japanese troops on Mindanao is also being engaged on Mindanao, essentially ending any threat to the Southern PI. All nearby bases are suppressed and cut off from supply, so the troops will wither and we will move past the majority of them.

Some Ki-83 have been sweeping big bases, including Batavia, where I have a massive set of fighters and bombers all resting. I'm daring his bombers to venture ito the flak storm here, but I don't expect that will happen. So I've found the best way to beat the Ki-83 is to not fly CAP unless necessary!

Soon that will all change as I need to CAP new bases in formerly enemy territory. I have some ideas, but will also try to take it to them rather than wait for it to come to me.

Here is a quick preview of coming events. Troops are loading now. CVs are transiting around Borneo. Surface fleets are gathering. The most recent development is that a set of para-units is moving to Sinkawang to hit more extended bases shortly after the main invasions of Southern Malaya are secured. I'll also hit vacant bases on Indochina to sever that rail link to Saigon in anticipation of another landing later. Excited to get it all going!

The good news is the last Japanese officer didn't surrender on until 1974 Hiroo Onoda. So you have hope of holding out a little longer.

You don't need to take Palembang, you just need to keep him from getting oil and fuel from it. If there are that many troops there, then they aren't elsewhere.

For your subs, have you considered putting some minefields in shallow waters that his convoys go through? Even if they just detour into deep water, that should help your subs a little.

Exactly. I've already bombed out most of the oil and he hasn't been moving anything there recently. I never planned to take it, but I know he's built it up as it is great territory to defend. He may even have been sending more troops in, as I don't remember it being this beefed up. Singers on the other hand, has "only" 50k.

Jan 9-13, 1945

On the 9th the Allies take Surigao. These troops are already prepping for next destinations and will move on once this regiment is eliminated.

Loading continues at Batavia unwatched by Japanese recon. He's also restricted naval search to about 5 hexes from Singers. I've got some DDs stationed off of Singkawang that have been unnoticed for over a week. This is good because I'd like to go into Mersing and Malacca without him ever seeing the fleets gather. No combat ships are reported in the area, so that part will be clear at least, but naval strikes could be set to a restricted range, so I'll have to be careful.

The only action these turns is the persistent suppression of IJ bases on NW Borneo and in the PI. I want focus to continue over there, and for him to assume the recent move to Puerto Princessa is to prepare an assault deeper into the PI, not South or West. All is loaded and ready and moves into position on the 13th. A map is posted below. Ready to roll!

Jan 14, 1945

On the 14th the undetected amphibs drop troops at Mersing in good order and the covering bombardments devastate Singers fields with nearly 150 planes destroyed on the ground.

Two of the four scheduled had an impact, while the other two tangled with mines and limped home. I'll lose probably two DD with another 10-12 due yard time in Soerabaja and one cruiser slightly damaged as well. Altogether very acceptable losses. It looks like the Japanese had no idea this was coming as there were no return air strikes and Mersing was vacant.

The Malacca landing goes in tomorrow, and anything already in strat mode could be caught there trying to evacuate if he decides to bail rather than defend. Since there was no bombardment he has no idea the extent of the landing, but I'm sure can see from search rollovers that something major is being dropped here.

Within the next week landings and paras will hit another handful of bases. The next on the list are Kota Bharu, Patani, Victoria Point, and the three Southern bases in Indochina, Soc Trang, Rachgia, and Kompong Trach. Ampibs will then load up for Hue, Tourane and Quinhon, followed quickly by Kwangchowan and Pakhio, with the smaller base opposite Samah on Hainan, Kiungshan, targeted as well. This will give a good foothold on the mainland and threaten to cut off a lot of IJA troops pushed well forward into Burma and on Malaya, as well as entrenched int eh Chinese mountains.

I'll also target some mountain bases like Luangprabang with paras from Burma. That one at least has a field so I can add more after capture, possibly.

The LOC continues to be strengthened as well, with Jesselton being invested and threatened with capture tomorrow, and the feisty garrison at Jolo threatened by a reinforced landing of three armoured units there. I hope to get both within the next week.

It should, although I think there haven't been many shipment in the last 3-4 weeks either. There are probably some stashes at Manila and maybe he'd pushed some along to Indochina, so it may not have stopped flooding North just yet. This does cut off Medan, the last big producing oil center.

Subs are protecting the NE flank mostly, with a few more hunting off of China, and some out near the HI. There isn't much moving lately other than E boats. I want them to tell me when the KB starts closing though, so they are in the area where that might happen.
